I own 3 Toyotas of different body types and a high end Porsche too. There’s no comparison in terms of reliability, maintenance cost and value of a Toyota. You need to ascertain why and what your priorities are in seeking in a car. German cars feel and drive impressively but you better have a good income to afford maintenance and upkeep. But if brand and name is important to you, then you have different priorities and reasons why a Highlander is not for you.

It’s funny because I own a Toyota Highlander and I work for one the German manufacturers you mentioned. I would never compare the two. The Asian brands will almost always hold their value better due to their reliability. The cost of ownership of the German brands is insane. I do love the performance of the Germans but for something that gets me from A to B safely and reliably every day, I can deal without the luxury. Also, you would have to spend at minimum another $20k to get into a theee row German SUV.

Time for a reality check. I own a 2021 Highlander Platinum trim and it is a great car to have. Your complaints are somewhat misguided. 1st - I disagree with your statement about the price. Yes it is a high price car but the car retains the value for WAY longer than ANY luxury car does. Do you homework cause I think you don’t know this. So if I lease this vehicle the price of this vehicle will depreciate very little compare to most luxury vehicles. I agree with the app and the 3rd row being the biggest draw back but most luxury companies don’t even have these features for free either - you have to pay either way. At the current rate of interest rates there are very little cars that are a good idea to lease. 2 years ago there were good options right now I would not buy or lease any car even if its a Toyota that will hardly depreciate and that’s where you will need to correct because Toyotas don’t die but your luxury cars do.

The vehicle has 78,000 miles and other than the lousy OEM tires that had to be replaced at 36,000 miles, no mechanical problems. Brakes are original and show about 50% left. I think you are wrong about the lease payments. Yes, for the similar amount of money for a really good spec Highlander you can get a new GLC or X3 or Q5 - however BMW and Audi are pretty bad in terms of reliability and engine issues. MB is still holding good in this but the lease payments are a lot more than Highlander. I am Mercedes guy, I was only driving MBs for a very long time, after we moved to Canada we got a brand new Toyota Rav4, before that we used to have W177 A Class which was really nice car. Toyota kease payments are not too bad and I think looking at the lease payments from premium brands are pretty high and when you want to own the car you will pay a lot more at the end of the lease than you would just finance it. The more the expensive the car is the more money you will throw at the end to own it. If you want to own the more premium czr from brand new the better option is to finance, lease is only as good as you will switch the cars after few years.

One more comment about my Highlanders vs an Audi. I've owned 19 new cars over my lifetime and several used ones when I was young. None of my cars ever broke down and left me stranded until I purchased a brand new 2009 Audi A4. In the two years I owned it, I had to have it towed twice. Once I had it towed to a local garage from 80 miles away when it broke down. I'd never have another Audi.

The Audi, BMW or Mercedes isn’t half the car that Toyota is. Their well financed owners actually brag about their cars being well cared for at the Dealership. Also, check out the depreciation rate for those 4 brands.

I agree on 2 of his points and those are the rear seat and the Toyota AP. I bought a 2020 Highlander. We paid cash out the door Taxes, Title & Tag $42,500. We have 43,000 on it without the 1st issue other than the tires were replaced @ 40,000 miles. The ride is good and it is a pleasure to drive. I would be nervous with an Audi, BMW or Mercedes unless it came with a bumper to bumper warranty that included service as long as I owned one. The service is where they make the money on you even with a Toyota and as well as all other cars. I would take my chances with a Toyota.

I went temporarily insane and bought a brand new 2018 Subaru Forester with turbo. Nothing but problems, all of which the service department denied ever seeing before although we had been in to have the horrendously squeaky sun visor units replaced six times alone. Then the turbo started acting up. The seats were like sitting on a cement park bench. Traded that headache in for a used 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited and never even glanced in the rear view mirror as I burned rubber leaving the dealership. The Subaru had only 18,000 miles on it. Got the Highlander at 45,000 miles. Have had my Highlander three years and LOVE IT. NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. Seats like clouds, lots more room, features and Toyota reliability.

Toyota/Lexus: Finance for long term. I've purchased this same exact model and love it and also still drive my Lexus IS 300 which I've bought back in 2002 from the show room with 8 miles on it. Currently at 250,000 miles and with in a 20 year ownership I've spent about 15k on all maintenance, which includes oil, tires, Catalytic converter which was the only real repair that was needed to pass emissions and that went bad at around 165,000 miles. German Cars: Lease (if you want to drive one.) Unless you have money to burn never EVER buy a German car for long term. Their reliability and up keep is just insane.
