First of all, good to see you back Blake. Secondly, I'm really glad you made this video just to reiterate and reinforce how important this message is. In the past, my ego was huge and I made my notes very specific on players like 1 or 2 words e.g. Idiot, Stupid Donk etc and through coaching and experience, I have since made my notes very expansive. It's not about knowing someone sucks, it's about understanding *WHY* they suck. So now I will type a couple of lines on how they played certain hands or limp/folding 5bb for instance. Take care bro, keep up the good work.

Makes sense. 1st point taken: label more narrower explanations than just saying fish, to provide better exploitation. 2nd point: a fish in poker is a fish in poker, but for all we know hes prolly shark in life than any grinder. love ur vids. keep it comin.

+SchoolofCards This has been covered... Loose Aggressive, Loose Passive, Tight Passive, Tight Aggressive, Phil Helmuth wrote a book where he calls them different animals, mouse, elephant, jackal, lion.... there are multiple books on it, the psychology of poker for example :P

This is almost necessarily the case. If you are a big loser in poker, you are going to need a lot of disposable income! The only kind of people who are losers in both life and poker are pissant kids with tons of inherited wealth.

Brilliant. I actually think a lot about what you talk about already but to hear it from you broken down like that is inspiring! The deeper you think about poker, the more layers of thought you uncover.

Your videos are really helpful although I feel I'm a competitive player it's easy for mistakes to creep in. These videos definitely help me keep a balanced perspective on my game. Keep it up mate 👍

Good to see you back making videos again. Another point to add is if you call an actual fish a fish they might so offended that they choose to not play around you anymore. If you notice someone is a fish then it's in your best interest to be as positive as you can toward them

Love that your back mate, Keep up the good work. (and to comment on this vid: i figured this out just a few days ago after loosing a ton to some1 i had labled fish for just a few bad plays. Sat down and tought about how i could have lost to him reweived hands and at last i figured out that the reason i lost was cause i had put him on a skill level of 2/10 lets say (10:phil ivey) (1:first level of abc poker) , letting myself slack and play on my Z game instead of A game, prittey much just klicking buttons.) Wish i had this thing figured out sooner, cause i think this could have been one of my more major leaks in my game..... Great vid overall so people learn what i learnt the hard way, GLAD YOUR BACK!

One thing I've noticed, specifically with older "fish," is that a lot of these guys are fishy *with each other,* but after a few hours playing with you, they will realize you're not there to gamble and that you're paying attention. They will start to play back at you and tighten up. They might start to think about balance. Just because someone is a gambler doesn't mean he doesn't know how to play poker if you piss him off or alarm him in some way. Granted, this kind of players is never *that* good, but if you think they're just going to hand you their stack, that's very rarely the case. You might only have a few orbits to get this kind of action.

Constructive Criticism: From a video standpoint I think it would be useful if you included some text (perhaps along the bottom of the screen) with basic explanations of what you're currently talking about e.g. "1) Broad/General labels are not helpful.". It's easier for people to take in information when they can remind themselves what the overarching point is at a glance. Hope you know what I mean. Cheers for the video!

Just another thing I would mention is that most of us were "fish" at some point (unless you were born knowing good poker theory) and what differentiates us from the players who never get better is that we have put time and effort into learning how to be better. Some players don't want to do this, or they try but never accomplish it. Either way, there's no reason to insult them and chase them away, especially because they are going to be where you derive most of your profit.

I would mention "UL" (You Lose) and "BYE" when playing tournaments. There are some online players that regularly use these little taunts when a player is eliminated, and sure, it is fine to have some communication elements to your game, however, the player they are taunting is no longer in the game and what they actually have done is provided the other players with some free information. When I see a "UL" or a "BYE" it prompts me think about that player. "UL" and "BYE" are clues, and they always seem arrogant and or disrespectful. Maybe that player is arrogant and he might call when I have the nuts.

These are really good points, I find myself more actively hunting out "fish" @ the table and playing more marginal hands against them and wondering to myself how I always get "sucked out" against them. Identifying weak players @ a table should be part of any good poker players game but exploiting them CORRECTLY is even bigger.
@mbr05c

Another point you didn't make. Calling someone a fish can chase them away from your game. Worse players are bread and butter. Why would you chance making them leave?

The only time I tell someone they're making a mistake at the table is when they criticize a bad player. Why chase away the person that is most likely to pay you to play with them? Because they got lucky, rivered you and you have to make sure everyone knows you are the better player. Dumb. I thing I've noticed is that if someone is getting ripped for their play, they are almost certainly dragging the pot or stacking their newly acquired chips. Tell them good play, smile, and get your money back as they continue to make bad plays. I once was playing in a limit game, got KK, made third raise preflop. Flop was dry and under a king, so I bet, 3 calls. Turn comes a 7, I bet again, one call. River is a 2, bet, called, lost to 7 2 off suit. After doing a shocked review of the board, I merely said nice hand and made a mental note to always play at her table. If you would yell at her and tell her how stupid she was, think about what that would accomplish. Make her feel bad, maybe chase her away or stop being so loose and a calling station. But you told her!

I disagree ..talking mad shit to my opponetts makes them make terrible calls against me when i overbet my made hands..im not saying to be obnoxious like Tony G or Hellmouth but subtle comments here and there can defenitly tilt some guys and coerce them to make emotional decisions opposed to logical/probable ones. Just my two cents. Gave a like for the vid bro keep it up ;)

I think your'e right on the point of being proud of winning against a worse player. If you have won against a worse player then it is expected, its normal, it is how things work, nothing to be overly proud of. The way I see it whenever someone talks too much about how his opponents are fish, donks etc. he is basically saying that either he believes that they are on the same level but he beat them, or he doesn't believe he is as good of a player as he says he is, or he has some other life issues that he tries to compensate with this kind of talk to feel better about himself. Basically the same thing as if a grown up talked shit to a 10 year old. Unless of course the player tries to make his opponents mad in order to make them do more mistakes, but that situation is not what we are talking about.

One fish, two fish, but 2 different types of fishes in the bowl is the grammatically correct way to differentiate.

FISH!! Ah that term makes me laugh. I really like this video....especially the point about them being sharks at life. I personally like seeing classy poker players (phil helmuth annoys me btw...some of his rants are so disrespectful). Players who are gentleman...play the game with a smile...and shake the opponents hand win/lose. If someone is a Fish as you would see it then great....use your poker skills on them....but it may still not be easy taking their money if you try and play them in the wrong way or overadjust. I get my pleasure out of poker by using my HUD (yes I am an onliner lol) and any hand to hand tells to categorise and exploit any player...could be a fish playing too many hands or could be a TAG who just can't help but Cbet every flop (float him on the flop and just donk the turn). You noticed I use the term donked ha....but I donked with a plan ;) Anywayss essentially you should win and lose with class :)

cardiffuniguy if u notice phil is never called upon he always is the greeter or the convo starter which means he knows no one is really looking forward to talking to him on a best bro level, which is why I believe he is very noob when he bashes players cause in real life people are using him rather than genuinely wanting to spend time with him on a personal level

I get excited when I take money from a fish because it reminds me of the hard work I have put in so as not to be that person. It also shocks me that these same fish will play for hours and hours, lose chunks of money and never once think to pick up a book or learn anything. Tonight I played with someone who went all in every hand. I categorised him more specifically as "probably unable to tie own shoelaces".

@kakasenseful
@kakasenseful 9 лет назад
yes but lets say you played against Tom dwan, wouldn't it be more awarding to your self esteem and confidence in your game if you played him off hes chips than any other bad player out there? now i know you dont really match up with durr on a regular basis unless your a super high stakes player, but if you play against a player you see as good and win, compared to a bad player and win the mental award you get out of it is a bit diffrent. And instead of calling all the players you beat for fish or donks you could say he played good but i played better and get a bigger self esteem boost than if you would trashtalk him just cause he went out as a loosing player.

Poker is a game. Games are supposed to be fun. Having fun in life is more important than the money that controls their lives. Yeah, poker is based around money (or chips at least), but money is just a tool we can use to achieve our goals and live happy life-styles. Money is nothing and it is everything.
