Why You Should NOT BOOST Your G35 or 350Z... 

Aaron as you may remember i have been a sub of your channel for a long time. Even before your wreck i was concerned (being a dad) that you would do something stupid on the road while racing/drifting and hurt yourself. After the wreck it greatly concerned me that you were doubling down & building a racing beast. What struck me however was the fact that you were most likely never mentored by a mechanic so you only had cursory knowledge of auto mechanics YET you attempted to literally build (and boost) an engine basically by yourself. And for all intent and purposes - you DID IT. You taught yourself how to rebuild an engine. Not too many people can say that. I have always believed you were a highly intelligent and personable young man. This video proves not only that but also that you are maturing & are unselfishly trying to help other young men who love to race cars. My respect for you continues to grow. My concern for your welfare and safety is now waning a bit. It looks and sounds as though you have passed through the devil may care stage of your life & are entering a more disciplined approach. i have a vortech supercharged 350z and havnt had a single problem with it, runs and drives beautifully, completely stock internals and it’s running around 408 hp

im in tampa fl as well. came upon a fully built engine on the market place. been going through out your videos tonight and i was more than excited to be fully committed to going single turbo but then seeing this vid. came to a realization i am not in the correct place in my life being 20 to do this. cant thank you enough for this video and you being real with the viewers thank you again boss man

Tuning is the most important aspect of boosting your vq. To anyone boosting anything make sure your tuner is an expert in the platform or it's gonna be a bad time. Of course the quality of the parts matter but if your tune is in adequate it will not matter. At all. It's proven time and time again by experienced tuners that healthy stock DEs can and will hold about 400 wheel torque and HR's around 500, and actually last a substantial amount of time. With a proper tune and maintenance.

As for the lean issue, this is why you get off the UpRev software and go to a standalone ECU like Haltech; where you can run Speed Density based calculations for sensing load. In addition, you can cal/tune your ECU to run closed loop fueling which if you have a vacuum leak, are using a MAP sensor and close loop fueling, you’ll be able to stay on targeted AFRs with fuel corrections being applied. However, you may never even know you are running lean….unless you see in the data, how much fuel corrections are being applied.

g35’s are fun to boost but they cost soo much to build. thank you for actually valid reasons instead of garbage like “the door motors stopped working” or “the interior quality is outdated”

I moved on from a boosted z to the N54 platform and made more hp for less initial cost unfortunately the time and money to keep it running is not easy on the wallet great content and info for anyone looking to boost.

Inadequate oil return flow will smoke like crazy and scavenge pump can help pick up the slack alot of times. In the car performance triangle you can only be 2 of the 3 things fast, reliable or cheap. Alot of times oil flow also helps cool the turbo. Plug changes om normal cars all depend on plug type for mileage but with more air and fuel a regular copper plug 1 step colder that you should be running in you will def need to be change more frequently especially if not running it hard alot the plugs can foul quicker.

Aaron, you have become a Wise man. Just think you could have enough money for a down payment to buy a house. I too went down to the same road with a Honda Prelude years ago. I spent thousands of dollars in a supercharger, gages, computer, rims, tires, Suspension upgrades, and professional dyno tuning. Twice ,I returned home on a flatbed truck due to breakdowns. Yes, it did bring me pleasure when it ran. When I sold it, the upgrades did not carry any value at all. Luckily I did grow out of my Boy Racer syndrome and now just enjoy my nearly stock reliable G35.

As far as swap I’d put an HR in mine but the goal would be to twin turbo it but the point of the vr30 makes sense too

Great video! I definitely am in the same boat with my Z, even considered selling it because of how much I've invested in it and how I could repurpose those funds. At the end of the day, it's an investment and you gotta always do what's best for the future.

These are good points to make. When deciding to go boost, it's best to weigh options and plan ahead. I have an 05 G35 Sedan 6spd with the DE Rev up, and mine has over 230k.. Only has basic bolt ons(Intake, test pipes back exhaust, Z1 lightweight crank pulley, BC coilovers) and I'm concentrating on preventative mods at the moment. A GREAT and cheap upgrade for our motors, is running the R35 oil filters! Screws right on and are larger so you get better filtration to help protect that DE. Actually, according to Z1, these filters fit a bunch of Nissan/Infiniti rides.

Boosting my nismo HR was the worst decision I ever made it built my own kit money wise only had 2k in it but 1 week after it was done and tuned it threw a rod and the 3 years after that It didnt run a total of 1. 10/10 absolutely do not reccomend boosting a vq.

My boost 350z was totaled never had any mechanical issue but now im looking for another one to swap my boosted DE engine 😅

That's not a completely true statement @ Aaron. It's all dependent on how the engine was built. A built VQ can be very reliable at 600hp. Boost level is also important.

Yeah, boosting a car that wasn't designed for boost is not for the faint of heart or wallet. Starting with a better (already boosted) platform may be a better choice. The engine is already built to handle the boost. I don't think you mentioned how long this took. I haven't seen the other videos from the start of the project. The time it takes to get everything done is ridiculous. I mean when dealing with the specialty and tuner shops. They are always overbooked and backed-up with many different projects. Definitely plan on being without the car for possibly many months. One of the owners of a shop I visited recently told me some projects were over a year old and still going. Have to factor the time in too.

I am dying to know what was causing the heads lift? google says Cylinder head lift is caused by excessive cylinder pressure, which can result from several things, including detonation and/or pre-ignition; improper fuel type; over-advanced ignition timing; improper air-fuel ratio; vacuum leaks; malfunctioning sensors; and increased boost pressure. Did this have anything to do with accidentally boosting the crankcase?

LS swap is going to still run about 10 to 15K even doing it yourself.Not really a cheaper option, but more reliable than boosted DE.

i always like.the look of the G35 BUT I would never spend.that much money on a car. I wanted to go fast cheaply so I took the 2 wheel route. I have an 02 VQ35DE maxima with a 6 speed and the most I'll do with that is a 7th or 8th gen maxima engine. right now it has a bunch of bolt ons and a tune.

Yes there are smarter swaps like vr30 swaps which would be around 12k or ls swap which would be around 8-10k but what you have is different I feel like they’re isn’t many twin turbo’d de’s single turbo tons of en so it’s really up to want you want out of the car and how much you’re willing to spend including the mistakes cost which no one really talks about

Once you start you cant stop until you get what your looking for. No matter the cost when your looking for a fast car. But it's cheaper to just convert to a LS motor out of the box you get 350 400hp then add mods all priced at 13k The price of of a American made v8 LS is a easy switch and cost effective. Sure you can do a Nissan Titan v8 I dont see why not. You can also v10 or any motor for that matter. If you want to mod the shit out of your car. Meaning if your planning to do a turbo the cost as he explained can run you around $22,000 dollars most cases closer to 25k for top of the line motor built the turbo install and all of the wiring and a good dino tune. Then you need to start doing bushings in the rear and motor mounts trans mounts to stiffen it up. LS motor bolts right up with LS swap kit and you get a brand new motor and after bolt on mods theres no reason you cant get 400 450whp. Then you can do a supercharge I think works best for v8 for around 5k total cost 15k. Trust me I'm a huge fan of Nissan. But the VQ35DE is a bitch to mod at least a 2006 is. Just adding headers screws up o2 and AF sensors to the ECM. And the bottom ends are not that tough at all. Rod bearings and main bearings with VQ will cook. How do I know well because I did it in my 2006 revup 350z that I was and still am building for 2 years now. At cost of 14k but now I need a new motor to build with new crank

I just rebuilt my 06 RevUp VQ35DE engine and….it’s leaking oil from the rear main seal after driving ~250miles to break-in the engine. Now I have to pull the entire engine and trans just to replace this seal (oil pan has to come off). I’m so pissed…

So, how many quarts of oil did you end up needing to reduce the pressure?

I have a 04 g35 vq35de im going N/A Full bult on with plenum spacer, CAI, and full exhaust headers to blast pipes and i got quoted by a local shop with a dyno for 5 maps on stock ecu. Do you have any better recommendations for tuning? I just dont want to blow my motor.

my goal with mine is to be at 350whp, think i can get that from intake mods and exhaust, pretty much bigger throttle body, intake plenum and space 75mm on everything , short ram intake 3inch that fits where the stock air box would, (id do my best to protect the temps and the filter) and a complete motordyne exhaust3 inch. think thats possible Aaron?

I really want to supercharge my Z though I’m worried about the cost and reliability for the numbers I want to hit, but can’t bring my self to put a ls in it because i want it to stay jdm and reliable and have readily available parts.

You can boost with a turbo on it use a good Supercharger it works with me

When u say lower the oil level to stop the oil blowing thru turbo are u talking engine oil where do u keep the level at on your dipstick?!? Having an issue with my big turboed car blowing oil only at 6 rpm & higher smokes like a bitch than starts back firing

Build your motor. Then assemble the forced induction. If you do this over a period of time say a few years or more, the hit on your pocket is much less. Yes 17k is a lot to build the motor but imagine spending like 5k a year on it. Won’t break the bank. You won’t miss that 17k in a few years. Dumping 17k into it thinking RU-vidrs do the same isn’t a good idea. Some of them yes build a full car in a month. You ever eat an elephant? One bite at a time boyz. (Old timer told me that saying)
