I had a 2005 BMW 335CI and I bought it used in 2006 and kept it until early 2016. Never any problems. It was a daily driver, but had only maybe 50K miles on it by 2016. I only did regular service maintenance on it. Car looked almost brand new still in 2016. It had the 6cyl inline engine and auto transmission. I kind of regret now trading it in. I did not trade it in for another BMW, they were just too expensive by 2016. I thought it was the best looking of any of the 3 series 2 door coups they ever made. Great video. Enjoy them very much. CHEERS.
I bought a 2012 328i for 3k, spent about 6k in repairs paint job, tires, seals, gaskets, headlights and so on, ever since then the car runs perfect. I been enjoying this thing for 4 years just replacing oil, filters and spark plugs. It comes out to about $3200 not including insurance a year in 4.5 years of ownership including the purchase price. On the other hand my new car costs me on average $11,000 a year including maintenance and car payments! So do the math and see what works for you. I personally prefer to buy two used cars, maintain them and if one breaks, I drive the other one and fix it myself as needed.
Same thing I'm doing. Just bought a 2011 BMW 528i yesterday and I have a 2008 Acura mdx that ill drive in case the BMW breaks down. Although it has a good Carfax and a 2-year wrap around warranty, I'm still going to prepare for the worst. It has 92k miles.

I bought a 4 year old 328xi(2010) the guy gave all the paperwork he had taken the car to the dealership for repairs (lots of money) as of right now I have spent $750 only in repairs plus maintenance that I do myself. AMAZING CAR .
I rotate my daily driving between my 2002 BMW 325ci and my 2008 BMW 335i. I have spent alot of money on both of them but still love them both. The e46 has 126k on it and the e90 135k. When I bought my 335i I purchased it for 8200.00 at the time and then ended up spending the same amount to get her in good shape! To date now I have about 20,000.00 total invested in her but she runs great and is super fast with that n54. My best 0-60 is 3.425 seconds with the mods I've done.
My 2004 E53 is a blast to drive bro. I love it so much. She got 102k miles and it’s amazing. I love old school BMW’s and plan on buying a 325ci next. Any issues or concerns I need to know about them?
@@trustyoungpierre9959 I had a coupe. Not a convertible just for reference. The coolant expansion tanks are known to crack and need replacement. Also sometimes the radiator also but you can get an aftermarket one for less than 100.00. Pulley set. Coil springs and shocks/stuts after 100k miles. That's about it for the most common things that need replacement after 100k if not done already. There is one other thing to check and that's to look for any cracks in the rear subframe. Look it up and you'll see what I mean. Usually it's only happening on cars that have been driven hard alot like some M3s but can happen on any of them when pushed too hard for too long. Oh and expect the pillars inside from front to back to have the cloth material falling off. They are notorious for that. I did have to do spark plugs and a valve cover gasket also. Look for oil leaks. Oil pan also as it's not a cheap or quick job to replace as the front subframe must be dropped if I recall correctly. The M54 engines are reliable when treated properly but are known to use some oil too. May have to top it off occasionally. The M52 and M52TU didn't need as much topping off if any. Hopefully I havent scared you away from them too badly. I love a good e46. Any more questions feel free to ask.

@@trustyoungpierre9959 that I couldn't tell you. I have no experience with the convertibles. My coupe didn't even have a sunroof which was a rare thing. Parts for the e46s are cheap they days really for the most part. I usually use FCP Euro for parts. Everything they sell comes with a lifetime warranty. A couple other places for parts are ECS tuning and Pelican Parts. I'd like to have a convertible myself someday. I almost ended up with a Z3 with low miles recently but someone beat me to it. I just got my second BMW 3 series. My first car my parents got me in high school was a BMW 3 series. Now I’m in my 20’s & decided to get rid of my mustang & recently got a newer 3 series with low miles, only one owner previous who bought it as a certified BMW that was only serviced at the dealer. Thankfully it’s still under factory warranty & I got extended warranty & gap. BMW’s can last you if you properly take care of them & stay up on the maintenance. My husband is helping me add some after market items to it now such as carbon fiber details & etc. I love love my BMW. Definitely a BMW lover.
Speaking nothing but facts! I got a 2004 E53 (102k miles) and she’s SOLID as a rock! No issues at all (window regulator went out at 101k miles but that wasn’t an issue). I’m starting to change the parts now to make sure she’s good for many years to come. Preventive maintenance I like doing. They’re excellent cars, they just require more attentive care. Personally I always recommend others to go for the older models of BMW. Less technology crap in them and not so much plastic parts compared to the newer models these days.
All true. I do all repairs on my 1988 325is and 2000 528it myself. Not always easy but at least these cars don't require a computer science degree to deal with bmw's lousy software.
I have 2011 e92 lci / 330i msport. Silver , red Dakota seats, big screen navi, sunroof, 19" 313. I Love it. I have downloaded full spare parts oem numbers and this makes it easy for me to get cheaper and best parts everytime.
Owning a '03 540i MSport and only real issue has been the driver side window not going up because the mechanism gets off track or the wire gets twisted. Other than that, the car is a helluva lot of fun and pass bitches left and right on the interstate. Carves mountain roads like it's nothing. Would recommend to anyone. The newer cars though...follow this man's advice. BMW needs to get back in touch with their roots.
I’ve had a 2008 328xi for 7 years...I’m the 3rd owner...so far I’ve replaced the valve gasket..coolant hose & repaired a coolant leak..radiator..drive shaft...3 ignition coils...and 2 oil leaks...easily $12,000 spent in 7 years..run flat tires $600..brakes & pads $1,000..DO NOT BUY A BMW IF YOU CANT AFFORD THE MAINTENANCE!.. outside of that it’s an amazing car & I’m going to keep it because I’ve just about replaced almost everything lol
If you tackle all the weak points on the car and do preventative maintenance like you're supposed to it's actually not that bad.. first and foremost you have no business buying a BMW if you can't afford the maintenance in the first place.. and I can agree with you I had a 2007 BMW 335i e90 Atlantic blue and I dealt with all the problems you deal with and more

Wouldn't a good plan for a used BMW is to get one after someone just leased it for 2 or 3 years, check the history and make sure the maintenance was done before purchasing?
why is the quality so bad in such an expensive car? You would think if you spent $100k + on a car you should be able to drive it for 100k miles with no issues like a toyota! this makes no sense. i want my next car to be a BMW so bad but am always scared away by these horror stories smh!

Rightfully so. You should be. In all reality, what does $100k actually buy at the BMW dealer? Cost to value ratios are equivalent to going to Las Vegas!
I heard mechanics say BMWs are only engineered to be reliable for 5 years. BMW makes their money on the primary buyer, service and parts. They aren't made for people who can't afford to buy one brand new or fix them themselves.
If you buy a brand new BMW and maintain it from the beginning. It will last you forever. Yes the water pump will leak and so will some other stuff but if you maintain it it will last you forever. BMW's are very well built. In Germany they are very well maintained and can be bought used. Also everyone knows how to work on them and parts are cheap. Not so in the United States. But if you want more than a Japanese appliance or an American SUV then you have to go with the Germans. You cannot have reliability and also have power and handling and advanced technology at the same time. It just doesn't work like that.

A contrast to BMW is Porsche. They always have value to someone. Heck the rebuilt air cooled and restored Porsche are least six figures ( Singer Porsche is close to a million bucks). They are timeless.
Anyone buying a used BMW, or any luxury car for that matter, and think it will be a daily driver is stupid. 10 years ago my friend bought a 2001 7-series. The water pump went out and he was on the hook for $700. For a water pump. You must buy a used luxury car, you can't go wrong with a Lexus. Sure it isn't as exciting as it's German rivals, but you get peace of mind knowing you aren't sitting on a financial time bomb.
The cracks are from the heat of the engine, not the cold. BTW: Had three BMW's and they all leaked and overheated. As much as I love the car and the way they look and handle, never again!!!
In my own experience I give up a Bmw for a Jeep and that was a disaster everything went bad from sensor to radiator and overheated engine and the worse part that I took that Jeep to the dealer and they can’t repair it they said that I need to change the engine $$$ went back to Bmw super happy with it few fixes here and there but over all Bmw is a solid car better million time then local made cars if u gonna compair luxury performance and prices get a Bmw the the cost is the same $.❤

I own 2013 528i. I bought it as CPO in 2015. So far the car is ok. I agree with the cost of maintaining it. Part of it due to the high cost of labor. BMW needs to rethink how to contain or even reduce the labor cost.

I think the whole way of thinking has to change, Basically once about every 10 years or 100K miles, all modern BMWs require a major overhaul like an aircraft. All the gaskets, seals, water pump, and many other parts should be replaced/upgraded all in one go. BMW will never tell you to do that as they want the car junked. Unfortunately unlike aircraft used prices do not properly reflect what work has been done. Attempting to only fix the problem at hand at the time is not the way to go as everything is engineered to fail at about the same time.
I like the idea of an airplane mindset. I treat my BMWs like you suggest. I also see owners not fixing “minor” engine oil leaks in an N54 with disastrous outcome. Don’t own any German car unless you have the money to fix it when problems occur.
Wow. At least the Italian cars have flare! A German car should not require so much attention to keep rolling. BMW cars use to have engineering geniuses designing them! Then the profit bug infested them. That became their new ideology. I miss those days.
Well, there goes my thought of buying a BMW for the first time! It's not like I haven't heard it before, but it's nice to be reminded just as I'm researching cars! The car reviews all describe looks, comfort, and driving pleasure. Never anything about reliability and cost to repair!

The 70 K drop in value gives me the money to fix my older BMW. When I buy new, I lose 70k with the same car I paid 100k for a car now worth 30k. And no money to fix it.
To me it's largely about the specific car you put eyes on buying. From my experience a luxury car that looks good / has been taken care of i.e. has been to the dealer for regular service & especially warranty repairs, is often GTG for a long time in the out-years. Service history is key. Yeah it's a gamble, but more often than not I've come out ahead on that gamble vs the following: What is more of a certainly vs a gamble is buying one of these cars new. You WILL pay a king's ransom on taxes/registration & you WILL lose your @ss on depreciation. Plus you likely will be spending a fair amount of time & money at the dealer for routine service & warranty work. The other plus to buying one of these type cars used is if you don't end up liking it you can often get out from under it for very close to what you paid for it. This is even more true in cases where you purchased your ride tax-free via a private party buy. I love it when people buy or lease new though as if not for new buyers & leases I wouldn't be able to get fine automobiles for a fraction of the cost.
Mark, I’m a car enthusiast like yourself.... I have a 2007 M6 also and love my convertible, I only have 45,000 miles. And stored in garage like your 06 m5 and lambo!! I also have 06 Gto and 2010 ZO6. Your knowledge is on point, especially with E60 m5. I have a question what oil do you use in your m5? I personally agree that the 10-60 oil is to thick for that motor since the tolerance is so tight on that v10 f1.

@@MrRepsMrReps Yeah what most people don't seem to understand is the fact that when someone visits Scotty instead of the dealership it already suggests that he or she purchased a shoddy car in the first place and this can apply to any brand, even his endorsed Toyota brand of which I have seen a handful of videos of his also saying that Toyota's are a collection of cheap ass plastic. What's also worth mentioning is the fact that here in Europe you will rarely if ever see a German car next to the road which is not at least 10 or even 15 years old but you will always see cars from Asian manufacturers such as Kia, Toyota, Daihatsu, Nissan and Hyundai and I've seen quite a few which were definitely from the last 2 or 3 generations so I am not so sure where this perception of Toyota being a topnotch brand comes from.
RustygamerX Any business that focuses on strictly profit and not the satisfaction of their customers don’t deserve their patronage! They started fading around ‘98... you could see it coming. Drove them for years, stopped in ‘98. @@kavindumalshan9379 Depends on the car, I purchased a 2020 BMW 340i xDrive with ~21000km on the odometer with BMW Premium Selection warranty and I could have purchased a similar car with less options and less driven kilometers but I find it suspicious when a car is ~1,5 years old and has only driven 6000km which would indicate that those kilometers are mostly from city traffic whereas the one I bought logically has more highway kilometers.
10 minutes into this video, I remembered a quote from a police officer saying stolen BMW's are worth 10 times more in parts. Boy, does that ring true! Thanks for a great vid.
That's my point too. You are already paying extra for a car, for their brand. But why are these premium brands more expensive in the first place? Because they supposedly offered better quality. Reliability is part of "better quality". I will not buy any of these so called premium brands BMW, Audi, Merc. These brands ares now outright thieves and criminals. Why should they give me cheaper parts in my car if I have already paid twice as much for the car when it's new?!

STAY ON THE NATURALLY ASPIRATED INLINE 6 (PREFERABLY M54 OR N52 ENGINES) ONCE YOU GET IT, CHECK ALL PIPES, COOLANT, TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE FLUIDS,..... REPLACE THE NECESSARY AND YOU ARE GOOD. Bad mechanics or mechanics that aren’t knowledgeable about BMWs will cause you to spend more. BMWs can last 300,000 miles. My car has overheated before and it is still rolling 6 years later. BMWs are great cars but you will pay more on repairs and labor compared to most brands. Buy your own parts!!! Don’t let some of these mechanics put cheap parts on your BMW!!
💯 true. In the summer of 2018 i bought a used 2013 X5 with 94k miles.. my first ever SUV and it “looked” amazing and drove like a champ. The interior fit and finish was great. Unfortunately i didn’t have a pre-purchase inspection done. Within 8 LONG months i sunk nearly $2,500 into it for repairs (and that was with a extended bumper to bumper warranty). Leaking rear differential, frozen door lock (broke lock actuator) and front end suspension replacement. I was spiraling down a bad path... One day i was watching Scotty Kilmer about how BMW’s are empty $ pits especially over 50k miles and about 5 years old and BOOM, i sent him a message and he said “buy the LEXUS, you already know what a piece of crap the BMW is”. I can't really agree with this. Doing your research and finding a used one that's had the repairs done and common problems fixed isn't a bad thing. With a new one you are still losing a lot of money with depreciation and you have to pay for full insurance if you haven't paid it off yet. I think a proper used one is a much better choice, if a person buys a bad one due to no research then it's somewhat their fault too.
yes this ! i just told someone this in the comments, do your research and ask the dealership questions that refer to what the car main problems are and when did they get the repaired ect.
Not exactly true, if the car has been fully maintained complete service history & service inspection, I have never had a problem using these guidelines. But as they say buyer beware.
Where can one find a "properly maintenanced" BMW?. Coming off a lease, maybe? Their 100k mile time bomb setting can not be defused. "Proper maintenance" still does not negate their built in issues. Can't get around plastic's shelf-life in the hostile environment of an engine bay either! $$$$
It is absolutely true. This video is right on the money. The BMW 535i Twin Turbo I had was nothing but headache for me. Water pump, transmission gasket and fuel sensor all went dead on me with less than 35K miles on the car. I bought my car new and maintained it regularly. But, none of those items are covered by regular maintenance. That BMW was the last European car I had and I stayed away from BMW and all European cars ever since.

To be fair to my local BMW dealership they take the aged cars and sift the problems direct to auction, and refurbish those that can be reliably run by a customer who might come back and buy again and again.
