Bottom line: Get individual long term disability coverage from an insurance company, not your employer provided policy. Make sure it has own occupation and cost of living adjustments.

Save your money. These disability insurances are in the business of denying your claim and not paying you after you've been paying for years upon years in the event of an unforeseen life changing condition happens wearing you need them. If you are considering signing up consult a reputable Disability Law Firm to review the policy before you sign up so you know exactly what your benefits are. Overall all the funds that you would have invested monthly into any disability insurance company it would be more BENEFICIAL for you to invest YOUR MONEY in something else and you won't have the headache of fighting the insurance companies to get minimum monthly pay compared to what you were receiving as a physician.

I'm still not convinced this is not a complete waste of a money for a 33 y/o healthy Physician like myself, but i signed up for it anyway, begrudgingly.

Did you get an individual coverage policy or one through your employer? You want to get an individual policy and make sure it covers cost of living adjustments and own occupation. This is something employers are not required to warn employees about when they start or provide them with group coverage, which is often not adequate for long term disability. The state and federal laws should require ample warning about this when joining an employer so appropriate coverage can be obtained. Social security only pays 30%. You need that individual policy to cover the other 30%, otherwise you won't be able to afford the bare necessities of life given how expensive housing and medical insurance is.

I think it is appropriate to have but be advised it rarely pays more than 70% and many cases have to be adjudicated. Attorneys fees range from 40% of the overall disability or 50% of the fees recovered from the time of disability to settlement. And due to the Trump administration's change of policy, personal attorney fees are not deductible and you will have to pay income tax on the the entire amount including those paid to the attorney.

Unfortunately, I discovered disability insurance claims take years, are only awarded 30-40% of the time and attorneys retain 40-50% of your settlement. In addition, due to changes to the tax code by the Trump administration, legal fees paid for by individual are no longer tax deductible. I thought 70% coverage would be sufficient, instead my income was reduced by almost 70%.

May I ask what company you dealt with and what kind of BS reasons they gave?

@@ThePeterDislikeShow I'd rather not mention my former employer, but there is a likelihood you are viewing this on one of their devices. The problem occurred when Sedgwick, the worker's comp admin lost the majority of my medical records which were forwarded to the disability insurance company. This also prevented a leave of absence during which physical therapy would have permitted me to return to work. I was forced to retain legal counsel to rectify. My employer did institute new policies and hired internal administrators to assist after I sent a certified letter to the CEO. If not for Sedgwick's failure I may not have needed to hire an attorney. It was not the failure of the company but rather the Worker's Comp Administrator Sedgwick.

@@jamestdawson Legal malpractice case maybe?

@@ThePeterDislikeShow The lawyer did what he was paid to do, which if not for Sedgwick's mishandling, I could have done. Their fees are typical, unfortunately. The problem is that Sedgwick is unregulated and incompetence is profitable. I have fully recovered and moved on. And my employer did take steps to rectify.

@@jamestdawson Glad you've made a recovery. In retrospect, do you have any tips for people before they get disabled to ensure i's are dotted and t's crossed?
