Hi guys. On this channel I will *always* keep it about the books, no matter the public perception of an author. If you feel that is a reason you can’t stick around the channel, that is 100% your choice and I respect that and wish you nothing but success and happiness in the future.

Same im still a big fan of the books, and defo separate the books from the author. Have you read the old kingdom series by Garth Nix first book is Called sabriel also a really good middle grade fantasy that seams to transcend older reading ages . I dont see many people talk about now as it a bit of an older series it also focuses another on death and loss and some of the main characters are necromancers.

Good on you, Mike. Tired of people letting public image affect the worlds that these authors create. Just keep it within what’s contained in the books. No retrospective analysis of what houses really mean etc. No, it was never about forcing values on kids etc, don’t think too much into it. It makes sense within the story, just enjoy it! Haha

My son was 11 years old when this came out in the States. He was not a reader before this but became an avid reader after reading the first book upon my insistence. Every year when the next book came out he was still Harry's age (until Book 4). He then went on to the Young Jedi series, Goosebumps, Animorphs, and never stopped. He is now in his mid-30s and reading is still one of his favorite activities, particularly in the science fiction/fantasy genres. It only takes the right books to make a child a reader.

The overarching theme of death and coming to terms with it as a natural part of life was really important to me growing up and losing loved ones. I know millions relate to this but it really struck me and the books have helped me overcome more than I could ever say. I've reread this series dozens of times over the last two decades and it's never diminished in my eyes. The worldbuilding isn't great and there are certainly plot holes galore, but that's not the point. There's more to focus on in this series and the messages stick the landing (in my opinion).

Brilliant review as always! When my daughter was reading this series as it came out I also read them! We were at many of those crazy midnight releases and it seems like we may never see a phenomenon like it again - where hundreds of people of all ages line up on cold evenings at a book store waiting for a new book in a series! I’ve read the series through twice and they remain some of my favorite books of all time. Besides being an incredible world filled with great ideas, imagination and wonder - JK Rowling is simply a brilliant storyteller that can tell her story to anyone at any age. My daughters still love them -they are 20 and 28 - my niece loves them who is 13 - my nephew loves them who is 32 - and I love them and I am in my 50’s! It is INCREDIBLY rare that an author can do this. In fact,I’ve read many fantasy series since then...but there is not ONE that I could say this about. Is there anything that you could recommend that would be even close to this?

I grew up with Harry Potter and, nostalgia aside, I think it’s a great series. The characters are fleshed out, the world building is engrossing (if at times inconsistent), and the story is compelling. Moreover, Rowling is a true storyteller and knows how to hook the reader. I last reread the series a couple of years ago as an adult, and I was glad to see I was still hooked and looking forward for the next chapter, even though I already knew how it ended. Not every author has that ability. There’s a reason why it became such a hit and people were dying to know what happened in the next installment, especially after book 6. It takes skill to write an engrossing book, let alone 7!

I read the whole series in a couple of months. Haggrid is perhaps my favorite character. It captivated my kids as well, and they’ve read it several times. I’m a big advocate for my kids to love reading, and I always tell them “Read what you enjoy.” I like the entire culture that has sprang up around it too, including the Fantastic Beasts movies. I think “Magic School” is becoming a subgenre all it’s own lol. Harry Potter did it, then Rothfuss did a version of it, and now Naomi Novik has one out lol.

Just wanna say thanks for the spoiler free video. You might think everyone knows what happens in the series but personally I have no idea of what the story is about other then what happened in the first movie. I read a lot of books back when I was in high school so you can’t say I refuse to read any books. I always thought Harry Potter was just a movie series. Our librarian never suggested any Harry Potter books for some reason but I did get to read many series before they became movies like Alex Rider, Percy Jackson, Maze Runner, Hunger games, divergent, etc etc... too many to list off. With my new job I am able to listen to audio books while working so I picked up “reading” again after 8 years or so of not reading. Having a blast rereading Alex Rider and looking forward to the new books released since i stopped reading. I plan to read Harry Potter next and with how everyone talks about the series, Im really excited to dive into it completely blind (not many people can say that nowadays haha) Cheers and thanks again!

Yep, I'm one of those who grew up with the series, and I'll never not enjoy rereading it and rewatching the movies. I think one of the best quotes from the series is by McGonagall in Philosopher's Stone when she says that every child in the (wizarding) world would grow up knowing his (Harry) name. Talk about foreshadowing. Even if people haven't read the books or watched the movies, they've still heard of Harry Potter.

On face value, yes it is a kids book at book 1. But something I like to note is, he goes to the mirror of Erised to look at his dead parents because he never knew them. And in book 3 he has a guilty pleasure for a lack of better words to hear his mothers voice, that isn't kid book stuff, that's deep shit

I was 20 when I started reading the series. Only the first four were out at point. I got into it by seeing the first movie. Binged those first four books and was excited for each new release. The only midnight release I went to was the one for Deathly Hallows. Dressed up and everything. My favorite books in the series are Prisoner of Azkaban and Deathly Hallows.

I read it as an adult, great series. Have the book box sets, and also the audiobooks by Jim Dale, which to me are the most enjoyable audio. I am picky with audio, but these are told in such a lively way they're a delight.

I think part of the discrediting for the series comes not only from the notion that it’s “for children”, but that it is immensely popular. There’s an inherent snobbery towards the series among die-hard fantasy readers because they associate popularity with bad taste. I’ve noticed that a lot of the snobbery for HP comes from LOTR’s fans. I remember there was even a hint of jealousy at the time at the peak of Harry’s popularity. I like both the LOTR and HP books and films. I have read many fantasy series for children and adults, and if they’re good, I enjoy them, regardless of their target audience and style. I’ve read many fantasy stand alones and series, and enjoyed most of them, but few have hooked me or charmed me like Harry Potter did. It is truly a special series.

Lol, exactly. A lot of hate towards HP comes from LOTR fans. While I have never seen HP fans hating LOTR. For Both HP and LOTR, I read the books much later after watching the films, and honestly speaking the LOTR series did not manage to hook me the way HP did. There is something about the way Rowling manages to hook the readers, that Tolkien doesn't possess. I finished reading the HP series in one seating, while for LOTR, I dropped it in the middle of the two towers. I was just bored out if my mind. Though I love the Hobbit book by Tolkien and have read it twice. But yeah, HP is far more relatable series compared to LOTR.

@@30goalsexactly. I read HP as an adult (21-22) wayyy after watching the films, same with LOTR. I don't really know how I missed it coz I love reading, but yeah, I don't think any other series has managed to hook me the way HP did, even though I already knew the whole plot. While for LOTR, I dropped it in the middle of the two towers, I just got bored out of my mind. Also not to be rude, but HP is far more relatable series than LOTR.

@@RabiyaRavenclaw I feel the same way. Tolkien's brilliance comes from his world-building, but he wasn't as good as a story-teller in my opinion. I think one of the things that makes Harry Potter so readable is that they are, at their core, as much mystery books as they are fantasies. Rowling is really skilled at setting atmosphere, creating a compelling conflict and likeable or deep characters that make you want to follow it through the end.

I really don''t disagree with anything you said in the entire video. I ignored this series until the first movie was about to come out. Less because I thought it was aimed at kids and more because I had no idea what it was really about. After seeing previews I grabbed the first four books and read them all within a few days. From then on I was hooked for life (I was in my early thirties at the time) and became an avid fan of both the movies and the books. The series will always hold a special place in my heart.

I went to the theater with my family when I was in college having never heard of Harry Potter before. When we left, I immediately crossed the street to the Bookends next door and bought that same 4-book boxset. Harry Potter turned me into an avid reader as an adult. Just pure coincidence that I *cough cough* got sick for the next 3 days and had to stay home to read those 4 books straight through. But, if you want more supporting evidence that nothing will ever be like HP, when book 6 came out you could immediately buy t-shirts that gave away the big spoiler. ("So-and-so /redacted/ on page 681" or whatever.) What fandom is so big that it warrants contemporaneous trolling merch!?

I'm not going to claim she wrote any masterpiece, but her books (mainly those from the 30's and 40's) are great!! So, if you like her, you know, maybe you could do a video on her... One of the best things that Harry Potter did was introduce kids into reading. At 45, when I was growing up we had few choices of books for teens. It was pretty much adult or kids books. Dragonlance was the series that hooked me in the 80s, but there wasn’t much else. (I was also read King as well which was way too adult looking back now).

I am apart of that group that started reading because my parents read me the books while we were on car trips. It was this series and The Hobbit that got me into fantasy and reading when I was younger. As a young child, being only 7-9 at the time, I can distinctly remember heading to the movie theatre between 2001 and 2003 to watch both Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and just being memorized. I can pretty confidently say that without these books and movies, I wouldn't be as avid a reader as I am today.

Ron Weasley is a great character and my favorite. I can see how people would assume they're for children but the books are following the journey of children after all. Coming from Patrick O'Brien Aubery and Maturin series, the books are such an easy read and very fun. I see myself reading the whole series start to end, I found myself this morning waking up and jumping straight back in to continue reading them. What I'm finding fascinating is that it feels like I'm watching deleted scenes as I'm imagining all of the characters in the movies and the scenes except now this is a special edition, haha.
