Why You Should Start Mock Scrapes Now, Tips And Tactics | Midwest Whitetail
On this week’s episode, we head out with Jared Mills and Kaleb Greiner as the guys set up a new mock scrape with the hope of monitoring summer antler growth. The guys walk us through each step of setting up new scrapes and discuss their experience using them as a tool to take inventory of an entire deer herd.

Another option to try in the scent department, i throw cotton swabs and a flip top plastic container in my hunting pack and when I harvest a doe or a buck I will rub the swabs are over the pre orbital and orbital glands, the tarsals, and even their bodies, throw them in the freezer and use the following year, pretty cheap and works great!
@MidwestWhitetailVideos
@MidwestWhitetailVideos 2 года назад
That is an excellent idea and one that we have not heard before. We have saved the tarsal glands from a mature buck but never any forehead scent. Thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching Matthew!

@@MidwestWhitetailVideos Surprises me that you guys haven't heard of that trick before. In addition to the cotton balls, I also use Q-Tips to swap the secretions from the inter-digital glands on the hooves. I learned those techniques back in the late '80s from some of the hunting books I bought back then. (Books- Handheld items with written words on paper pages that you turned by hand. No electronics involved.)

Tip for you I use, bring a portable drill innthe woods, drill holl through one end, feed rope through, attach with a nylon rope and tie it off a sturdy overhang branch , also, they work fantastic on field edges, rake underneath, take a pee in it, works awesome.

Don't even need to do that........just use a simple slip knot with the very end of the rope single knotted so it won't slip through.

@KalebGreiner 11 месяцев назад
Hey thats a great question Geo. I continue to get deer hitting them year round, the same deer too! Mostly depends on the farm and what i mean by that is that the properties i hunt, I notice some bucks have a summer range that may be 2mi from their core for the fall. This being said they come back through in the fall if its on the edge of their core and they continue to hit it not just in the fall but winter, spring and summer as well!

Agree with ~1" diameter, fairly straight, hung vertical with the bottom being around waist high. Disagree that it needs to be a vine (have proof that branches work), doesn't need to be relatively rigid (hang all mine from a rope) and no scents are needed. Got thousands of pics of all caliber of deer (and bear) visiting the site. Note too that the scrape site needs to be fairly level with space to move around or they may shy away.
@MidwestWhitetailVideos
@MidwestWhitetailVideos 2 года назад
The level ground observation is an excellent point! It definitely seems that they are more inclined to work scrapes if they have freedom to easily move around the site.Thanks for watching John!

My advice, keep mock scrapes simple. I wouldn’t use ANY attractant or deer urine the first time. Set up a vine and give it a couple weeks. If you don’t see any action or interest, then add an attractant and urine!

I pulled hundreds of feet of woodvine out of a dead oak on my property @ 🏡. 3 huge oak branches that separated from the trunk were actually held up by woodvine. I used arborist equipment to lower these branches & others down down to remove everything but the spar of the dead oak. In March & April I put out a dozen grape/wood vine in 2 different areas. Only hang in thick areas that r traveled well by deer closer to bedding areas heading to stands of oaks where the cover isn't so thick. Gives u a spot where u can have a 🦌 focus on something else & not u. I do this in public areas off the beaten trail which is harder to get to than most. When the timing is right I know b4 ( I get to my 🌳 that I pull myself up into with a climbing rope) where my camera is going to be pointing @. I put my camera out in mid-August up in the 🌳 I'm hunting out of angling down @ that licking spot. I got many short video mode captions last year & the woodvine is just something that I can hang with paracord tied tightly to a branch above that will entice deer but not people. If these were spots that people spent time going into I wouldn't be hanging a Browning camera just to get no video while risking the loss of a great hunting tool.

OK, so I been looking into setting up a vertical scrape this year. I dont have anything in the open to hang from. Typically Id sink a cedar post in the ground and then add an oak branch. I havent even done that yet on this property we just obtained last year. What would you do if you have nothing to hang from and wanted to get one out in the open? Im more likely to add the cedar post and horizontal oak branch until I get trees grown enough to do this. Before I watched this, I already wanted to stay away from my edges as those are going to be my stand locations and dont want deer coming to them anymore than necessary. In one area I am going to see if I can string a rope across a path and hang one that way but Im not sure I can get one across... This may be hard to visualize, but just assume there is NOTHING to hang from.
@johnschreier8150
@johnschreier8150 2 года назад
You can do the post method or just us another 3-5" tree trunk and do the same. Put it in the open and curiosity will get the best of them. The only thing is that this works better in the fall because the branches you attach will eventually die and become brittle.

We have had great success with a T post and a product called the scrape stick. It allows you to make a mock scrape basically anywhere you can drive a post without needing to set anything big. The bracket accepts branches of all sizes in which you can attach a vertical limb to the end of a sizable stick or branch. The scrape stick is not cheap but will last a lifetime!
