For anyone who is interested; When Tiffen created Pro Mist Filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal length lenses because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on a 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist Filters is 1/2 Promist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro Mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this is information is useful.

@matthewmaccarthy8542
@matthewmaccarthy8542 3 года назад
@@vicenteromero6946 the only "rule" I would recommend is to decrease the strength of the filtration as the focal length of the lenses get longer. But as for how the intensity of the filtration is affected by the size of the sensor I am not certain. I can see it how it would be though. I only ever used pro-mist filter when shooting 35mm film which I believe is similar in size to aps-c sensors. I would just do lots of testing. I hope this helps.

Great comparison! I have watched a number of RU-vid videos on the Pro Mist filters. I think like so many things it’s subjective. 1/8 looks just right, but once you get to 1/2 it starts to become mush. The contrast or lack of it in the lighting will of course make a difference as well.

Hi William, glad you liked the video. The G85 is a very capable camera, especially when paired with a decent lens. Is there any way to get a Tiffen Black ProMist filter on an Irix 15mm 2.4 with a 95mm filter thread to keep a small profile of the setup? Tiffen here don't sell the size 95mm unfortunately... The Irix also has a rear gel filter holde however, so is it possible to use that slot instead maybe? To somehow cut a small filter to size and have it at the rear of the Irix? I will also use a Speedbooster and is there alternatively a possibility to put a filter in there somehow instead?
