dont major in cs because you wont find a job unless you are top 2% . become engineer

great video as always Michael. An idea for a future video would be: A commentary on the toxicity that can come from reading /r/cscareerquestions and TeamBlind? While both places have their pros and cons in their own merit, they also both have the fair share of entitlement, and also how intoxicating it can be seeing these big 6 figure compensations, then wallowing in your own boots, thinking “FAANG or bust!”, when there are so many other great careers and opportunities in computer science!

This was a refreshing and honest take. Your first point about many majors working in tech is valid, but if a student already wants to work in tech, I don’t see any reason to take a less direct path than CS. I’m not sure Fluke is a good representation of boot camp success; it doesn’t seem like he ever got a software job he actually enjoyed. I think we all _want_ college to matter less and allow students to study whatever they want in college, but it’s still clear that 1) the career prospects of a degree matter more now than ever, 2) CS is objectively the best undergrad major and 3) a CS degree is the easiest way to get into tech and maximize opportunity. This pandemic has also proven (unfortunately) that a massive portion of opportunity in the US economy is concentrated in tech. Anyone who has even a small interest in computers & software should seriously consider studying CS.

You make a lot of good points! I guess when I say "working in tech" that doesn't exclusively mean being a software engineer. If you do want to be a software engineer, you're right that computer science is probably the most direct path. Obviously this will probably vary based on what role in "tech" you want to go into (i.e. if you want to work in hardware, a major in computer engineering will be more valuable than just computer science). Also for other roles like program/product/project management, I've noticed that a lot of PMs didn't major in CS, despite mostly working on technical products. Other PMs I personally know at Apple, DocuSign and Microsoft had majors in either cognitive science or management science. So I guess I just wanted to highlight that you don’t have to be a software engineer to work in tech!

I want your advice, my local college offers IT degree at a significant discount(because it is online). While CS degree at full cost. I want to become software developer, but I am not sure which route to go with. I know in fact that IT is technically easier, but they don’t focus so much on algorithms, data structures and AI, their course are pretty much generalized.
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 3 года назад
Ya from what I know of IT, I'm not sure if it'll cover computer science fundamentals or not, but I am not a recruiter so I'm not sure if it actually matters. But saving money where you can should definitely be a priority. Another option could be to look into a coding bootcamp for a cheaper, more programming heavy education! Sorry I couldn't help too much, but good luck!

CS is a blow off major. The truth it is that programing can be learned in 3 months, and stretching it out for a 4 years is just a waste. If you are going to college stick with some kind of engineering as those require labs, which you cant really do at home, and yes they are harder because they are real majors.

Im a cs major. If I could go back, I would've majored in something else. Major in something you can't teach yourself and/or something you wouldn't bother teaching yourself due to difficulty. I thought cs was it, but tbh, i've taught myself pretty much everything I've learned thus far. Junior, going on senior, it's not that bad.

The sad thing about getting a computer science degree is not being able to call my self a self taught developer anymore, this degree will get the credit with everything I do despite the fact that I learned 5 programming languages alone

Same dude. I dropped IT back in 11th grade, always struggled with Mathematics. Only recently found interest in AI but from the shallow level. Still send one application to University for Computer Science degree. Really doubt they will accept me.

I knew before I wasnt going to be fit to be in CS anyway of how bad I am really at math.. I have to take business or something else ;/.. The only way I can take CS is I gotta put in 100x the work.

My school - Arizona State University - has a new major called Applied Computer Science that ditches most of the math and is closer to an IT or IM degree. Anyone who is afraid of the math in CS (and you should be afraid) but wants to do a formal degree should look into these CS-lite type degrees.

Can I ask if CS major requires extremely good math (calculus, advanced math) to work in this field after graduation? I am currently a college student in this major, currently studying calculus 3. However, I feel that this level of mathematics is a challenge for me, I have difficulty understanding all the lectures and problems in this course. I am wondering if this could cause any problems later in the future as a college student majoring in CS. Hope you can helpme with this! P / s: Btw, I also live in Seattle. It will be a huge opportunity for me if I can talk to you more, I really need some advice from others in the field I am pursuing.
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 3 года назад
For regular computer science the math generally stops at Calculus and Discrete mathematics. I think if you push through you should be alright! On the job as software engineer it’ll be rare for you to use pure calculus anyway (but it’ll depend on the specific job). Advanced math can get super hard, but I’ve always found asking professors and teaching assistants for help usually helps reduce the stress! Good luck!

Yeah I think I’ll switch majors, always liked programming and computer science since I was 13 and now I’m 2 years into my polisci degree to get into law school but I don’t find it very interesting even tho my GPA is decent at 3.5. I figure I might as well switch to something I enjoy doing and with better prospects in the future (lawyers are not doing good right now..)

I'm having a hard time choosing between Computer engineering and Mechanical engineering. What are your thoughts on these majors? (I like everything from math to physics to coding. Everyone says that computer related majors are the best because of the current situation. But on the other hand some people say you don't need a computer science degree to do job in that field. Everything is making my head spin lol)
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 2 года назад
Unfortunately I can't really tell you what to do as its mostly based on what you'd like to do more. From my knowledge, computer engineering and mechanical engineering are both quite hardware focused, but with computer engineering being obviously more specific to computers. But honestly if you want to do computer science related jobs, computer engineering is probably more closely linked to that! Good luck!

@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 3 года назад
Its awesome that you are starting early! I'd suggest working on some easy side projects, or start to learn some programming languages. You could also look into joining any programming clubs at your school, or take some computer science classes if they have them at your school!
@MSneberger
@MSneberger 3 года назад
Math, math, and more math. If you can test out of Calc I and hit the ground running in Calc II once you get into a CS program you will have a huge head start. And learn C/C++ and Java because while you will eventually come around to Python in a CS program, the real work gets done in C/C++ (think Linux Kernel) and Java (any app related to Android).

It really depends on your team. For me, the bottleneck in development was available engineers, so I had to pick up some of the coding to keep product development on track!

Just wanted to say great video first all. It was a different perspective on things. Wanted to ask your advice on something... I have been programming since 10 or 11 however I don't rlly feel like programming unless it is applied to something I love or the problem just attracts my interests. Would a computer science degree be right for me or should I take a more alternative route?

Do I need to major in comp sci to become a web developer? For me, comp sci is so general and covering too many things. It’s getting hard for me in the 1st year at uni and thinking of transfering to business but also learning web development on my side. Do u have any advice for me?
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 2 года назад
I personally don't think its needed to major in CS but it would beneficial. If you are just more casually interested in web dev and like business more, then go business. But if you want to be a web developer or eventually transition to other areas of software engineering, having a CS degree will definitely help! But these are just my opinions so take them with a grain of salt!
