I remember those first couple of months of learning to ride a Spyder, those "yikes" moments of taking a curve a little too fast and the feeling that the Spyder was trying to toss me off 😳 It does take a little while to learn to trust the Spyder, and the "push" method does get you there faster. I think I learned that from you, the method simply was maintaining a relaxed grip, relax the fingers. Then using the palms to steer, which meant using the "push" method, combined with leaning your body in the direction of the turn. And then the brain soon realizes the push method naturally gives you the leverage to not only lean your bidy, but it helps to eliminate the sensation of the Spyder trying to toss you off going around those tight bends and turns. It simply works, and you also begin to trust and have confidence that your Spyder will also not tip over. And you still might giggle to yourself as you learn to stop extending your fingers from reaching for the front brake and clutch levers 🙄😅 Great advice, less is more, relax the fingers and relax the grip, let the Spyder go straight like it wants to. Your explanations are so valuable to new Spyder riders, Coach Bob 😁👍👍

Just got a 2023 f3s. So far enjoying the hell out of it. I ride a lot of back roads. An the spyder is a LOT more stable and predictable on less than great surfaces. Sounds funny but it's like flying a rc helicopter. Gentle inputs carefully considered is the way to go.

Keep in mind that some Spyders may be slightly “toed” out instead of slightly “toed” in… if a vehicle is “toed” out, they will head for the ditches continuously. If they are “toed” in, each wheel will try to either go straight, or steer towards the other tire, each tire will hold the vehicle going where you point it. Too much “toe” in and it will wear the tires prematurely…

I went from riding a Goldwing and was having a terrible time with the constant movement on the 2020 Spyder RTL. The steering is so sensitive its crazy! Now that I’m used to it, its a great ride. Just take the time to get used to it and relax, the steering is very responsive!

Great vid Bob! So many new riders don’t get it on the Spyder right off. I had to “trial by fire” learn on mine. 600 miles on a 2012 RT with traffic, thunderstorms, high winds, and bad road construction from Houston to Jackson MS my first time out! I remembered from one of your vids that less is more on the bars. Thanks again!

First 600 miles I thought I made a big mistake going from Harley to Spyder -because of the steering issues. Took awhile to adjust.

I am not running a tanks bag. My Gps is the Zumo XT made by Garmin and I am currently using the quad lock phone out. I really like the format of the quad lock. I mounting everything to the Spyder by using the Lamonster Spyder Cuff. It works wonderfully and is very solid. Thanks so much for watching.

Great video. In some ways I had a huge advantage when I first started riding my Spyder. I never rode a motorcycle, so really had nothing to compare it to. You are so right, the Spyder does want to go in a straight line, less is more. I would say the biggest thing to get used to is the rear tire. We get a lot of frost damage on our roads. The crown in the road is very pronounced. It's impossible to keep the rear tire in the middle of the crown, nor should you try. Just think of driving a motorcycle, you would never drive in the middle of the crown, but pick one side of it. Can't do that with a Spyder. You drive with the two front wheels on each side of it, and the rear wheel ends up in the middle of the crown and it doesn't want to stay there. So if you let the Spyder do what it wants, it moves slightly from side to side, riding both sides of the crown. Took a few hours to get used to that, but don't even think about it anymore. Hopefully you understand what I am trying to explain.

I usually use my left hand most of the time . just had a nice 3 day ride 1100 km with a friend riding is harley in beautiful tadousac area . little yellow ryker did fin up down and curvy byway , even a boat ride to Iles au noix ,thank for your video always instructive.

I ride both 2 wheels and a Goldwing trike. I found when I started riding the trike was to remember when turning to keep the pressure on the bars going through the turn, because the trike wants to go straight. Now ut is second nature.

Thanks for making this video. After I got my 3 wheel license, I took a 2024 Spyder RT Limited for a 1 hour test drive. The speed was mostly 25 to 35 mph. This is what I noticed the most was me over steering. I never thought about my brain trying to ride it like a 2-wheel bike. It did get easier as I got used to the bike. I rode a Ryker 600 on my class/test, a big difference in the Spyder RT. I hope that you and your family are doing well. God bless and I will be riding the motorcycle of my dreams.

23' Spyder RT Limited here. I realize Coach Bob knows, but he missed the note (you're still awesome coach) that the power steering 'power' adjusts to the speed you are at during/at the turn. The strength needed to turn will vary based on the current speed. All models? Hmm, that I don't know. Grizz

Thanks for the great Spyder videos, and the great advise. I live in Oregon outside Portland and ride a Spyder RT. I used to live in town and honestly the Spyder didn’t like it, too much low speed riding. But now highways and rural roads are more accessible and the bike can get out and go. I’m 71 BTW. I got my endorsement to ride when there was no 3-wheel training only 2 wheel (Team Oregon), but still that training was invaluable, in being aware on any bike. I also own a 38 feet diesel pusher motorhome so also know about how big vehicles and trucks handle and respond. You’ve reinforced some ideas I’ve had and built on your advise. Our rural roads are fun to ride on but twisty and sometimes rough and broken pavement or potholes are a common occurrence. Some of my rules. 1. Ride smoothly and don’t over react. Ride through a rough spot. 2. I ride line 1 as you put it, as much as I can. I only deviate to avoid a hazard. 3. I love you ‘knee rule’ to straddle a small obstacle in the road. I’m going to start working on that more. 4. Look thru a turn, look where you want to go. 5. Push or pull with one hand on a turn or to swerve to avoid something (the other hands only stabilizing). 6. If you hit a rough spot on a turn and you feel the bike ‘jump’ to the outside, just hold your line and if anything, make a tiny correction. 7. I do need to work on a more relaxed grip especially with the right (throttle) hand. I often realize (too late) my grip is tighter. I can tell there are times when it all goes so smoothly, turns seem effortless and the ride is relaxed and easy, but then there are those times… What works best for me is to slow down and relax but think about the basic rules. Thanks again.

Great video Bob. I have taught a few of our group here in Australia the same stuff about light grip. I also get them to ensure their machine is correctly maintained. That being correct tyre pressure and wheel alignment. The thing you did, but put into different terms, was trust your machine. The Vulcan death grip comes from not trusting the Spyder. Just like any good partnership, trust in yourself and your partner (the Spyder) and you will be fine. I will be saving this in my favourites to share with people in the future. Thanks mate, ride safe, and good health to you and your family.

Great video Coach!! I use to ride two-wheels when I was much, much, much younger (maybe too many of the "much" on that, lol) but my first ride on the Spyder really threw me. I felt it was quite "squirelly" and wasn't sure about the ride, but once I learned to "let go" and just let the bike doing the main work and I, as the rider, was meant to just guide when my input was needed, things became so much clearer and easier. Thanks again for the video, and hope to see you out there soon!!

Great video Bob as usual. For myself not any problems to learn driving a Spyder. I can see why some people would have a problem to learn though. Really is different. But seeing I have had a opportunity to run 2 wheel,3 wheel trike, atv, utv, snowmobile, and now my Spyder, it is fairly easy for myself. For all the people out there that have or are having steering problems just keep at it. Will come in time I am sure.

Thanks for this video, as always very informative. I'm gonna wrap it up as "You lead the Spyder, you don't force it". I let a Spyder rider ride my Ryker a couple of days ago and when he returned after a short drive, he went: "holy crap, you really gotta work this thing", which says enough about the power steering on the Spyder.

Excellent video. A few things to note, not only are roads crowned at the center line, but are often crowned within the lane. Newly paved roads often open to traffic before the new pavement can set, resulting in the car tire paths being lower than the area under the car. Your trike's front tires ride in the car tire's path and your rear rides on the crown within the lane. The tire path often varies, causing the trike to shift as you ride. Also, someone gave me excellent advice - sit and place your hands as if you're at a piano, resting on the keys. That's all the grip you need to steer.
