Not using the death grip is an important part of riding the Spyder. Coming from 2 wheels, it took me a bit to train myself to use a feather grip on the bars. In strong wind, I had an issue with not wanting to be blown off (strong grip) vs keeping a light grip (more stable riding). My recent ride on I-8, east from Desert Tower, down the grade, was an adventure. I watched you/Coach V, and a few other Spyder vlogs before buying mine. It helped me have a clue when I started riding. As always, my best to you and Coach V . Edit: I think Bombardier missed it by not having a front brake lever. It's much easier to "cover" with a right hand lever than to have to lift your foot off the floorboard to cover.

One of the best videos I have seen. Long time bike rider I thought I was going to die the first time I rode my new Spyder. Eventually figured out the principles you so clearly displayed. Should be seen by all new Spyder riders especially those that come from two wheels.

Thanks coach Bob for the riding tips. I always tell people that the Spyder drives like a snowmobile and for those of us from the snow belt snowmobiles are what BRP does. You don't have to 'steer' it all the time, you just let the machine do its thing. 'Look where you want to go' is great advice and is a skill too. Take care.

Hi Coach Bob! Lifelong two wheeler here. After a 3 year break from riding due to physical limitations, I purchased a Spyder. I have only been on secondary two and sometimes 4 lane roads practicing my skills. Driving at appropriate speeds, sometimes as much as 60-ish Yesterday, and for the first time, I brought my 2020 Spyder F3t on the Interstate. I rode from Huntsville to Birmingham Al. down US 65. The heavy multi-lane speeding traffic, wind gusts from 18 wheel tractor trailers, and overly aggressive drivers, made me wish I'd been better prepared for the trip. I've learned quite a lot from watching your videos, I was hoping you have a video with advice on the subject of high speed highway driving and maybe tips on suspension tuning to tighten up the ride some. You have a gift for teaching and I truly enjoy watching your videos. Thank you

During my BRP 3 wheel rider course we were taught to squeeze the bike with our knees in turns and as you point out it is quite effective at counteracting centrifugal force. What I have found works better for me is planting my outside foot on the floorboard in turns. Additionally it helps push my body to the inside in turns

In the last 3 1/2 months of my ownership of a Can Am F3 limited I have learned so much from your videos. As a former Harley rider of over 50 years you have taught me a lot about the proper transition from 2 wheels to 3 wheels, especially on this type of 3 wheeler. You have helped me become a better Can Am rider than I thought I could by watching your videos and then going out and practicing them. Thanks much for what you do.

great video for new riders, i have been riding 2 wheels for 51 years. when i decided to get a spyder due to back problems. it was like learning to ride again. i stayed on two lane roads for about 500 miles. to learn how to steer , after that i started on the interstate, the more i rode the better i got. bringing the habits of two wheels is not a good thing.

I think in all vehicle types .. albeit a conventional automobile, 2 or 3 wheels. There are overlapping skill sets. So I agree that not “all” of them apply. But, many do. My biggest obstacle in my “learning curve” on the Spyder was oversteering and counter steer.

Great info Coach. I was always told is grip your handlebars like you're holding an egg. Your right that the Death grip transfer to the front wheels. My very first ride on the Spyder, I did that. Lesson was learned even before I took the 3 wheeled riding class. For me personally, I like the thick grips so I put grip puppies even before I took the first ride in the neighborhood.

Really good video. I’ve only been riding my RT for a year, with about 8,300 miles, but you’ve just shown me several things that I didn’t know and that I need to work on. Like you indicated, you may never need that particular skill, but if you do then knowing what to do can save your life. Along that thought, knowing that skill you may be subconsciously incorporating that into your daily ride skills and by doing so keep you out of danger by not allowing yourself to get in that situation. I’ve made lots of rookie mistakes and watching your videos has made me a better rider. Also, your older video about highway riding allowed me to be able to ride the interstate highways. Gave up the “Vulcan death grip” and it all fell into place. Thanks for what you do because it really helps pass on skills that us newbys need to survive.

You are on it today! The first time I rode my Spyder on the hwy, I was darting all over the lane. I had a “death grip” on the handlebars. Someone (could have been you) told me to “lighten up Francis” and that makes all the difference. Your one finger example shows this perfectly. Great tips Coach!

Great Video Coach Bob! I am transitioning from 50 years on two wheels to a Spyder (hopefully gets her in August). I have wondered and had concerns that you helped answer. I have taken a lot of advanced rider courses over the years not to be a squirrel but to be safer; however, skills that help you get out of a bad situation also help you “have fun” when you ride some place like “Tail if the Dragon”. I have been a Senior Road Captain and Chapter director in the past and videos like yours are helpful. Oh the high number of accidents in right hand turns may also have a contributing factor in that if you are pushing on the right bar to counter steer into it also means that you have to be conscious of what your hand is doing on the throttle…. Just a thought there… Anyway great video and very informative. Hope to meet you sometime after I get the Spyder F3 limited Keep the shiny side up brother!!

As always, spot on. My only complaint would be that it is May the Fourth and no reference to Star Wars yet a reference to the Vulcan Death Grip. How could mix metaphors?????? 😁😁😉 The plus is on a Spyder is you can easily shift your weight without the bike doing something unexpected. That point makes it comfortable to ride not fearful. 😉

I just bought a used 2022 Ryker, and boy did I have an eye opener. I started riding at the age of 12 and still riding at 66. I took the bike back to where I bought it and a guy came out to give me a real lesson on riding a Ryker. I had to loosen my grip and go with the flow. It's getting better. I am up to 55 and 60 mph now, before 45 was it. Learning to love it now.

Thank you, I learned this stuff on my own riding the highly technical mountain roads here in NC. I have had my helmet within six inches of a rock wall hot footing it. One problem up there is the cagers that do not stay in their lane. It gets real exciting... One othing I learned from the LT of a local police dept doind a ride safe program is use you line in the lane as part of better riding. How you go through the corner affects your vision going down the rode. He recommended entering on the outside of the turn and got to the inside then back out as you exit. It makes for better performance, but also let's you see that cager in your lane earlier

Yep, I have taught myself to be active with my body like that while riding to keep up with my two-wheel buddies. Sitting upright is just no fun and makes it hard to keep up. However, I use both arms when taking harder turns: the inner arm is pulling while the outer one is pushing the handlebar as far away as possible, my body is twisting on the bike in the direction of the turn and my head turns even more than the body to look ahead at where I am going and not directly in front of me. Of course, all this activity is like a full-body workout after an entire day on this bike and if the turns are up the mountain you also will be shifting the gears a lot at the same time, which is another challenge.

Spyder's don't require an MC license and are automatic so most never take the time to learn emergency handling. Once I got passed in the corners by someone on a spyder that blew me away by getting off the seat to lean in to corners. Anytime I ask spyder riders about that they ALL say "I never do that".

I tried the 'push-only' steering on my ride tonight. Made a world of difference in smoothness, and I didn't have to make nearly as many minor course corrections. It's way better than the 'push-pull' method they teach you in the MSF course. Still have a long way to go before I can get my body off the seat in sharper turns, but one step at a time, right? 😁Thanks, Coach!

Something I learned soon after getting my RTL was that at Interstate speeds, if you put a "Death Grip" on the bars, you will set up a front end oscillation that gets worse the harder you fight the bars. And if you don't ease off, it will quickly get beyond control. Use a light touch and let the bike Track.

AAAHHHHH!!! LOL I know your subject is how the Spyder handles turning and how to turn, but I’m a safety advocate. You do not cross a solid yellow line to go around someone who’s turning just because you don’t feel like slowing down enough to allow the person to finish turning. You just don’t! You make that a habit and you’re gonna get hurt . . . Or worse. Please follow safety rules even while making an instructional video. Otherwise a GREAT video. Thank you! 😊

nice video. I am getting ready to go from 2 wheels to 2 wheels , you were very helpful. You have all the extras on you spider, where would you put a ez pass if you had to use it.

In Florida we use the sun-pass which the transponder has suction cups which allows me to mount it on my windshield when traveling on the Spyder. They tell me that I can put it in a saddlebag... I have never tried that..but, sun-pass swears it will work. Here is a very thorough article on the use of the ez-Pass on a motorcycle it is very informative.. www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-ez-pass-toll-transponder-holders/ That make an ez-pass mount for motorcycles that is available on amazon. Here is one. www.amazon.com/dp/B07S5FC21G/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?pd_rd_i=B07S5FC21G&pd_rd_w=OR2m5&content-id=amzn1.sym.e620829b-a408-427e-99ea-7ac734a316f7&pf_rd_p=e620829b-a408-427e-99ea-7ac734a316f7&pf_rd_r=ZMW1AF4J2DVR7V8BJHRJ&pd_rd_wg=5ajyj&pd_rd_r=f8bfcad4-b158-4d3a-911d-6c5527cc9588&s=automotive&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFMWEU3NjlSOVRJVjEmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA1OTUxNjUyT0U5NUFRVEFJNkg1JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAzNTcxMzAxT0pXNE1XNzU2VUI5JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsX3RoZW1hdGljJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

@@CoachBob3 I just heard a couple of days ago at the dealership , that some people put it inside the front trunk attach to the hood and others attach it to the small glove box above the dash . The lid of the glove box looks like a perfect fit for the ez pass. Hopefully when the Electronic mod. comes in I will get my spider. I only ordered it last November. lol. o well. hopefully soon.

I'd like to see you compare your Spyder RT and a "similar" sport bike on Tail of the Dragon and compare times. :) Same rider, back-to-back rides. :) Me and my wife want a Spyder really bad. I just sold my HD Road glide :(

Do you have advice for a person that is 410 learning to ride

Hi Bob, My wife and I just took our 1st demo on an RT limited. I noticed right off the bat that the steering was super sensitive and figured out very quickly l would need to relax and would not need a lot of input. I also found out quickly that on a 55 MPH left sweeper I needed to slow down and make a right hand turn in the mid of the left sweeper and that set me up for some minor swerving 1st to the right then left before slowing enough and making the right turn. Wow! So anyway, your tutorial here explained a lot about why that happened. I also have a question. When your wife is on the back do you stay at speed limits and sit up straight or do you lean into the turn as you would when you ride solo? I'm watching a lot more of your Vid's now. Great info and you are a good teacher.

I adjust my speed when the Mrs. is on board. I don't think its conscious...I just end to ride more slowly and cautiously with her on the CanAm..generally speaking. Thanks for your thoughtful comment... I am glad you're here.

I just got my motorcycle permit and am planning on buying a Spyder in the next month or so. Would you recommend a training course before having some practice time or getting some practice driving before a training course. I’ve never driven a motorcycle before so I’m not sure what is a good order to do things. I feel like I should take a training course before trying to drive.

I always recommend as much training as you can get. Even after you have years under your belt.. the quest to be a better and safer rider is very important. I do everything from track days to parking lot obstacle courses. Learn..Learn..Learn. That's the greatest question ever!!! 👍👍👍

So my 22 RT Limited pulls toward the edge of the rd all the time on back roads. I live in a rural area and the 2 lane roads defa have a raised center line…but I find myself always adjusting to the left. Any advice?
@CoachBob3
@CoachBob3 Год назад
First I would make sure that on roads that don't have a high crown that the Spyder is tracking properly. Which I'm sure it probably is. Which means it is definitely the road condition. Ride a lot of country roads that do this. The easiest solution I have found is to put your front wheels in the "trenches" in the asphalt created by the wheels of the heavier vehicles. That will smooth it out significantly. Also....through time and muscle memory you will develop a touch on the handlebar...in fact so much of one... that you won't even recognize the crown of the road anymore. Thanks for the question. I am glad you're here.

the one thing that drives me nuts is watching the person in front of me chopping the turns, outside inside outside inside.. pick a line an perform a nice sweeping arc... yeah i said i crashed in a previous viedo but i also ran out of asphalt with no warning signage

I think experience and trust make all of the difference. It took quite a while for Coach Vic to get super comfy back there. Now my biggest problem on long trips is keeping her awake. lol
