Long time guard player here, what I’m thinking is: hrmmm… yes, another squad of guardsmen ought to round this list out nicely. Maybe two or three. Always good advice sir.

a couple of points that the vid rattled around in my head. 1) no plan survives contact with the enemy. its worth baking in some wiggle room. if my greay knigh incessor unit that i have on Harrassment just gets ubernuked off the board in a hail of saves of 1 what do i do to take up the slack? what about if my brotherhood squad thats supposed to be sitting on the Secure objective gets neutered by sudden application of Abbodon to the face? units need to be supported by that 500 points at the end of the list to do their jobs, but also to take over those jobs if the winds of fate fudge your plan over. 2) skew lists do things differently. if you are running Grey knights, thats like 40 heavy elite bodies on the field, melee focused and highly reddeployable. i think every unit is just baller at actions due to the army redeploy rules, but their shooting attacks might as well be with paintball guns. or a guard swarm is just hideous. they just brought 4 leman russes and 200 men, your argument is invalid. what do they put in the killzone? idk lets just send 50 men and a tank. the secure zone? idk, maybe 50 men and a tank. how do we harrass them? oh i know! 50 men and fire support from a tank! whats on the home objective? hmm, tough one. maybe a tank and 25 men? that will only leave us 25 men and a tank for the rest but thats fine.

Great intermediate guide imo. I feel like your strategy is something I always kinda did in the back of my mind but this help me allocate where I need to send what units. This makes me feel more confident with the list I’m now building.

For any interested marines players: I just did some math on comparing assault intercessors with jump packs vs terminators as a rapid ingress unit. 10 intercessors for 170 is flat better than 5 terms for 185 in every category that they can fight if the intercessors are getting the mortal wounds on the charge. The intercessors are a bit less durable but also have more than double the movement

Though I do wonder when it comes to Secure Objective Examples: You mention the very solid tyranid maleceptor but you also mention the tyranid warriors. 3 of those will drop like flies in 40k 10th edition in my experience. I've crushed him pretty much every game. I've tried to articulate all the stuff to him that you've said here but you put it so much better than I ever could I think this will really help him out. I just played at my first tourney as 2k pt DG with only a few choices from a competitive lists & I learned a lot. I cannot blame DG's movement because how I moved them sucked ass so this is definetely for me.

Not bad advice, but I'd add a few things to round it out: - Not every army is well suited for a "dominate the center by force" strategy, and depending on the matchup just auto-piloting this same strategy is going to lose you the game. Often you want to sit back and set up, let the enemy take the center, and simply make a play for the secure/home objectives with superior mobility (or step out and wipe them from the middle with glass cannon units that you keep in safety for this purpose). Figuring this out requires a good sense of the relative power of your datasheets, and what they're good at. People have to do some research to know this for sure. - Lone Op units are often the best way to hold your secure objective because of how shooty the game is. A unit like Heavy Intercessors is just a stat check that some shooting army can overcome. A lone operative doesn't care how good their shooting is: they can either reach it or they can't do anything about it. - Armies should start listbuilding by asking themselves *how they play the mobility secondaries*, not focusing first on primary. It's really easy to score fairly well on primary in 10th edition, but you really need to intentionally build to be able to score mobility/action secondaries given how the cards are written (roughly 1/3 are based on board position, roughly another 1/3 require objective holding, and the last 1/3 require killing). If you don't have units for this, then you will get screwed by the deck pretty regularly. Some armies (like Chaos Knights) NEED to bring allies to do this. Other armies (like Tyranids) have tons of easy tools already. Doing this analysis FIRST will help you decide how many points you have left to play the primary and actually fighting back against the enemy directly and playing the primary game. - It's worth considering "skew" from both angles. Does your list have a way to "stat check" the enemy by being, say, all infantry or all tanks or all monsters or all elite infantry? Can you handle a skew list if it just rushes you down and tries to table you? Often "all comers" lists with a gameplan like the one you suggest fall apart the second they run into an army leaning heavily into a skew strategy. - PLAN YOUR CP EXPENDITURES IN LIST BUILDING. If you are playing tactical, you can afford to ditch around 1-3 cards for CP during the game, which gives you between 11-13 CP to play with. You should know exactly which strats you are budgeting to use every turn, which ones you're planning to use for free, and so forth, and deploying accordingly. I run a Tyranid list where my plan is to have the 5+++ FnP strat online on two targets during each of my opponent's turns using a Hive Tyrant and the 1 CP I gain on their turn. This means if I want to save up for an Adrenal Surge on my own turn I need to either start saving a turn in advance, or I need to bin a secondary card for that extra CP so I have it when my turn rolls around next. - Consider your "footprint" in terms of how much physical space your list takes up, and practice deploying on the tables you are likely to play. You would be surprised how hard it can be to hide all your important stuff if it's HUGE, or you have a lot of it. I have cut units in the past because they are too big.

I listen to a lot of strategy and tactics video but this one is one of the best I've stumbled. I'm going to my first tournament next month and this has helped me strategize (and pilot) the list I'm throwing together.

So it’d be great if you took this framework and looked at specific armies and identifying which data sheets are good for each role. I play Leagues of Votann, among other armies, and I know that they are essentially not an army yet, but not having any examples for them in this video means I have to figure it out myself entirely. Which I could probably do, but, well, I’m watching this video for a reason! That said, very good video. Will have to consider this methodology in the future.

This has to be the best overall tactical advice video I have ever seen for any objective based wargame. I always have a problem with deployment in any wargame and this video here pointed out a major flaw in my thinking, that I pick "good" units without actually planning their goals other than "kill the enemy". i play tau (and deamons but tau give me the most trouble) my WL ratio is 0:13. I try with tau but i die to enemy fire, and melee. I would hide but the enemy army moves too quickly getting into melee. ANY TIPS. always getting tabled in 2 turns is massively demoralizing.

Really sounds oriented towards space marines. Does not seem to be a decent plan for a daemon army. We just don't have good choices for most of this.

Great video. This is exactly what I have been wanting. Not some cookie cutter but reasoning behind why to do something so I can make my own decisions based on that. Not just the latest meta but something to build on and try your own ideas.

An amazing video. One question from me: What would be good center objective brawlers for Space Marines? Outside of dreadnoughts, they have nothing really tanky. An assortment of tanks? Or simply push a few squads of Marines with different weapon loadouts?

Specifically for Necrons, my tips are: For Kill Zone holding, keeping a 20 blob of warriors with a Overlord with Resurrection Orb, and Hypermaterial Ablator enhancement are nigh unkillable. Backing them up with Lokhust destroyers makes them very difficult to move. Another tip is using a Veil of Darkness Royal Warden with a 20 man blob of warriors and a Monolith can allow so much harrassment shenanigans.

I generally feel I'm pretty decent at list building and focusing on secondaries and I can get into a situation of most games I'll end on a fairly decent vp score I just either end up getting tabled or have such a small army from some indirect fire or simply just that I can't effectively deal with tanks with my preferred faction (sisters of battle). My strength weapons commonly cap at 9 (excluding a handful of guns like exorcist with its strength 10 indirect missiles, paragon maces) and it leaves me playing 100% for secondaries with the occasional saint Katherine melta bomb lethal hits on a single target. My list right now consists of exorcists as my main fire power to remove some noticable threats I run two so I can actually kill a unit in a shooting round. Paragons to apply some okay tankiness with full rerolls thanks for morvenn, pentients for some good ap-0 flamers and finally a good amount of seraphim for more ap-0 flamers but 18" deep strike movement for back objectives and corners. I don't feel like I have a detachment and when I win games my opponent usually complains "it's seriously stupid that you got to just change your saves to a 6" 😅 when it comes down to your roles I have all those units excluding rapid ingress my seraphim usually can rapid in but it's far from ideal

Thanks for putting this together. A lot of youtubers dont really go into how the units fit into the army and match CONTEXTUALLY. Usually, they'll just go into the stat lines and abilities and go from there.

Great video, I would love to see more videos like this, potential lists and styles of play using these rules. I literally saw it right before I played a game, so couldn’t change my list (I lost 😂). I did try and play the strategy of the diving up the battlefield. I have I few questions; do you have rough estimate of how many points you set for each division? Can you combine harassment objective and rapid ingress? For example, brutalis dread rapid ingressing in and shaking things up

This is a great video and is definitely going to help me with my builds going forward. I'm still kinda new tho and I'm curious how these tactics work for armies that don't really start on the board. I'm a GSC player and I often find I can hold my home objective and maybe contest the middle with infiltrating aberrants but I can't really commit to other objectives until later. Often my opponent might have resources on everything. hmm, as I'm writing this I think I should pay closer attention to where they send their units and let that dictate how I deep strike on the battlefield. Try to avoid their secure objective and overwhelm them on an objective they don't have much OC on, maybe?

GW designs their game to sell models. It will never be balanced so long as they drink their own Koolade. I don't suck, their system does. I've been playing One Page Rules a lot lately and I notice the difference in strategy plays. I'm just endlessly disappointed in GW, which figures because they're British.

I blew up mozrog with my chaos vindicator in 1 turn. He is relatively easy to wound but hard to kill because of the 4+++.

Do you have any kill zone objective holder recommendations for Tyranids? It doesn’t seem like we have much to fill that role except hordes of termagants that would just die immediately.

Been using scout 9 serberys raiders, move 12 inch, with 2 unit skystalk deep strikes and Callidus assasin to move block and harass. This video helped man thanks.

And what if you play the adeptus mechanicus? They have no tanky units that can sit on the middle objective and brush everything off. They have no such unit at all. Even the robots will fold like paper.

I will say that the youtube algorithm pushed this video to me on multiple occasions, but I didn't click on it multiple times; I later found it after getting crushed again in a match today. I'm not sure what to make of that, but title and thumbnail are extremely important on youtube and I think this video could have had more reach if the title and thumbnail were different, but I don't know what an ideal title and thumbnail would be. I'd guess a lot of it getting pushed in the algorithm is from engagement in likes and comments and retention rather than clickthrough rate, which a different title and thumbnail might help with. Clickbait-y titles and thumbnails do work on youtube but this one just didn't work for me personally, I think because in the warhammer space the clickbait with no payoff game is played into so hard by so many channels. I was expecting the video to be much more surface level or trivial based on the title and thumbnail, like a list of mistakes not to make or something. It's really presenting a theory of how to play 40k, how to approach the game in abstract in a way that gets beyond basic rules interactions. As a beginner looking for content you will often find lots of stuff on literally how to play and basic rules interactions rather than theory on how to approach the game.

I suck at warhammer 40k for one very important reason.... I've never played it.

At the very least is good conceptual information to keep in mind. Especially that last part about where to deploy. If nothing is going to change where you deploy a apecific unit, then there is no strong reason to not deploy that unit as early as possible.

1st video of yours I've ever seen...liked and subscribed amazing content. Guard player here struggling to think of a good rapid ingress candidate. Straken plus catachan blob springs to mind but easy to screen out a 21+ man blob.
