I love how as a community we reduce our combat mechanics to "haha bonk lizard on the head" while in reality we are subconsciously or consciously playing a turn based combat puzzle where you have to know how to optimally trade attacks with a lizard
This is the MH content I've been waiting to be more readily available to ppl. Thanks for putting it out there. We need more to-the-point, analytical content like yours. I seriously think this is something a new player should be focusing on since day one IMO
Won't lie. Despite having about a thousand hours in SNS. Hearing this description made me think about how I use every single weapon in the game. Probably gonna go back to apply xD So thanks
As a long time player, i genuinely appreciate these more in-depth looks at the underlying systems and not just the surface info. Knowing how much damage you do is great, but if you can't hit that attack it's not that helpful. Thank you for doing these short dive videos about the more nuanced details of these games.
"i'm not associating a specific amount of time for topple punisher because monsters flail on the ground for different amount of time" that's the hardest part for the GS, learning the optimal punish for all types of topple of all monsters to not waste topple time in your tcs recovery, or miss your tcs because the monster recovered... because quite a few monsters do not stay on the ground for the same time based on if you wall banged them, leg break toppled them, or other types of topple such as hit stops to the head during attacks.
i find that doing arena quest and counting how many animation loop a monster does is usefull. like i know that rathalos does 7 head bob, Odogaton arm that is stuck under his head scatch 10 time. or if you can recorde gameplay , going into the replay and mesuring the topple time is good too
i usually just do the slinger shortcut into TCS. It is always fast enough, and even if i had more time, i'm not leaving that much damage on the table. Hell, if i'm positioned well and have piercing pods it might be more damage than the triple attack combo
@@lred1383 tcs has a long recovery, which makes it extremely slow to chain two tcs. and tcs only has a slightly higher total motion value than charged slash and strong charged slash together.
ive gotten fairly good at knowing when a monster is going to flinch/topple at a certain amount of damage but i never thought about counting time...this has been a rather informative video...thats why i love this game....there is always something new to learn...and i love learning so thanks for teaching me something i never knew i never knew🧐
completely agree, wish more weapon tutorials would cover which punishes are good for small / medium openings instead of just what combo to spam when the monsters down
I would also like to add that theres also the mechanic of starting your moves before the monster finishes their's. What may be a 1.5 opening could be as big as a 2 if its got a predictable or small hitbox that you can dodge while starting your next move.
As a hammer enjoyer and spending tons of time with it I use these moves 1.5s = charged upswing if need to gapclose or that lv 3 charged move without moving analog stick (i think its called charged brutal big bang) 3s= triple triangle combo that ends in that sick golf swing 5s= idk this one, I usually do triple triangle Topple punisher= if I have time then big bang combo (trick is to never power charge while monster is toppled and thrashing about as it wastes time, just do the uncharged big bang combo if your charge has run out) if I absolutely do not have any time, I just do the triple triangle and move away.
I'd love to see more on the Lance. I'm enjoying reading and countering the monster but when they topple I don't know if there's any fancy combo I can pull other than just the triple poke or some shield bashes to build KO damage
Most of the time (LR&HR mons) I don't use this mindset but after reaching MR (and get punished almost everytime by almost everything) I'm playing every hunt with "if confused guard/guard point" (especially big moves like Glavenus 3 hit tail slam)
Micheal! i have been trying to figure something out an i hope you can help me. SONIC BOMB! Beside diablos, Who else in MHW is affected by Sonic bomb ? i keep not using Huuuuuuunting horn with Sonicwave becase i have no clue if/when a monster can be affected by the SonicWave. is there a source somewhere that list all interaction? thanks
I know (at least in MHGU) if you use a sonic bomb on Nargacuga when it's in its ready-to-pounce stance it will flinch or something but then it will enrage. You can use this to your advantage with earplugs or block counters because it might roar 1 or 2 times while it enrages, but overall, it might be better to not enrage it. I think you can enrage Tigrex with sonic bombs as well
If you come from the fighting game community, this type of thinking is just embedded in your brain 😂, everything is even more predictable because you're fighting AI instead of actual people. You gotta learn your timings/recovery time/animation commitment etc. It's almost like learning frame data on fighting games but much more forgiving. No wonder I was always drawn to Charge Blade. I'd say playing and learning the slower weapons really forces you to learn the recovery time of all the monster's attacks. With faster weapons u can often times just wing it, it ain't optimal and might be somewhat slow depending on the weapon but it will get the job done
don't be afraid to use your sword. get evade extender cuz in world SA has the worst mobility in the game so you want more for sure. it's very satisfying when you combo those ZSDs tho
You can apply this mindset to any weapon. Study the the monsters attacks and figure out which attack animations you have the time for. With SA you have additional moves which lets you get out the way but also getting a hit in while doing it. Utilize those moves for shorter openings to squeeze in a little more damage
I know I'm good in Monster Hunter because I already had a concept of "rhythm" and synchronizing with the monster in order to never get hit I also noticed I can usually finish a 10 minute hunt without using a single potion, with cat's help of course
This is really unnecessary. You don't need to know the exact timing of your weapon attacks but just a rough idea. If you verse a monster with a specific weapon often then you will have a mental timing on what openings to exploit and how to exploit it. But I do like how you're applying fighting game logic to monster hunter, it makes your videos engaging to watch.
