GS main here, you are very correct in general, though I do love just tackle canceling through a lot of incoming attacks, and at that point I've also moved one step closer to a true charge slash (though a slightly lesser version, had I decided to run the full loop). Not a very reliable strat for beginners though. Either way good video and good info!

Go big, or go to tent on a cart. Usually the latter.

I have a theory that non-newcomers (so, someone interested and somewhat knowledgeable in the game) are so greedy with hits, because they've seen some speedrunner\veteran curb stomp a monster without using defence too much. So the player might think that they can get those flinches and trips in time, just like a speedrunner in that one cool vid. What they miss, is that a speedrunner has the best gear and also counters instead of just defending -- which is much trickier and requers extensive knowledge of the monster. But yeah, good advice on your part. Thanks for the video!

Trading is wasting future DPS. And yeah, forward roll has better range and back roll has extra lag.

I totally agree, but as a chargeblade player, these piles ain't gonna SAED themselves
@mrvolans7862

a quirk of the chargeblade is also that many combos have guardpoints that save you in case you were greeding that last savage axe hit and didn't morph slash to sword mode in time. It kind of enables a bit of greed, since getting those guard points feels cool as heck. 😂 I love charge blade.

SAED'ing is fine if you can guarantee the part flinch. Just count damage accumulated on part 👍

So this is ENTIRELY correct but doesn't apply too much to lance. I'm a lance main and the way that lance dashes work is that after one attack, your character will not turn if you dash in a direction really quickly after that. On top of that if you use a dash (no direction input) it will be a short dash back good for combo strings, but if you hold back when using a dash you travel 3x as far. So usually I do two stabs and then a short or long dash back depending on the situation. Only downside is that the long backdash is EXTREMELY punishable.

as a gunlance main I agree with you explanation wholeheartedly, I'm mostly defensive and I use my Full burst to deal decent true damage due to shells Ignoring defense when it benefits me but most of the time i just use guard thrust to whittle down the monster

This. I feel this. My biggest weakness with gunlance is overcoming the muscle memory of over 300 hours and not quick reload when I end up not having time to. I tend to over estimate how much time I have, and the worst fights happen when I know I can pretty flawlessly hunt a monster and start pushing my timings. BVVH is a great example. First hunt of the day was near flawless. The 10th? I was down to my last pot. Against harder fights or fights I don't know, 90% of my time is spent on the guard and poke rhythm, and then I work in more expensive attacks.

My only issue with this is the fighting game comparison. It's more like you use the longer start up moves more to punish, not a combo. If you hit the opponent, you ARE going to do the longest/strong combo you can, or one that leaves them in a bad situation. And there is a purpose in continuing to hit a sequence of attacks during a blocked hit. It's called a block string and usually it's meant to keep yourself safe by ending in a move that isn't punishable. However, the concept of "it's not your turn" applies to both, as well as the poking, positioning, and greeding/mashing buttons.

not any content at all regarding this and is the type of content i love to see for monster hunter, can’t wait for more! The game is viewed understandably very casually that any attempt searching online for tricks or monster attack patterns is simply beginner guides. perhaps i was just the dumb one since i would always trade badly with a monster, even when i did TA Wiki runs and always wondered why i wouldn’t be close to the record when i first played MHW years ago. (Though i attribute this to bad habits formed through using a meta set that rewards big damage for hits that have you chasing for greedy staggers) Embarrassingly enough i’ve learned to be more conscious of trade patterns very recently when i set a goal for LS acid glav arena solo, in addition to how crucial positioning is. Praying i can get that sub 5

I should mention for lance, if you decide to greed the 3rd hit, and you realize you've made a mistake, left trigger clutch claw guard is faster and doesn't get delayed as much by recovery frames

One of the greatest lessons I've ever learned as a GS main is to let go of the charge early from time to time. Some attacks _look_ like they might be able to squeeze in a charged slash but a lot of them are horribly effective bait. With those attacks, greeding for the charge won't just get you hit. I will also negate the damage you otherwise would have gotten by just swinging early. Greed is the biggest noob killer in Monster Hunter.

As a Hammer Main i dont have this problem, its hit and run all day long, combos are for flinches, exhausts and K.O.s... If the monster can respond then im hitting and running. One hit, one dodge repeat untill i fuck up or the monster dies

Yes but, I put on a rocksteady and keep pressing Y and X until monster is down or I run out of potions. What do you say to that. Mr. DODGE IT ALL. I am both the unstoppable force and the immovable object!!!
