asking questions like “what EQ does my snare need” is maybe a complicated way to think about this kind of problem - another approach is to ask “who is playing low mids? who is playing sub bass? who is on presence?” like you’re building a team. if some instrument is already taking the sub bass responsibility, then you know your kick doesn’t need to be sub-heavy, etc. if nobody is playing “presence”, you need to assign an instrument to that role. this also works for “who is in the front/who is in the back”, “who is left/right/middle”.

Playing with the EQs has helped me a lot, especially with the snares. I love boosting the low end of the snare, I find it brings some nice warmth to the drum pattern.

- It's probably worth explaining to viewers that the 808 sounds you're talking about ARE kick sounds. They're just being used as a bass alongside another kick. The 808 is a drum machine after all. - One of the most important mixing lessons I learned: Cut, don't boost. When you boost, you're raising the noise floor on the track as well. You're also raising the overall volume of your mix, which you'll just end up counteracting later to avoid clipping. If you cut the other frequencies instead with shelves or bandpasses instead and only boost sparingly, you'll end up with a much cleaner, clearer mix that gives you more control.
@mdptg1990
@mdptg1990 Год назад
That’d be ideal but in many cases as a sample based producer you have to boost samples just to make it work. But what helps is adding another EQ onto the boosted sample

Another great fix is layering samples with more stuff in the area it's lacking! And if you have lots of subby kicks that don't have much use, consider maybe making something DJ Premier-y that's really minimal in terms of basslines but has tons of low-end in drums

Also the point demonstrated with two kicks, this is exactly why I usually load up to 5 different kicks up to be ready, just to switch between them and check which is best in context

Most samples from kits are EQed to with each other but need some adjustments when working with other samples. Instead of turning a sample or drum up turn the eq up in one frequency. This is why u want start mixing with some headroom, like -12, it won't stay that low but then when u start doing additive EQ you have room to turn it up.
