In this video, we look at what I consider the most important aspects of a good street photograph!
I believe this to be the most important aspect of a good street photograph. Very often we are drawn to capturing nicely lit scenes, nice shapes or just a pretty place. But why is that scene interesting?? and when I say interesting I don’t mean to just you. You might think that photograph has some interest to it but what about somebody who isn’t into photography or wasn’t there when you took the photograph would they see it as an interesting photograph?
Whether you are photographing a charismatic person, a nicely lit scene or a comedic moment, The image will have to display a very clear and obvious element of interest for the viewer otherwise it will be dismissed and your perceived standard will lower.
When reviewing your images, try and work out which ones you like the best and what elements of the images you are most drawn to. Is this scene interesting? - if so why? if not why?
All of the images I have selected for my recent blog post needed to display a clear element of interest which is obvious to the viewer
It should always be very obvious to the person looking at your photographs what your intention was as the photographer and what they should be immediately drawn to.

I actually think the photo of the guy on his phone is really good. I also like that he is looking at his phone and not directly at the camera because it makes it more real and a sign of the times.

You are very brave Gareth !. Sharing the photos that have not worked (we usually hide it) and explaining why they are not good enough is a great lesson for the community. Bravo!

Really love the lady walking down the stairs. She is fascinating. Those with lights and shadows are extremely interesting with all the different tones, so don't delete those. The two walking on the sidewalk with the arrows on the wall have no leading space, but the arrows are cool. I think you really drove the message home on making it interesting. This is like having a Master Class online!

These are valuable tips for photography generally. I often take the shot without thinking about it and might have missed it if I did, but I know where you're coming from. Must try harder. Also, on any day out walking the streets of London, I find my photography will vary from street to fine art to documentary to architectural, it shouldn't really matter if one merges in to another imo. Shoot what makes you happy, as someone once said.

Interesting to watch, like lots of things in life it’s subjective who likes what too I think. Personally I find it depends on my mood 😁 As you said at the start, you can probably tell within half a second if you like something or not though!... 👍📸

I can only second the previous comments. Not every image depicted as „Street Photography“ is interesting, however the majority of what you’ve shared in this video definitely is :) The guy in the bus for instance and the people following the arrows are amazing

Another interesting video and plenty to think about mate. Totally agree with the need to be self critical with your own work and as you mention not always easy to do as we all have an emotional attachment to our own work. I find it easier if I leave the post processing for a few weeks this can make me question why I took the image in the first place. I can see where you are coming from with the half second guideline but im not sure if I'm totally in agreement with that haven't we all had images that at first glance we thought are duffers vut given a while longer have turned out to be some of our favourites and vice versa. I know with some of my images that I had thought to be excellent at first glance but after living with them for a while they turn out to be a bit meh... Mind you I could say that about a lot of my stuff. :-)

The image of the guy smoking... If it was in B&W and given a bit of a ‘moody’ edit could be very good. A kind of cinematic look... If get what I'm getting at.

Many thanks Gareth, very frank and certainly interesting, did not agree with all your comments , but did agree with your rationale -! One small observation , Are you too wound up about definitions? By that I mean several times you refferred to..”is this street…or is it documentary” or “ I suppose people might find the guy on the bus with mask interesting in the future…but not now” when I look at urban photos from the past some of the well crafted ones are good and timeless, but some of the the best and most interesting tell me a story of that time or show me a lifestyle that has gone…”. By all means reject photos as crap now…but don’t throw "all "of them away, maybe ? F8 is great , plan to resubscribe to next 4. Best wishes

this is a great topic wondering if you have or maybe could do one about choosing between color and black and white? I feel color is so complex between the style of going more saturation or desaturation like the fuji classic chrome, then many more. Then comparing those to black and white and sometimes feeling that black and white is just better sadly to me.

The ones you find boring are the ones I like. Take the guy smoking, for example. Lots of us want to people watch, and if you look at the guy, it makes you think. What is he thinking about? What does he do for a living? What music does he like? I don’t believe that everybody needs to be doing something specific to make a photograph enjoyable.

its very subjective but some photo you can just feel somethings off or missing. the thing is to find that "something". The geometry photo you took could work cropped but the guys head falls into two areas. personally I think he needs to be in the light
@sanjayp2683
@sanjayp2683 3 года назад
Alot of this is subjective. There isn't a right or wrong in photography. You can say you're not happy with photos because you intended to take it with a different composition, fine. But it's unfair to say they suck. Just because the masses may like a certain style, does not mean that a photo sucks because it doesn't conform.
@GarethDanks
@GarethDanks 3 года назад
Respectfully disagree mate. A poor subject or composition is always gonna suck. If the viewer thinks otherwise it just means they have a lower standard to you. To get better you need to be able to critique your work. And accept when something is poor to YOU! No image is perfect. There’s always a way to improve, that’s the joy.. being able to see weaknesses is vital. Accepting lower standards means you won’t grow as an artist. Imo. 😊👍🏻

Strange but when you look back on your own images and tell other people what you like it does not always mean that other people dont like those images too, for instance I liked the picture of the person on the bike coming through the underpass or tunnel and yet you did not, just a example of course but you did have some very interesting images there, I have a almost identical one of the red lanterns taken in China town the last time I was in London, thank you for all the hints and tips they were all useful for when we can get out again! I think the word you was looking for was visual impact.....

Along the same lines, he liked the woman in the red outfit sitting on the steps of a museum, but for me that was like what he described earlier in the video as a picture of someone simply sitting there, and for me it wasn't all that interesting. A lot of street photography is subjective.
@GarethDanks

Hey Des mate, thanks for the comment buddy! yeah i guess im too hard on my images.. but i do want to start strict and gain a high standard collection.. so looking for weakness is my way of growing.. i feel my images need to be 80% for me to consider them worth while.. that bike image seems to be lacking far too much for me.. thanks mate
