I am a boring guy. I can find endless pleasure in reading the paper edition of the Wall Street Journal with a cup of coffee. I mean all the pages, not just the charts and financials. An 8-year-old girl came over to my table at Panera Bread while I was totally engrossed in my daily read of the WSJ. I went to sip my coffee and saw her sitting next to me. I was shocked. Never having kids I did not know they did this kind of thing. I said hi, I am Buzz who are you? I am Alice...what are you doing she said? I am reading the WSJ a Newspaper I replied. She said, I have never seen someone reading a big paper like this before. Is it fun? I told her, for me it was very fun. I asked where her parents were. Right there in the booth there. But, they only watch their phones and pads. They don't talk to each other or me most of the time. Then she said: can I just watch you read the newspaper? Instead I showed her why I read Printed newspapers not digital. Then showed her how to read one. I gave her a piece to read and in a moment she was off reading. And asking lots of questions. 10 minutes go by, her Mom comes over, in a huff, saying: What are you doing here? Giving me a glaring look. Alice told her, I have been here 10 min and you only noticed me now! That only got the Mom angrier and louder. Alice explained how she was learning how to read a real newspaper. Looking at me I explained the tactile feel of paper and its relationship to enjoying the read which is not given by an electronic thing. The mom listened, calmed down. Told me how her grandfather said the same thing. I am old. You don't have to do something to enjoy. You just have to know what you enjoy doing to make you happy. Happy Trails

hi u! Thanks so much for leaving this comment, it resonated with me a lot! I am with you my friend. I miss real books and real newspapers. And I've survived off the Kindle Paper White for many years now cos i'm nomadic and always travelling for the past decade, but now that we've finally settled down again in Bali I am again purchasing real books and actually bringing my old favourites across from Singapore and totally enjoying just lying in the garden, holding the book, reading it page by actual page. I'm so tired of digital screens pervading our lives and also i worry about how all these flashing short form content makes all of us have the attention span of a gnat. There was always the comics section of the paper which i loved! Calvin & Hobss! Garfield! The greats!

People are bored because they don't challenge themselves. I realised years ago that when I get too comfortable I effectively live groundhog day and become a zombie and start getting really restless. And so when I was too comfortable in my career I decided to do something totally different, I was too comfortable in my country so I recently moved to another one on the other side of the world, etc etc. If you stay still and do the same thing for too long a period you effectively die inside.

This completely resonated as well, although you sound very brave and courageous to flip your entire life around and move to the other side of the world in what sounds like a jiffy once u decided you're too comfortable. but yes. Most of us in that urban dwelling life with corporate jobs will be stuck in Groundhog Day for 30-40 years if we don't pay attention. many won't hv the option of uprooting and flipping things around completely, but in the little scattered chunks of time they have they must be doing something meaningful still, prob on a smaller scale, but they shouldn't let Tik Toks just suck their life away!

Thanks for your insight Jean. I've been following you and other RU-vidrs who have left their comfortable, yet frenetic jobs to live more simply. Well, a month ago I moved to Thailand and left Emergency medicine behind me. After working endless hours through the "Covid Pandemic", I am now living in a small beachfront bungalow on a tiny quiet island. Boring is nice! But, being a very high energy person, I have been using this extra time to use my new environment for fitness and reading. Currently fortifying my trading skills, along with daily runs and swims in this tropical paradise.

hi! thanks for leaving this note and sharing about your own brave journey! I salute your courage to change your life around completely as well. I imagine havin worked the ER for the last 2 years must have taken a lot out of you and the peace and quiet of your life now in Thailand sounds wonderful and I'm very glad for you. In this initial stage you're still in vacay and recovery mode i expect, but you'll slowly find stuff to fill your days with in this new life. Every day here in Bali we are busy - as i type now i'm realising i forgot to cook dinner for my 3 furkids today oops haha.. but yeah fitness and reading is a great start. I also did some swing and day trading back in my early years but i found overall that longer term holding is much more up my alley. Enjoy your life hey! every day is a beautiful day!

So much truth! I’ve learned to spend my free time writing/drawing/learning so that I can eventually get where I want to be. I miss real connections. I know so many people that fell into the Netflix rut during lockdowns (and that was their way of coping and that’s fine) but they haven’t gotten out of it. I’m having a hard time reconnecting with people when so many just want to watch a movie at home when I miss the vibrancy of life.

hey Steph! thanks for sharing! Its such a coincidence but in the week just past, instead of meditating and taking it slow in the mornings i'm mixing it up by drawing a quick portrait sketch instead and i'm loving the change in routine so far plus it lets me finally get in more art time in my week cos i've really fallen behind recently. I miss real connections too. Netflix really has changed all our lives so much.

there are times where i tell myself to "embrace boredom". What is boring to someone may be meaningful to me- for example taking a 1.5hr walk daily, sounds boring to many, but its meaningful to me as thoughts gather and form during these 1.5hrs, and the greenery around just makes me feel good after that.
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
i love this note from you, thanks so much for sharing. Totally echo your sentiment. The video was a reflection of my past life back in SG when i was still a corporate rat. Now i live my boring life in Bali doing walks in nature and chillin w dogs n stuff and it totally sounds lame to describe it to people but my everyday is meaningful to me!
@MrThejboe3oh5
@MrThejboe3oh5 Месяц назад
Yes, however, that is the focal point. How did walking for 1.5 hours become a form of entertainment because you are out of options? And post-walk, what follows? Your residence and automobile are pristine, and the laundry is completed. You have traversed, engaged in revelry, undertaken audacious ventures, encountered adversity, lived transiently under a bridge and subsequently strived diligently to extricate yourself from that predicament to attain prosperity. You have pursued education, sculpted your physique, initiated and divested a business, owned a high-performance vehicle, undertaken DIY projects, honed your culinary skills, and evidently achieved every ambition. I'll even throw in becoming a paraplegic and achieving much of this in a chair, yet what comes next? I sincerely believe things have become excessively facile, and the gratification derived from accomplishing tasks has dwindled. In the past, navigating using maps and intellect and experiencing a sense of achievement or becoming immersed in a library to acquire knowledge, thereby finding the attainment of an "A" extremely fulfilling, all necessitated considerable effort. Presently, it seems feasible to execute tasks with minimal exertion; everything is at your fingertips.

I was once a corporate lawyer too and made myself believe that my contribution to the company is immeasurable and the law department would cease to exist if I quit one day. I think the first step we need to do is to acknowledge that our life is not an accident. That there is a creator God behind all these. Just like anything else on earth, humans are part of God's wonderful creation. And our meaning in life is derived from understanding why God created humans in the first place. Just like we can't ask a pencil, "hey pencil, what is the purpose of your existence". The purpose of a pencil is given by its creator - us. Humans made a pencil to write. So in short, to find FOUNDATIONAL and DEFINITIVE meaning for our lives, we have to know our creator God. I am a Christian, the very first two chapters of Genesis, which is the first book of the Bible, gives us the very essential information we need to explain human beings' existence :) I encourage all of us to read it! Incidentally, Genesis means 'the origin'! I am still working. Work is still taking a lot of time out of me. Instead of finding my work cumbersome or a chore, I actually find my work utterly meaningful and purposeful because I understand the meaning and purpose of 'work' within the grand narrative of what it means to be a human. God has given me wonderful talents and giftings to contribute to the world, to serving my fellow human beings and making a difference in the world we live in. What an awesome privilege to be a human!

But its a very important message I wanted to put out there. I was also feeling trapped by that boring life routine cos the 9-5 really locks you into a way of life that offers very little options with the scattered bits of free time that we have and the exhaustion you feel after work. One of the best things i did back in the day was signing up for oil painting classes at Studio Miu every Sunday morning at 9am at Takashimaya. It was exhausting to get there from Pasir Ris by 9am cos usually i work Sats too in the office. But that 3 hours class every Sunday morning made so much difference in my mental state. i hope this vid makes a difference to all those still in the race lah hehe. I feel lucky that our life in Bali is pretty hermit and basically my introvert's heaven and i can read real books and run around minus the phone cos my hubs will take care of the tech side of things generally lol. Real life (a lot of it anyway) is happening outside of that digital screen.

@@JeanVoronkova Indeed. I mean how much time people spend on looking at the superficial life of other people on FB (many of them are looking for likes, showboating anyway). It's totally unfruitful. The ranking system in office (politics etc) is also a huge hindrance in cultivating our mind too. That's why I rather trade full time than go for a standard office job. I want my mind to be free (not in the American sense though lol).

But isn't life meaningless? Then it's ok to waste my life away on my bed watching netflix right?
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
we all have to make our own choices! but just having Netflix marathons in particular leaves me very very restless and unfulfilled!!! I know this feeling because i have succumbed to it several times! Like when Bridgerton was out haha. We create our own meaning in life with our choices of action and activities. Recently I started quick portrait sketching in the mornings and that's made me really feel accomplished even before my first 2 hours of the day has passed.

No worries it’s just creative differences, I liked the vignette effect bringing attention to the bored expression on my face - plus I’m no expert it’s just me fingers on Snapseed going crazy haha
