I had it for decades. I have always been a gym rat too. Thick pecs, thick arms but protruding belly. It turned out my lower ab muscles were weak. I had to change my training. I do daily ab exercises. Now I got flat stomatch after a year of training. Vacuums, front squats, leg raises, reverse sit-ups helped me the most.
I think you have hit the nail in the head I love how the correct answer has the lowest number of likes. This is the right answer for most people. But it's too much work.
44 yrs old, always trained though switched to more cardio in the last decade. In my mind, i know that i have been doing less with ab exercise, just generally. It shows around my stomach and looks odd compared to the rest of my physique. Pilates (matt based) is great for this - especially vacums, and the exercises you mentioned above are what i will incorporate more into my resistance training again. Thanks for the reminder!
@@MagusKali Aside from goblet and front squats it was all bodyweight. I end my workouts with ab supersets, 3x15 each. Frequency is the key. On my off days I utilize environment. I do vacuums while I am in metro train. I do knee raises using table and office chair. I do russian twists and windmills in the bed before sleeping. Basically its a pelvic tilt problem. There is also father of all ab sexercises but it takes 2 people to do.. eheheh..
For me, I was very skinny with a fat belly. I thought it was just a part of getting older. Actually, it turns out I had SIBO and a very severe microbacterial imbalance in my gut. Got a very detailed test that showed me the levels of good and bad gut bacteria such as H.Pylori, and even though I thought I was eating healthy, my scores were all very bad. So I needed to get very specific microbacteria and diet changes to specifically target overgrowing strains. After 3 months of treatment, my belly was flat as a pancake. Also, my gas, indigestion, and stomach pains went away too. If you're thin and have a belly, get this checked with gut bacteria diversity test panel. It's very much worth every penny.
Thanks for the suggestion. I noticed that my belly seems to be bloated at times. I will start watching out to see if I can figure out what caused the bloating.
I have noticed my belly changed after I started doing yoga more frequently. I think the poses from yoga might be helping me with this. Even though I was already skinny before, it's like the shape of my belly is different. This video is helping me understand it.
@@Cashcash69 hi! I got started with the RU-vid channel Yoga with Adrienne. She has calendars that are very easy to follow. It is not the best for losing fat though!! Have this in mind! In my case, it changed how my stomach looked like in ways that strength training didn't. Her videos are beginner friendly and are a great way to start. After some months (or maybe years) learning these poses you could try ashtanga yoga. But i don't recommend getting started with ashtanga! If you don't know what you are doing you will damage your body in serious ways. It is more advanced, so build the basics first. Right now I stopped doing strength training and cardio because ashtanga yoga has made my body more beautiful (in my own perspective) and I actually feel stronger than before when I was doing gym workouts. I hope this helps!! Good luck.
When I was a teen a read a book about breathing written by a women who was very inspired by buddhist teachings. She taught me the right way to breathe was into the soft, unstressed belly and avoid the hard, stressed rib breathing. Rib breathing was harmful, she stated quite clearly. It was the cause of stress and multiple ailments, she wrote. I remember thinking "huh, I breathe into my ribs a lot. Better try not to." I practiced avoiding "rib breathing" over the years and now I'm a skinny guy with a soft, rounded belly. Thought I just got hit by bad genetics. Now I'll experiment with Conors method of breathing over the next months. If it works I'll celebrate by burning an album with hippie music and write a letter to the author of that book telling her not to disseminate anatomy taught by people living in medieval monasteries.
I did this exact thing and am in the same situation you describe, but was instructed to by a "yoga master". I've been *afraid* to breathe using my lungs and believed this BS until today!! :
From what I know, full belly breathing is just a preparation to learn the "complete breathing" technique. I learned about it from a yoga teacher, but never quite got the handle of it, so I have been doing belly breathing for years because I love the feeling of having lots of air in my lungs. After I tried this video's exercise, I think I finally got it. The basics are the same (fill up your chest on inhale and contract your belly on exhale). The trick is not to expand your belly too much and focus more on your chest area. It's a lot harder than relying solely on your belly, so I think that's the reason why some people never learn complete breathing. I'm still struggling myself, but I'd rather breathe using my belly than feel asphyxiated breathing like most people.
I'm confused. At 0:40, you talk about the pelvis expanding and contracting during inhalation. That isn't possible. The pelvic bones are connected to the sacrum of the spine at the sacroiliac joint by tough ligaments. The pelvic bones also connect to each other by the pubic symphysis, which is also tough and largely immovable. The sacroiliac joint and pubic symphysis absorb impact (e.g. from jumping), but don't flex for breathing. In fact, the pelvis expands in special circumstances, like pregnancy, where the hormone relaxin causes ligaments to become loose to enable childbirth through a widened pelvis. In summary, the pelvic floor muscles do cooperate with breathing, but the bones do not. Also, at 2:22, you talk about having your client exhale beyond what he normally would. It isn't normal for people to regularly exhale beyond tidal volume (normal breathing). I think the whole point of this video is that people with protruding bellies aren't in the habit of forcefully and fully exhaling. But that's pathologizing what is normal biomechanics. Anyone who fully exhales will look thinner. What's probably more helpful is building transversus abdominis strength to reduce waist circumference. In summary, I think you're slightly addressing the topic, but 1. mention incorrect facts and 2. do so by proposing the incorrect reasoning. It's honestly frustrating to see misinformation get so much attention and praise.
Yh, that’s also what I was wondering, there was no source of his information provided and also I have never heard of the pelvis expanding especially in breathing
Agree 100% we're not supposed to exhale as much we normally inhale and obviously forced exhale will make the internal costal muscles and abdominal muscles to contract which will give the skinny look.
I'm glad I read the comments. I'm about 100 pounds into my weight loss and my protruding belly is still bothering me. I think I'll stick to my daily planks and ab bridges.
"Normal biomechanics" can lead to many problems when they aren't so normal. Think pigeon toes, mouth breathing and shallow breathing, and slouched posture. All can be corrected with conscious effort.
Abdominal obesity. Anterior pelvic tilt. IBS type symptoms such as what you’ve mentioned. Genetics, you name it. That being said I do strongly recommend that if you have this issue and it makes you self-conscious. Consider working on exercises that strengthen your core stomach upper back and your butt so it will help you with your posture and not make it look as extreme. Eating well is good for everybody. That means working on your gut health and eating fermented foods and or whatever helps your particular body. That’s going to vary from person to person. Really working on aligning your entire posture not just parts of it. Your lower back with your mid back with your upper back with your shoulders with your neck with your head all the way up from the top of your head to the end of your tailbone. Figuring out what the most natural position is but would also of the most proper is is a bit of a challenge but it will help. I would say that mewing and trying to fix my chin is one of the reasons it put me on this journey as well as being tired of looking pregnant and having a Pelvic tilt. I gained weight and that just made the entire thing look worse. I’m getting back in the gym and I’m getting stronger now and it’s getting better. I also got an inversion table which I do think is helping me decompress my spine and let my back straightened out.
This might be what I suffer from. I can literally hear the gas moving around in my stomach when I lay down. No matter how I exercise and diet the weight comes off my chest, butt and thighs but my belly stays the same
Pelvic is most underrated from doctors and people to be in general, it can effect many things in our bodies that traditional medicine can’t fix, in my case for example as a make it effected my knees,+sciatica and prostates gland
It’s crazy I’m seeing this .. I’ve been working on my posture and I’ve been having PAINFUL gas and I knew it had something to do with changing my posture but this made it make sense!!! Thank you ❤
I've never been skinny but throughout my youth I've been more toned because I played sport, but even when I was the most fit, only the bottom of my belly stayed the same. And I swear by it when I meant that I was fit, I played volleyball and basketball competitively for years as well as other sport activities on off-seasons (running, ultimate, and even the gym) but despite being fit I could never get rid of that small flab of fat. This might be the reason why. I wish I found this sooner so I could start earlier but its better now then later. If I remember to come back here I'll make sure to give an update! Thanks so much for such an informative video!
Connor, you are the best out there! Thank you so much for all your detailed videos and helping all of us to have good posture to move and breathe which affects our quality of life.
omg exactly! Literally have been trying to tell my pt that my pelvis is off and that's causing me to not breathe well. Thanks for all the info on your channel, you're like, the pelvis whisperer 😂😂
whoa man this is imperative information, I spent many years as a youth sitting in a desk facing the wall in a private 'school' with very little movement during the day, and very lack luster gym classes. I don't breathe well and my pelvis is seized up. This is great. I didn't even know my pelvis is supposed to open and close when I breathe so thanks. I get it. I'm still frozen from years of staying still and trying to be small and not attract attention to try to avoid abuse and stay safe. The only time I feel better is when I play drums to the point of being out of breath, or after singing a set list of songs, I'm a musician, wich shows me that I'm not breathing default very well at all. deep squats with deep breathing +++
I feel more bloated lately and I noticed my "pouch" belly seemed to increase. I thought it might be the effect of oncoming menopause but when I saw your video, I started thinking maybe I have air inside my abdomen that can't get out. I really want to try your techniques in inverted pose & breathing, but how or where should I start.
@@conorharris how Am I supposed to breath while doing belly vacuum ? After my belly is sucked in and I’m supposed to go into apnea or keep on breathing ? I feel pressured my pelvic floor when I releasing my belly vacuum.
Here are some other reasons: 1. Lactose intolerance, can make you feel bloated. Try taking lactase enzyme. You can find it at local pharmacy. I lost some inches from that. 2. You have a gluten allergy, this can also make you bloated and add inches, consult with your doctor. 3. That’s how your body naturally stores fat. No shame about it, many people have the same issue. Time to hit the gym.
I definitely have a protruding belly/anterior pelvic tilt. I notice that when I bike or jog, my breathing takes place from like, 60% to 90% capacity. When I recognize this, I try and exhail slower and deeper to something like 10% capacity, but takes a lot of effort to do that and it is not comfortable. So basically, I'm always at that top of my breath.. Hope that makes sense, but now I'm wondering if this is the case for everyone?
Oh my god thank you so much!!!! I was having this pain and pressure feeling on my bladder out of absolutely no where and I knew it wasn’t a UTI. My belly was also protruding far more than normal. This helped relieve so much pressure with just a few tries.
Intermittent fasting reduces the water, air and bacteria build up in the stomach. Try skipping 1 x dinner per week then 2. Increase to all day fasting as you get more confident.
i always thought i am bloated and i have fat on my belly. this started when i started sitting jobs. i later discovered that this is not fat problem but posture. things they should teach in school cuz they care about us so much. but no.... you need to find useful things yourself and get help on youtube. thank you for sharing your knowledge man
About 35 years of my odd shaped belly, since as a teen I felt it stuck out then sub consciously I suck in all the time. Reckon I've been chest breathing since then 😳 Will take a look at your website 👌👌
I was at a healthy weight range when i was a kid but my stomach looked big, like i was pregnant. Little did i know that i was gluten and lactose intolerant, i also had IBS and constantly bloated. My Nans belly is big but no matter how little she ate, she would get bigger and bigger until she went to the hospital and was diagnosed with ulcerative collitis. My mum also had a protruding stomach, but she found out that she had a hernia.
Really interesting video! When I lose body fat it always comes off anything but my protruding belly, and i know I have a tendency to inhale longer than I exhale too
This is interesting. I’ve been working on my anterior pelvic tilt for a few years now, but I had no idea that it had to do with why my stomach might be bulging forward. Another thing to work on for another reason.
I'm listening connor this sounds interesting you may be reviewing symptomatics , but no condition as you said , liver, heart.ect I am dealing with the symptoms as you have expressed good insight thanks.
Hey Connor! I am so happy and hopeful because I found your channel. I have been dealing with long COVID for almost a year which resulted in inflamation from chronic contractures to get worse, caused by compressed discs in all Cs and L4-L5, L5-S1. I would love to know if you give consultation online, I'm in Costa Rica (impossible to fly to the States for now, where I am assuming you are) but many of the topics you mention in your videos I know I need help with. Sadly, none of these are being covered in my pelvic floor/physio therapies... thanks a lot for sharing the content with all of us, and hope tp hear from you :)!!!
Omfg this might be the video I have been looking for years. I have 10% body fat at 145 lbs and I have a protruding belly, I run, do ab workouts whenever I am at the gym and just couldn't fix my belly. Made no sense to me and was confused how much more I could diet. You just might have given me hope.
I have the same problem I'm skinny but I have a protruding belly after I eat something it sits so far out. I could eat something very small in my stomach will just bloat. I don't drink alcohol I do drink coffee from time to time but mostly I don't eat any junk food but it's like I have the alien bellies from Men In Black.
I’m not skinny my bmi is obese but I been taking ibgard and it helps with my stomach swelling I can see my feet now so I feel skinny without my stomach sticking out so much I don’t feel as fat
I have had this before and been super lean everywhere else. If I train abs everyday my stomach looks so much different. I have been bodybuilding for a long time and I really do think training abs daily is one of these best things as blood flow to the area encourages the fat to go from there even though they say its global fat loss. I have actually done the experiment a few times not training abs on a cut and look bloated and podgy but the second I do just 100crunches daily the abs tighten up loads and I start to see veins in the abs.
I work out 6x a week I’m very lean but I have a protruding belly. So is this the solutions? Work out Abs everyday and your stomach will flatten? (Assuming you’re low bf %)
Scrolling through and I see this thumbnail and title.. it’s because the transverse abdominis muscles are untrained.. I am only making that connection because I am currently training mine Thank you for your content!
I used to have a pretty decently strong abdominal area, but after not doing much exercise for a while, I noticed that I started to have a lot of gas build up in my stomach area.
My stomach sticks out massively and yes I look pregnant. But I can't do what you are saying in your video. I can't tilt my pelvis, side to side but not back and forth. (I wasn't aware of this until today) is there something else I can try?
Another thing that can happen is the ab muscles get weak and let the gut push them out. Strengthening your abs will pull them back into shape, or if you do have some fat on your belly it will make it appear smaller.
I have recently got tummy rolls and loose skin on sides of my stomach even tho i am skinny my ribs feel a little off too. I feel like my whole tummy area has changed it was not like this before.
I sometimes can exhale properly but most of the time I struggle to exhale regardless of how hard I try, I can't stay relaxed and my neck gets too active.
Yeah I’m small and I work out strategically and eat clean especially since my daughter I cannot fix my pelvis and look of my tummy 😩 this makes sense I’m definitely going to work on the breathing takes at for now
I have anterior pelvic tilt and a protruding belly. I can tell it's not just fat because I can grab fat rolls but I can't grab this bloated belly. My abdomen became distended after my c-section because air gets trapped, and I passed a lot of it out (as expected), but not all of it. I wonder if omeprazole would help, because that's what they gave my while I was in the hospital. Any tips?
I have a anterior pelvic tilt!!! But I unfortunately feel it’s due to my hypertension in my knees. And trying the exercises in the video def feels like my core is engaged and there’s a change in my length (due to my hypertension ). Should I feel like I’m doing a constant plank ?
Some people should get tested and consider that they may have a fatty liver giving this look as a sure sign of Type 1 diabetes or a pre curser leading to it, mainly due to the frequent eating and carbohydrate diet.
This would be great to see with some internal scanning of the body and then processed in a 3d cgi video that is clear and concise to the organs and how the move.
Hello @Conor Harris, For years now, I have been dealing with "stomach issues." Mainly the fact that when "pooch" my stomach out, I can hear what sounds like liquid and air in my stomach. Sometimes there is so much "liquid and air" that it makes me a little nauseous. What could be the cause?
I had the same thing. Went to see a doctor. Gastric outlet obstruction. Lots of air in my stomach and made it hard for me to digest foods and then liquids. Would hear slushing called Succussion Splash. I would suggest seeing a Gastroenterologist to run some test or ask for more information about it.
You literally explained my life’s problems but doctors don’t seem to understand how critically this issue can affect someone’s entire daily life. Who are you?
I’ve been on bedrest for 6 months & I felt I have bad belly fat. But now I’am allowed to start walking to the bathroom to empty my bladder & bowels. 😳 I have IBS too but I’am shocked how much wind is coming out whilst passing very loose stools. Can trapped wind look like lower belly fat too? I can’t believe how much wind has come out in 20 steps. I’am thankful though 🙏🏼
Thank you for this great video! I'm about to try this out but I don't think I'm fully understood how to.... Every diet I went through worked out on every area of my body but ab which makes me look a like ET from the movie. I recalled why and when big belly happened is when I used to work as dental assistant that required slouchy posture position pretty much all day... so I started extreme diets to get rid off. And I was told my ab is with not visceral fat, looks like a balloon with lots of air.... One distinctive symptom I gained along with big belly is chest pain while I sleep. my sleep position is back sleeping and the pain starts certain hours later. It starts on back and goes to chest so can't sleep no longer. from the research I found out that is related with slouchy and sitting position.
Or maybe, instead of talking about weird theories, you could just say that a person can have 1 of the three more common causes: 1- bloating- your intestines have gas and that's the reason your belly is bigger. 2- visceral fat - it takes space and makes belly bigger. Some people store more fat in the abdomen than in the usual visible places of the body. 3- weak transversus abdominis - the abdominal muscle that wraps around your belly. It might be lax and thus your belly protrudes. Haven't heard bullshit this bad in a while, i'll be damned.
thanks for the video. quick tip. looks like you've recorded your video and audio at different frame rates so the dialogue is going out of time with the video
I am lean with a tiny waist, but my lower abs stick out... it looks very idd to me. There is a small amount of fat on my lower abdomen but I can see and feel that the fat is not the cause. The protrusion comes from underneath the fat. From under the muscle...And its just the lower part of my belly. I also feel like i cant breathe sometimes... like im holding my breath without meaning to
It's just anterior pelvic tilt. It might be gas but has nothing to do with breathing. If you breathe correctly you breathe into your abdomen. It's probably muscle imbalances that shift the pelvis into this forward leaning position which results in a belly. Tight lower back and weak abdominal muscles to be exact.
help im so skinny and I have a belly thingy and when I press down I feel like a cage and I tried this and it felt like something was opening and it was hurting and it still hurts a bit can someone help this is my biggest security and I try workouts nothing works only if I tuck in help
