Great analysis. I am an engineer and can do math, in this case geometry, in my sleep, and I applaud your understanding and your ability to explain it! May your hotrod always go straight!
@@justinshearer3016 i was the same way, never paid attention to match in school, then comes racing and off road chassis building and suspension setup, sh1t now i need math.
@@nolansalas671 mine was, Why would I ever need math being a manager? then came having to do payroll, profit/loss analysis. yup should of paid attention in math.. but then I big brained it and made scripts to do everything for me. 😉
@Vintage ATV & CYCLE well geez I’m not Chief but I run a pontiac race car as well and I could sure use some free labor designing a tube chassis for the new car! I’m building it in secret with the same engine only aluminum with a lot more displacement. Cars will otherwise be IDENTICAL. Plan is to quietly bring the new car to the scene with “a new tuneup” and get to chopping heads off lol. That’s why (one of the reasons) I love pontiac lol all the engines are the same physical dimensions and when I tell ppl “it’s just little pontiac” it’s no cause for concern lol it gets ZERO respect 😂🤣🤣 and the og is FAR from slow (never been on dyno but it SHOULD make close to 500hp on the built stroker on motor alone and it has 2 2 stage nitrous kits that again in theory should ADD over a grand to it) the street won’t hold it on 29.5x10.5 and I haven’t run it at a track but not pressing either buttons and only running the kits controlled by the progressive she’s run just over 120(analog gauges) in the 1/4 on 29.5x10.5 MT drag radial slicks with water burnout launching off a concrete “bridge” that turns to asphalt maybe 100 ft out and doesn’t have to be trailered to the spot. Few gallons of 93 pump gas with some octane booster to drive there and one gallon of Sunoco 112 added to the main fuel cell and half gallon added to the small (think it only holds 2 gallons maybe one idk was bought used) cell that’s specifically for the nitrous kit that is injected directly into the intake. Back yard billy rigged set up for sure but she’s taken a few victims that I KNOW have 40k just in the chassis and 10k just on the turbo set up. She run damn good for an el cheapo budget build. Can’t wait to get the new car built and running with a real engine!
Hey Chief go to home depot and buy 4 RYOBI Multi Surface Laser Level. This is what we use to keep the rear wheel frame and front wheel inline on Harleys. On my son’s Pinto I used the same 4 lasers to aline his small block, 9 inch rear and 4 link. We measured between the shock towers, 2 lower fender bolts, rocker panels pinch seem and the trunk and floor seems. Shot the laser down the middle, to a-line the wheels, front wheels straight measuring from Center cord to center cord on the tires, set the lasers on the floor up against the rear tires and Measure the difference between the laser beams from the sides of the front tires.
You just experienced a life of a programmer from a mechanic perspective. I've become a master of decyphering what 100s of contractors has built over the course of many years and fixing the flaws of the design. Many times I come across things I just dont know the best way to tackle it. Knowing that I'm not the only person whose run into it I research the gaps and design proven solutions to those issues. YOU showed all that in your video only it was for a race car. I'm a self taught programmer who started programming myself as a little kid can applied my skilled to the coporate world for over 20 years now. I dropped out of college to work actually doing what I love. I love it ,and have the same OCD in that knowing that I've solved the issue myself and gained more knowledge in doing so. Love the videos Justin! Wish I had a mentor because I'd love to work on my own cars but I dont think thats in the cards for me.
AWESOME VIDEO CHIEF!!! The video is very informative that relates to everybody because most people deal with OEM. Tube Chasis isn't common in racing, Stock or slightly modified is for real street racing. Thanks for keeping it real Chief!!!
Tube chassis are VERY common in racing. Even in the street on small tires it has to be SPECIFIED a car has to have stock frame rails. And even then ppl are finding ways to incorporate factory frame rails and suspension into tube chassis cars lol mild steel chassis can be bought used for Pennies and even brand new you can find the kits for a grand or 2. Even chromoly isn’t near as foreign as it was a year or 2 ago. Most “budget builds” these days are second hand chassis cars lol the guys screamin stock this and stock that are the guys with huge budgets who can afford the best of the best subframes and whatnot to where they actually outperform the typical outdated chassis cars. That’s the main reason you see so many trucks at the track lol don’t have to battle the unibody design you can simply pull the bed and cab off and drop them on whatever tube chassis found cheap or billy rigged out back. Unibody are a tad more “complex” to put on a full tube chassis
I suggest you invest in a pls3 laser and a 2ft construction square. Once you have everything square on the floor, use the laser to mark points on the car. As long as the car is square on the lift.
Yalls channel has been so informative and I feel like I've actually learned so much about building and actually tuning legit racecar stuff. Seriously never thought so much was actually in chassis work. So much for but a big hp motor in and go fast 😂
I remember doing all of this to our race cars. I've also engineered a system to align Harleys, I've done over 300 bikes in the last 5 years. I'm an old engineer and developing the method to do all of this came from several old books, some trial and error. Its Geometry you are working with, once you know it you never forget. I think a lot of guys should watch this video, may you should set this up as a learning video for some people to learn. Thanks for sharing.
I only started watched street out laws bc of him since I was 15 I’m 21 now still watching it he the man that created it all he deserves a lot of love and support keep going make it far
I hate to say it, but I have spent 2 days getting through this video! I have had lots of personal issues with my mom, so couldn't watch it all at once! Anyway, HUGE CONGRATS!!!!! You got everything to a point that YOU are happy and you also have taught a LOT OF PEOPLE how to do the same thing with drivelines. I got to say, with a handful of plumb-bobs, tape measures, and concrete floor, YOU NAILED IT!!!! You have made it possible for anyone else to do the same, and told them the literature (yea, it's not always available to view online) to get to figure it out themselves! (Sometimes old school is pretty awesome!) Thanks Justin and Jackie, we ALWAYS look forward to your content! So many learn so much from y'all!
Another banger guy's as always!!! I even had to watch the whole manscape info commercial, Chief best narrated commercial ever I'm dien!! Great vid Jackie all love
Congratulations on the Manscape stuff. 👍 On a other note Chief, there are plenty of people out there who didn’t finish school and have way surpassed life just like yourself. I find it more impressive that you didn’t finish school and you know so all the stuff you do hold knowledge in. Cause we have people out there like my sister who graduated high school and even went to College and thinks that they know everything. But in Reality they know nothing about the real world and how it works cause they only studied book smarts in this game we call life. When you find something that you love doing , you’ll learn EVERYTHING about it. That’s all that my husband and I see in your videos. Keep up the good work and don’t be so hard on yourself about it. ✌️
Dude I learned so much watching your videos, people don't give you the credit for how smart you are and how driven you are to find the information that you're looking for that's why I have so much respect for you
Thanks for explaining the correct way to get everything aligned I'll definitely refer to this video for reference as I go through my car I appreciate this.
Hey chief and Jackie that was an awesome break down on getting your stuff right love the videos guys but ruh the Manscape promo was the best 😉 as always keep up the awesome work guys 💪 💯
I love that you have ended up taking this apart and found all this and you seem to have explained it fairly well as to why it was messed up and what you doing to set it back right. I bet this car will beat some serious small tire ass when you fix all the issues.
Good stuff I love it. My cars been worked so much exactly what I’ve been working on making everything back to where it is supposed to be. It happens over years. And a lot of wrecks could have been avoided. We’ve been twisting cars for years, you have to always check alignment. Good stuff
your problem with a right angle to the center line is the old 3---4---5 --- ratio because 3 squared plus 4 sguared equals 25 which is 5 squared. now you can make right angles any where you want on the center line
Ah good ole 7th grade pre algebra! What’s that? Pythagorean theorem? If they used fuggin race cars to teach it in damn class I can assure you they’d reach more kids! Good shit Mr Wayne! Good shit!
As the rear axle goes up and down it is no longer in line with the crankshaft right? If the engine was offset an Inch or so would that make much of a difference? Sometimes when you install a larger engine in a small area it has to go where it fits!
Just caught up on the videos, great content. I'm an old construction worker and to find a 90 degree angle pick a spot on your midline and measure 4 feet one direction and mark the spot. Pull a measuring tape from the 4 foot mark and another from the first midline mark out 3 feet and the diagonal should be 5 feet where the two tapes intersect. You can pull a line from those two marks and you got it. On a good calculator you can use the rise and run and put whatever measurement you want and it will give you the length of the diagonal intersect.
I've watched "the show" since it's inception and recently started following your youtube channel- a comment if I may: As a fellow old-school street racer (think 3M and Grove in SoCal, Baltimore / Washington 10k races and putting down self leveling grout to launch off of) you definitely have my attention when you go into great detail about suspension techniques, tuning, etc. Thank you for the contributions and appreciation for where we started...p.s. Larry is the man for SBC cylinder heads- he even helped me out with a turbo-related issue some years ago. You'll do well with those heads. Thanks again.
In a hundred years I would never have thought about using the intersection points of 2 arcs to find a perpendicular point to center line. That shit was awesome! Really looking forward to the next video. Thanks for taking time to make these videos. I wish I could give it 2 likes!!
Chief I thank you for going into such depth with what you put into preparing your race cars for battle your ability to explain to the common guy not just car building guys is something to applaud. I can't wait to see the Vette fly And go straight much love and support from Brisbane Australia
My buddies Dad has that "Door Slammer" chassis book. I've looked through it a couple of times and it is seriously awesome! Great resource for anyone building a car at home.
Beautiful lady, straight race car, manicured junk....... what else could anyone possibly want out of a RU-vid vid! NAILED IT AGAIN!! The edits get better every time, Justin’s explanations on “how to” are awesome, and the best freakin content yeah buddy!!!
First off enjoy all your content. Great stuff. I enjoy these type of videos. No disrespect as I know you have alot of great knowledge and I learned many things from this channel. Did I hear you say that the ladder bar crossmember is not parallel to the rear axle? Your instance center is measured off the front mounting point and with it on a angle you now have two instance center measurements. One side it is farther forward then the other. Your hung up on engine centerline but in a door slammer many cars( mopars) The engine is off set while the pinion is centered. I be more concerned with those front ladder bar mounts then the centerline. Oh love the garage cat. We all need shop cats! Lol.
Chief look up pythagoreans theorem for right side triangle. Any multiple of three four and five will give you a right side triangle IE perpendicular line. Maybe a good way to double check that PL. I know your way is absolutely correct but 3 4 5 works too. Great content keep up the good work. I have learned a ton watching your stuff
Isn't amazing what we thought we knew when we where in school! Years later is like damm, should of took or paid attention in that class. I'm a prime example of that. I have aways been a hands on learner. Now years later I have finally started to "RTM" read the manual! Great and educational video today! FYI, have Jackie read the Manscape ad. No disrespect Chief
Using center line and string does get you your perpendicular line off your center line, using a carpenter square the big one with all the numbers would do the same using it to figure out the triangles left or right of your centerline,it's just the string method is faster and easier to set up,glad to see you figuring out the vette not straight, but you gonna get it straight.Keep up good work Chief and Jackie !!!!
Good job on your videos and descriptions ya ocd maybe but you make it understandable!! And you've done REALLY WELL not finishing school. Some of us weren't cut out for school. I drove trucks for 33years never never made it through school. I wish my body didn't give out on me I'd still be doing it. You are very intelligent and have earned the respect of many, so ocd ain't no big deal it's probably helped you to be the man you are!! You two keep the videos coming and I will keep watching!! Thank you two very much!!
I read that chassis handbook 20 years ago! I learned everything I know about chassis set up from reading that manual! That is one of the last speed secret book left! You really brought back memories when I saw the cover.
I’ve never built or “Optimized” a race/street car before but I love learning new things. Your mind is a crazy place to visit but I always enjoy the trip Chief! Jackie… keep that man in line… I mean drivetrain. Keep that drivetrain in line.
Awesome video Chief and Jackie best team at midweststreetcars yous are #thebestinthegame thanks for sharing your knowledge with us and everyone should check out your #RU-vid channel because its the best on the planet
Good Job getting it figured out I bought the same book back in 1988 , you try telling people cars are built by Numbers and they don't get it leveled out, plum bobed , measure twice or more just have to write them down too. Like you said if it's not done right you'll know , I still would have put a 9 in housing in with a back brace just for gear changing and reliability too.
@@justinshearer3016 chief you had somebody scamming all your RU-vid viewers they’re trying to say somebody’s winning the Lexus ES 350 for $475 and I know you wouldn’t ask for $475 you want to send the car and it wouldn’t be a Lexus so you should probably watch out for your RU-vid yours because now I feel like I can’t even watch if I’m going to be a victim the scamming
Manscape the chief lawnmower and hedge trimmer lmao 😂 had me rolling 😂my lawnmower crank is crooked so I manscape and cleaned up the race clipper mess hahahahahahahahha
Justin/Chief, The first 30 seconds of this video says it all. LoL I've literally watched this video 3 times start to finish. And your dedication and skills to research how to do it yourself and make it right is the proof of your ability to solve any problem. I said early on when you hinted that this car had alignment issues and then the condition of the bearings that this old vetted wasn't 100% straight front to back and side to side. Look at what you just did in a few nights with some pretty primitive tools. Imagine if you had a chassis table available, And the things you could do. Btw, My Vet.wife says you cat looks like she has worms/parasites. And will do better with out them lol.
I like the way you figured it out. I’ve been pulling ( with measuring ) perimeter chassis for 40 years. All cars and trucks are basically 3 squares with a center section being most important. Where the engine resides and the rear cargo area. Your always projecting off of an undamaged area to find the damage or in your case improperly installed parts. I remember you saying the left front frame rail was up?!! There has to be some damage in the front square (engine area) I’d look for replaced body parts. You should find if the car has been wheel hit or whacked in the nose with diamond being in the whole rail or sway in the nose both causing the motor to be on a cocked angle. Most important is to cross cross your center section and see if the chassis has diamond in it. ( the whole frame rail being back on the body so you can see the crankshaft is going to be not parallel with the ground either. Your from center measurements may be ok and you’ll get frustrated as things are on center. So either the front square where the engine is has been swayed over of the whole rail has been pushed back. Both causing the crankshaft to be not parallel with the direction you want the race car to go. That rail being up is a sign to start looking for damage. It didn’t come from the factory that way. I hope this long way of saying a short thing helps you guys out!
Hey back to the video you did check out when the light came on. Dave was making a sandwich or something. He stayed the same car behind all the way. If you all left together it would of been a close dam race in his defense. But you got the w regardless!! Nice lick man!!!
Enjoyed the educational video guys but the Manscape commercial was outstanding!!!! Keep up the good work & I hope you get the Vette straightened out soon.
Holy faaawk!! Dude i hate commercials but dam yhis had me rolling!!! Love what ya been doing and been watching forever. It does crack me up that the show is still following your lead with these end game deals. You the man dog!
Yay for sponsors. Interested to see how he plays it, are we going to have meat delivered to our back door? Or clean up the Bushes around your front or the back door. ##OGposListener17
Chief is always the greatest one at all of them I always felt it's just not the same watching without them I got to go to RU-vid and watch how he does things and how is cars running I just wish he'd go back on there but he got to live his life and go by what he wants
I just love these videos. Jackie, I see you got the kitty to come around! Love the editing! Chief, your not only a bad ass driver but your entire knowledge of the entire race car is WHY your able to do more with less. There’s some other guys who could REALLY use your help. These guys lose races over dumb shit that you would NEVER miss.
@ Justin Shearer I’m the same way with anything I’m really into as well. I don’t want someone else telling me the problem, I want to investigate and do it myself bc imo no one else is going to care about it MORE than ME! That said, I’m certainly not opposed to someone helping me with things if I’m really stuck, but I still have this need to totally understand the problem, what caused the problem, the solution to the problem and how said problem could’ve potentially caused another problem elsewhere so that I can make sure that’s checked out as well! 😁. There are some “ well known “ drivers out there that seem to want the very best results without knowing exactly how to diagnose and fix it themselves. Same with tuning . It’s cool to have Steve Pwtty or Jamie Miller tune your car I guess but, to me ( and I know it’s the same for you ) I want to know how to do it ALL myself including chassis suspension, the whole nine yards. When you spun the tires at cash days a few weeks ago, it was the first time you had lost a race bc you spun in a LONG time. Why is that when we see guys at every single race no matter track or street blow the tires? It’s because YOU put in the work on YOUR car and you have such a great knowledge for reading a surface and you know exactly what to do in the laptop AND setting up suspension, four link etc. I swear if I were super wealthy, id buy you an NPK car, pay for all crew and expenses bc I KNOW if you had the best stuff or what you wanted, you’d wipe the floor with those guys! You’ve proven it over and over that you can win anywhere anytime against anyone and you’ve done it with FAR less than those guys. Bristol, Bandimere , back of the track , Armegedon STREET, not many guys if any can say THAT.
I am so glad that you brought up this subject this is a great video I am by no means on the level of Drag Racing and street racing that you are I am a 25 year Seasoned veteran automotive mechanic that has built some fast cars and knows how to build performance Engines and ultra capable 4 wheel drive Too a certain level Cannot I tell you how many times I've had customers customers bug me about issues like this in their car and I have to tell them it's a science you have to sit down you have to work it out and you have to know what you're doing People don't like hearing that they're in over their head And they cannot afford To pay me to work out the bugs because I am not a drag Racer I could do this on my own car but not yours Sorry but that's just the way it is it's an evolving changing science from day-to-day thank you for the vid appreciate you chief you're my favorite street 405 Racer old school Pontiac Make what you got the fastest it can be kind of guy and I love it Sorry I'm mechanic Grammar is not will never be a concern of mind giant run on sentence.
