This is definitely it. It gives Gege the opportunity to explore how Sukuna came to be and get rid of him in a satisfying way. Also, it makes sense that Yuji's domain is the non-lethal type. Gege mentioned that those kinds of domains were older and more traditional and seeing as Yuji is a descendant of a guy whose soul is from such an era and has spent so much time bound to an ancient character like Sukuna, it tracks. I'm sure his domain would be like Takaba's (where the victim is forced to participate and may not realize the damage being done until it's too late) like you said and would have the invisible slashes of Sukuna's domain doing their thing on the soul of whoever is trapped in it as the train moves through their most soul-shaping memories and the victim wouldn't realize it until their soul has been dismantled to pieces. Then Yuji just needs to adjust his sure-hit to cut away at Sukuna's soul until Megumi's is all that's left. I also don't think Sukuna'll escape though. Yuji needs to be the one to take Sukuna out and letting him escape would prolong the manga and delay the satisfying end Yuji needs to have after all he's been through.

I doubt it he doesn't need to have regret either he's not that deep of a character he's just strong and does what he likes with no clear goal almost NPC like. But I do think he might experience fear
