I agree given the era back then of Black vs White can you imagine the feelings they must have had when they won races against white drivers? 🤔

Back in the 60s and 70s there were quite a few black street racers in my area and I was friends with 90% of them. It was all about cars and racing skin color never mattered. I'm still friends with those guys. We all respected each other and had a great time. I remember seeing the Smallwood cars at Englishtown I think it was. He reminds me of all the guys I raced with back in the day. Great video and very entertaining. Thanks for the history of the Smallwood Bros. I'm glad you are keeping the history alive.

@@richardturk7162 "it was all about cars and racing skin colour never mattered". Seems pretty straight forward but of course we know not all looked at it quite this way? Must have been a very cool time to have been in the street racing scene. 😃

Love these old school interviews and the black history of early drag racing, off and on the track. As a Brooklynite I can go and see some of these streets that they race in Brooklyn. Red Hook, Linden Blvd and Fountain Avenue. The building that housed the Oldsmobile dealership still exists on Flatbush Avenue. The neon sign is still hanging there from the second floor!😮

I had a yellow 55 nomad called "screaming canary" and used to race down in Red Hook down by the water side , I think it was 23rd street and first ave, back in 70-71. I remember you coming over with your Olds442. I was to race this green 57 chevy called "the Green Hornet" owned by a postal worker. We line up, take off and 3/4 down the street, right tire blew and I lost control and rammed sideways into a wall. Bent frame and all I could save was the engine and tranny. Man I missed those days and in 74 joined the marines. Great racing !

That Cuda is still around, I know the guy who owns it today. It's actually the 71 pro stock car that had updated 72 grille and taillights, you can tell by the front turn signals in the valance. The car that sold at auction isn't that the real 71 car, it's a fake. So the real 71 exists and it's waiting it's turn to be restored

Backyard Barn Finds for the drag racing history and Stapleton42 for NASCAR history. The best real grass roots history with real guys and gals who lived it and made it what it is. You guys fill in so many gaps in the history and evolution of these sports. A person would never learn any of this by watching any amount of sports event coverage. The stories of friends and families and the support structures of these people is so encouraging and spotlights the importance of relationship and trust. None of the advertised greats that made their sponsors millions of dollars would have ever been heard of if it weren’t for the challenges they faced from these people. Thank you for digging up the past and sharing it with us. This stuff enhances many of my older memories of automotive sports.

Would not have this racing history save for your work and the internet. I knew the names and some of the history of all the other big name racers mentioned, but never heard of Smallwood Brothers, Brooklyn Heavy , Mutt Brothers or Ronald Lyles. A good bit can be due to regional exposure, I'm from the south, so Northeast, Chicago, LA street or regional racing wouldn't register. Great job interviewing your guest and the whole series.
