Yoakam had always been ahead of things as a creator-he’s an actor and filmmaker too and it just wasn’t done that much during this era. Many of his videos have this element.
This video intro is an excerpt from a video compilation DVD sold back in the day. You have to watch the whole DVD to understand the story line of this video. The DVD theme is all about a person facing the reality of losing at love.
I love Dwight Yoakam's music; closest thing to Rockabilly one will hear nowadays. I never did understand the artistic concept of the start of this particular video...
In the mid 90's there was a CMT special with Dwight and they aired all his videos up to that point. He even gave some of the artistic ideas behind their creation. Many of them were meteohoric. What i can remember from this one was that the character struggled at night (sundown to sunrise) from ??? (heartache? )and that place he went was his nightly escape. "Takes A Lot To Rock You" has a kinda weird intro and Toad is also in the intro to "Suspicious Minds." Both "Only Hurts When I Cry" and "Long White Cadillac" have some weird stuff during the videos too.
This is from the album, This Time. I think it was his biggest selling album. And just my own opinion, after Pete Anderson quit producing, it hasn't been the same. Although, the acoustic album was great. Just Dwight and his guitar.
It's not really a live version of the song but you should check out Dwight Yoakam's cover of Princes "Purple Rain" it's a bluegrass version of the song. And this was Dwight being different from everyone that's why it's like a little movie. Yes he was also trying to show his acting skills. He's been in several movies including sling blade.
