It's so rare to find an AH reaction on youtube, and then it's mainly guitarists reacting with a musicians ear. So well done guys for taking that step and making an AH video reacted to by a non guitarist. AH has been my favourite player since I first heard him the mid 1980's, (one of those "What am I listening to?" moments), and once exposed to his playing, there was no turning back. 'Genius' and 'unique' are often used to describe musicians, but without a doubt Allan deserves both titles. Once again, well done for reacting to AH, and keep up the good work... Cheers Bob....
Hi Bob, Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. He definitely changed Nick's life as well and could never look back. We're glad you enjoyed the reaction and expect many more to come -- I can't wait to honor AH by listening to his music with headphones and my undivided attention. We appreciate you stopping by and for your positive comment. Peace, Lex. :)
Managed Allan for 7 years. Going to Japan was his dream. I had to guarantee the Yakuza (promoters) break even 20k. Allen cried when I told him. Worked on this for three weeks as his thank you to Japan. Not one ticket unsold.. all musicians.. with notebooks
There has never been a guitarist like Allan his style, tone, technique is all his own. He has done much for not just the genre of jazz but the guitar as well.
Allan is the greatest musician I've ever heard or seen in my life, after being a fan for 35 years, I feel so fortunate to have seen him live a few years before he passed away. Allan is my favorite musician as well! Please do more Holdsworth reactions! Glad that you guys are digging Rush as well. I hope you will also do some Yes and Genesis reactions too. I just discovered your channel, you guys seem so sweet and such good listeners! Subscribed!
We will definitely do more Holdsworth! Being his favorite musician, it’s what he listens to most. Yes is definitely on our list to cover as well. We’ve only done one Genesis song so far but many more to come. Next on his list is Jean Luc Ponty - Point of No Return; we know you’ll enjoy that! Have you listened to our MSM Schmidt? If you haven’t and aren’t familiar with them, check it out. You’re in for a treat! Thank you for your support and kind comments. :) - Lex
Allan Holdsworth was an early proponent of using the whammy bar to produce his smooth legato style. His guitar tone sounded more like a sax or violin. His solo on U.K.'s "In the dead of the night" is a personal favorite of mine. I like you expanding into other areas of music.there is so much great music out there to share!
Allan's Grandad was a jazz pianist, his Grandparents raised him. So he was exposed to jazz and improvisation early on. As he was learning guitar he also tried Clarinet, Sax for a short time when he was younger. Then later the Violin during his Ponty days. You need to listen to Coltrane and you will hear his influence on Allan. Not verbatim but more in how he explored established music theory worlds and then created new ones. Holdsworth did the same, which is why he improvises soo much. His SynthAx playing is remarkably woodwind based. Its akin to Jeff Berlin who was influenced by taking Trombone transcriptions over to bass, a totally perfect transistion.
Allan Holdsworth. The greatest guitar player I have ever heard. Been listening to his entire music catalog ( solo albums and session work with other bands) since 1982. My favorite guitarist
Love him and his unique sound. Did you know that Fredrik Thordendahl of Meshuggah has him as a HUGE influence. You can hear it in about every Meshuggah solo 😊
Listen to "Sol Niger Within", of Thordendahl's solo project "Fredrik's Special Defects". There are many Holdsworthian episodes going on although it's pure extreme metal.
@jacobtapianieto9655 I even suggested it to my favourite reaction channel where it got featured 🙂ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2csEBsI95Yw.html
I saw this Road Games tour, with Chad Wackerman on drums, back in the day. Jeff Berlin was playing bass too - another monster musician. To this day I've never been more impressed by a live band, and mostly by how amazing Alan's live rig sounded. I mean, I expected their playing to be great, but the overall guitar sounds were incredible, achieving many of the advanced effects that I thought were studio magic right there on stage.
@@nomnomnommy2955 I think it was just them all night, with a break in the middle. Quite a show. (EDIT - after a year to think about it, I seem to remember a local fusion band playing when I got there, but I don't remember their name! Holdsworth did do a long set with a break in the middle though..)
Saw all the versions of his live bands going all the way back to I.O.U. When he was with Gary Husband it was magic and yet the Jeff Berlin / Chad Wackerman combo was the best live. Jeff even adopted some hammerdowns when playing Tokyo Dream which was a really an incredible comp to an already great song. Mindblowing,
Yes, it is Chad on drums Gordon Beck on keys and Jimmy Johnson on bass. I love how you talk about him. I knew Allan and I said exactly everything you say right to him. I miss that guy terribly. Thank you so much for keeping him in our hearts.
I'm 53 and I know AH since 1985...When I heard for the first time the I.O.U. album I changed my mind about music definitely. He don't play guitar as guitar...but as clarinet..sax...or piano or anything. Absolutely nothing comes close what he express beyond the jazz....rock or fusion. Allan Holdsworth is UNIQUE. The One. Incomparable.
Oh, that's the right song to enjoy his brilliance. It's so beautiful, a beauty unmatched. I can't describe all his greatness on this track faithfully, impossible. THe most beautiful guitar solo ever made. I loved your reaction guys. Subscribing right now. Greetings from Brazil.
Thank you! Allan is my favorite player ever! No one comes close to the imagination of his. We have more Allan Holdsworth videos!! So happy you liked the video 😁
Love Alan Holdsworth! The Greatest guitarist nobody knows!!!!! True genius.... No Holdsworth, no Van Halen or half of Jazz/Fusion and Progressive Rock....
I'm guessing that all Alan Holdsworth fans are very familiar with Thirty Years and Nevermore. It's the non Holdsworth fans who need to listen to those songs.
I would love to see your reaction to "Nuages". It's on Allan's 1996 album None Too Soon. This track features Allan playing a MIDI controller called a Synthaxe. It has strings, but it also has buttons. He plays it at the beginning and near the end of the song. To see Allan play the synthaxe, go to "Allan Holdsworth rehearsal of "Pud Wud".
Holdsworth is fantastic. I love his chords, the non functional harmony, symmetrical scales, legato , etc. I just wish he did more ballads and jazz standards.
This Couple Reaction is indeed very very touching and sweet. Well done lady for letting go and coming up with your very sweet genuine interpretations. I reckon Allan would've appreciated this
Hey you two. I'm new to the channel. Nick is a big Holdsworth fan. You should listen to the Level 42 album Guaranteed. Alan Holdsworth played on this album and especially the song "If You Were Mine". He plays a great solo. Not to mention that Level 42 has one of the greatest bass guitarists on the planet,Mark King. Also, the album has Jakko Jaksic on the cover( currently with King Crimson) but Alan is on the recording. Jakko was the tour guitarist on the Guaranteed tour.
HOLDSWORTH ES EL MAXIMO EXPONENTE EN GUITARRA DE ESTOS ULTIMOS 40 AÑOS ............HENDRIX Y HOLDSWORTH SON LOS GRANDES INNOVADORES DE LOS SIGLOS MUSICALES .....¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Dude, that's AWESOME! Never listened to AH before but definitely will in the future! That solo was almost like hamonically fueled! loved it! You definitely have to check out Gamalon and a tune they did called "Cabin #14" (on their self titled album) or "Bleeker St." or "The Lost Ghost" from their Aerial View CD. They're kind of a fusion Rock/Jazz band.
There's almost no reaction to this super talented guitarist...very underrated like Nick said. btw I just watched your Tool "the Grudge" video and liked you guys almost instantly; You know what music is about and you are genuine and sincere (sorry for my bad english). Keep up the good work guys !
Bro.. i'm so happy i came across your video. What a nice introduction, and let me say i couldn't agree more in all you said abou Allan. Best wishes to you guys!
Hi from Scotland! I just discovered you both reacting to the older Genesis tracks and couldn't believe it! I've been listening to Genesis since 1976 and am a huge fan! So nice to see fellow souls really feeling the music. Warms my heart! On the subject of Allan Holdsworth, are you aware that he played guitar for the band Level 42 on their album "Guaranteed"? A great track to react to would be "A Kinder Eye"...Allan's playing is sublime!
Agreed completely with your assessment of Holdsworth . The penultimate electric guitarist for many , myself included . As a Classical Vocalist (Oratorio - Verdi) , we could certainly venture similar designations ! Whether Pavarotti , Jussi Bjorling , Enrico Caruso , Jan Peerce , Jon Vickers , Fritz Wunderlich , Franco Corelli ...et al ... Take your pick . On one level , short of breaking down the sub nano particles of subtleties , this level of undeniable mastery is reserved for a short list . In the realm of drummers that is equally evident . Whether Buddy Rich , Dave Weckl , Vinnie Colaiuta , Dennis Chambers , Billy Cobham , Tony Williams , Tony Royster Jr. ...here again ...
Great couple, Great channel, great music! You guys are the trifecta of bliss! Soooo envious, I wish my wife had your fantastic musical taste Lex! Chad is on drums, PLEASE check out all the AH drummers please it will expand your appreciation for Allans music. PLEASE check out Virgil Donati with the band "Ice Fish", Its life changing! Virgil is the Allan Holdsworth of drums ! Peace from Detroit MI.
This is a hard one to begin with. But this is the most sublimely beautiful version! Check out Allen's "Live at Yosh's" album and in particular watch/listen to "Fred". As you know Allan is a Guitarist's Guitarist; a Guitar God! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aB6OJo68avo.html
My boss was a fan when I worked at Magic Music in San Francisco in the 80s. He was an arranger & guitarist. His playing, once I heard it, seemed 'too much (like Charley Parker)'. ("yeah, but Weather Report?...") Anyway, I'm only occasionally drawn to virtuosity, but not these days so much. I was more interested in his synth-axe tech stuff. But HELL YES, a player's player. Best of a period.
I wouldn't say he was underrated. One might say under-appreciated, but when your music is as specialised as his, in that jazz-rock idiom, the audience will always be relatively small. Fans of his music are partly fans because his musical choices were uncompromising. Road Games came at a time when people like Eddie Van Halen were trying to expand his audience, by moving his playing into a more commercially viable rock direction. Of course, he wasn't having any of it. Even as a sideman in other bands, his uncompromising attitude caused issues. When he was called in by Mark King to replace the Alan Murphy in Level 42, following Murphy's premature death, he refused to play chords apparently, and would only play lead lines. A maverick and a genius.
Loved this song. Besides his solo work can you recommend any of the projects he was involved in ? Need to start exploring Alan Holdsworth. Off topic on a different video which I forgot to comment on and can't find at the moment you asked for suggestions for more modern prog rock groups. I would like to suggest The Dear Hunter. Very difficult to suggest1 song of theirs but a starting point that I will throw out is from the Act IV album. a song called "Is There Anybody Here? "
I'm guessing there's no point in asking you to react to the In The Dead Of Night suite or anything else from the first UK album then. You must know that like the back of your hand!
You should check out the following track from Bill Bruford, also featuring Allan Holdsworth: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TaoQPmTF7zk.html
OK. Excuse me guys for my English and my point of view. BUT. Man lives with his wife and from 2006 AH is his favorite musician. From that time his wife was hearing AH in a background but NEVER had a serious interest. Even she listened Tokio Dream before. Guys. I remember then I was hearing just a few notes from AH in a first time, I just feel like WHO IS THIS GIVE ME ALL OF HIM I WANT TO KNOW ALL ABOUT HIM AND HIS MUSIC!!! Now she listening AH and says that it's amazing. Really? You are both guys moving heads in a rhythm but it's totally clear who is understanding the music and who is just in fun time. It's OK. Many people on the AH live concerts times speak loud and laughing when he was playing. Personally you could feel free about your reactions for shure but I'm out of your channel. Best wishes.
