**Nintendo Wii Shop services are shutting down March 2018! You have until 2019 to download this free tool from the Wii Shop, but after that your Virtual Console and Wii Ware games are locked into your Wii forever...*
The Wii Identity Transfer tool is a nice feature to have for owners of both Wii and Wii U game consoles, but its use is fraught with potential peril. I try my best to lay out the risks involved, and how the landscape has changed since we first tried to tackle the subject. (It continues; see note above.)
This video was years in the making. Because so many things about the Wii and its services changed since the Wii U launched, I never completed filming it until now, when I was sure things were more settled down. (And then, today when I uploaded , Nintendo announces N64 and DS Virtual Console for the Wii U. NEVER ENDS.)
Well, we finally released the main video over at Famicom Dojo, so I figured now would be the time to finish this rant! Mostly I wanted to let you all know that Miis created after the transfer are stuck on your Wii forever... at least using this method. Fortunately, there’s an alternative that will work even after Wii Shop services inevitably shut down (UPDATE: 2019!), which we will cover later.

It's probably worth mentioning that your Wii games get a small picture quality bump on the Wii U thanks to the HDMI connection. Hehe, poor Sean. I can hear the anguish in his voice from having to keep re-filming this!

UPDATE: That transfer tool is still downloadable along with the Skyward Sword Save Data Update Channel. The only thing that was removed from that channel is all of the games you didn't download before January of 2019.

Yeah this is 100% true! I just took my old launch day Wii out of storage for its 15th anniversary/nostalgia and checked a lot of stuff out, including the Wii Shop Channel. I was able to download both the transfer tool and the Skyward Sword Sava Data Update Channel. Totally unexpected but still possible.

Well, I decided to do it a while ago since my Wii wasn't reading disks at the time. I brought games on the Wii (far too many, was before I started getting into retro game systems) but I haven't really been upset by it. The Gamecube controller support is sad to miss and while Brawl is one that I used (mainly) we now have Smash 4. The N64 games are now coming to the Wii U so those will transfer over soon. I'm just glad I got a Gamecube with the right cables so really, my Wii is in storage now since really I have zero use for it.

I have to say, I'm glad the 3DS transfer process (at least from my original to XL) wasn't that difficult. I just wish the new 3DS was more appealing to purchase. I really want a WiiU but I'm afraid I won't play it much because I grew up with Game Boys, the Game Gear, and DS for my video gaming fixes, so I was always more than happy to get ports like Super Mario Bros. Deluxe or Donkey Kong Country (or, like when I got my GBA and it was packed in with Yoshi's Island, one of my favorite games ever!) I don't quite have the disposable income of an actual adult, I just have some leftover funds for college to buy some stuff like food... clothing.... etc. Maybe some day I can get a Wii U, the pack in bundle with Super Mario 3D World is tempting and a really good price deal in my opinion, but... I'm going to be studying abroad in Japan for a year so... I can't say it is high on my priority list.

So just to get this straight- all the messages and gaming time history in the messages area of the Wii are not transferred to the emulated version on the Wii U?

You can use your 3DS to transfer from Mii Channel to your 3DS then to your Wii U

I bought a GameCube to Wii Remote adapter a couple years back to get around the lack of GameCube controller compatibility on Wii U. It acts as a Classic Controller rather than a GameCube controller, but I can't think of any Wii games off the top of my head that ONLY supported the GC controller and not the CC. It's not perfect (since it has to emulate plus, minus AND the home button with the GameCube's single start button they made single tap minus, quick double tap for plus, and hold it for three seconds for the home menu), but for the most part it's been great, plus you can use it with games like Mario Kart 8 that support the classic controller but not a GameCube controller. www.amazon.com/Mayflash-Nintendo-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Wii/dp/B00BS520SG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427964840&sr=8-2 I also picked up a Hori Battlepad recently which is a classic controller shaped like a GameCube controller and it's pretty good too. Why the hell would they not allow you transfer Miis through the Wii Remotes? Wouldn't they have had to purposefully remove that feature from the virtual Wii? That's kind of scummy if that's what they did.

They took out all kinds of features on the Virtual Wii version of the firmware. Some stuff makes sense, like the video output settings (which are controlled by the Wii U), but also messaging, friend codes, and other features that makes me wonder if it wasn't the basis for the Wii Mini firmware. You know, I haven't fired up my Wii Mini to find out if the controller transfer functionality is gone...

That's Orange The question then is why would they take that away with the Wii Mini? Wasn't the Wii Mini just a Wii with all the internet functionality ripped out? Why would they take out a function that's completely offline?

doubt will get a wiu for a long time since i just got a wii fews months ago from goodwill for $9.50 new sueprr mario bros wii came with it. had to by a controller for $12.50 from ebay and sensor bar for $4 or something from amazon but it works. got it for gamecube games in progressive mostly because cable for gamecube is like $100. i have homebrew channel and some emulatores and stuff so alright i guess. also got a hack newer super mario bros wiii that i will play when down with new super mario bros wii. one reason why i hacked it. you hear of this hack or have it? www.destructoid.com/newer-super-mario-bros-wii-is-available-for-free-256684.phtml

I've never bothered transferring any of my Virtual Console games from the Wii to the Wii U... I just don't see the point. The library of games on the Wii's VC is still much better and has other non Nintendo systems like the Master System, Genesis, TurboGrafx-16/CD, Neo Geo, Arcade, and at one point even the Commodore 64. To be honest, Nintendo is so backwards with their digital games distribution, that I decided to never buy a digital game from them again until they change it to work on the person's ID account (not attached to the hardware) like any other digital service such as PSN, Xbox Live, Steam, GOG, iTunes, Google Play, etc. Hopefully the end of Club Nintendo will represent this change!
