This solo is an excellent lesson in applying the principles of classic pedal steel country guitar licks in a stones-ian context. Notice how many of the bends are not typical blues bends. It's more about looking at a scale, and finding a way to use bends to move through it.

Oh, and "California Stars" was the first song I performed live. I did it to honor my cancer survivor friend, Beth, at a National Cancer Survivor's Day event. BEST DAY OF MY LIFE. :)

Just subscribed to your channel and loving it. For what it's worth, casting my vote for more Wilco and Tweedy, especially his 'quiet' acoustic work.

Thanks! Welcome to the chill hang zone! I love that first Tweedy record - gotta do something off it. I feel like Jeff Tweedy is one of the best songwriters of his generation. Sorta the indie rock Tom Petty.

Thanks Dave! I'm rediscovering the benefits of the round sound of the 1484 - it's a pleasant change from the woody brightness of my tweed pro :-)

Great job Eric. Loved seeing/hearing the Sivertone again! Keep it up sir!

Thanks Jeff! Yeah, I think Jay was a big part of what pushed Wilco into the arty/weird direction they had for the next several records. Tweedy probably would've ended up there on his own - he's so damn talented, but I think Bennett moved things along quicker.

hi eric, i love your videos, its an amazing way of learning guitar from a unique perspective. i really like that you talk about being a tasteful guitarrist, personally i've been strugling with combining that tastefulness with "shredding" or rather a more "energical" way of soloing. I would really like if you could teach something related to that in a future video. Greetings from argentina and sorry if my english is not quite correct :)

Thanks Michael! Yeah, Prince, Tom Petty, Jay Bennett, and who knows how may others. I read up on Jay's death recently, and it sounds like he was having the same hip problem that Tom Petty had, plus the same drug history. Weeks before his death, he tried to sue Tweedy in an effort to get money to pay for hip replacement surgery that his health insurance wouldn't cover.

I think you would enjoy the guitar solo in East Indian Princess by Loudon Wainwright on Album III. Not sure who it is (Elliot Randall?), but it is 16 seconds of in-the-pocket playing with the same bendy quality.

I'll have to check that one out! I love all the Wainwrights, especially Rufus's first two records - what a cool family!

Your lessons, and tonal Gulati are endlessly fascinating. Loving the learning journey which for me is frankly still a step to far for my 2years guitar playing experience. What key is this solo in. I understand the major scale or mixolydian concept of bending notes into these half step vs the bigger bends in the Blues Pentatonics. Thanks and keep up the inspiring lessons.
@EricHaugenGuitar

Thanks Richard! The Solo is in G major, and it's possible Jay may have used a B-Bender equipped telecaster. Being that most of us can't responsibly afford to buy a $1000 for just one song, I transcribed the solo for good ol' regular guitar :-)

That solo has a Thompson-y feel to it; it reminds me of solos from Fairport stuff.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 5 лет назад
I can totally see that! Thompson is the king of non-traditional bending! I recently transcribed his live solo on "Mascara Tears" and it's bonkers - he will literally bend anything to anything else!
@dougaigner3258
@dougaigner3258 5 лет назад
Yeah, Thompson also drones along with his bends, which you start off with in this solo... very cool!

Thanks man! Truth be told, everything you see me play on my channel takes weeks of practice to get ready. I'm no virtuoso - just like everybody else, if I want to play something, I doggedly work at it :-)

Oh I don’t doubt your practice regimen, but it always comes out tasty on the videos, unlike some of us who are more, as Nick Lowe said of Elvis Costello, Little Hands of Concrete. Jay was great, thanks for the lesson.

Eric, fantastic song choice. I have always been fascinated by Jay's work on "Forget the Flowers." Heard he used a guitar with a G and b-bender? Does this exist?

I love your vids Eric! This might be a stupid question but how do you compile the backing tracks? Specifically the drums? I'd like to play over some backing drums but don't know where to start?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 6 лет назад
Thanks Paul! These days I use Toontrack EZ drummer software - it's really great and fun to use. If you have garageband, that has a pretty good built-in AI drummer as well. I used to use that, but the Toontrack has better sounds, and allows more specific adjustments.

Eric Haugen When you finally crack that monster I bet it’s going to feel so good to play. It’s definitely one of Ribots best. It’s got that stabbing rhythmic attack that’s almost hypnotic. Take your time with it. The Ribot lessons you’re doing are first class by the way.
