"Don't let a bit of bad weather put you off!" That's what my dog; The-Chezza-Pooch said as I grumbled about the wind and rain and settled into my cosy couch to enjoy a second round of ASDA's own potato hoops.
"But it's one of those storms with a name" I protested.
"What name?"
"Bebbie, or Barbie or Bibbit or something" I responded finishing my Hula Hoop imitations and reaching for a morbidly oversized bowl of Crunchynut Cornflakes.
"You can't be worried about something called Barbie-Baby" She argued sitting patiently at my feet and fixing me with an unblinking stare that combined vulnerability and obsessive-persistence in equal measures.
I didn't respond. A silence fell in the room, a silence that was punctuated only by the gentle slurp of my breakfast cereal being devoured. Chezza kept staring. And then, almost imperceptibly at first, a noise like a squeaky gate began emanating from what seemed like the back of her head. I knew it would build in pitch and volume and then turn into the combined sound of a wolf howling, a toddler crying and fingernails being scraped across a chalk-board.
"Alright, alright" I said "Just don't start that din"
"You'll enjoy it once you're out there" She said her mood changing from tragic to bullish in an instant.
"Oh god, it's past two already" I said. "I bet we end up setting up in the dark!"
To be continued (watch the video).
We made it to the Rhinog mountains a little later than I had hoped and hiked our way up for what turned out to be a very gentle storm-camp. I love tent-time so always look forward to being cooped up in a binbag with the rain hammering outside. It's basically a game of dens that you're allowed to play when you grow up.
Chezza was right - storm Babet was a push-over and we just got a bit wet.
Good call Chezza!
If you fancy taking part in such adventures, I run Wild Camping and hiking trips all over the UK.

The Justin Bieber storm, LOL! 🤣😂. It's been wet for days and days all over here, in Moscow and Minsk, the places I live in between. No heavy storms though. Glad to hear you're staying safe! And oddly enough, I do like several Bieber's songs. BTW, I mentioned my potential visit to the UK some time ago. Suspended it for a while for even a number of reasons, but I'm doing OK for the most part and set for a trip in my mind. Cheers! Mike

Another excellent vid, James. As you well know, I love Y Rhinogydd, for precisely the reasons you say in the vid itself. You don't have to stray far from the trails and you can be in areas where there's little sign of human activity - except, weirdly, there are ancient drystone walls that seem to serve no purpose, because no-one has ever lived, farmed, or mined in those places! I have this story in my head that some wealthy landowner paid a fortune to hundreds of peasants, over years and years, to build these walls. Then told everyone to, "stay orf moi laaaand." And everyone looked at him, shrugged, and said, "er, yeah, alright, we weren't intending to go there anyway, you can barely find a spot big enough to erect a Hilleberg Akto, so we ain't going to be building any houses up there."

Just came across your video by chance. I really enjoyed it - thank you. I love how easily you chatted and I was there with you! Just my kind of camping and in the Rhinogs too. My old stomping grounds as an ex-Ouwtard Bounder in Aberdovey. All the very best.

One thing that I don't have to worry about here in the mountains of NZ and that is drinking water from a stream or river. We have hundreds of unnamed Streams all of which are clear and cool. I sometimes see tourist using a filter, but I think that's habit. Been drinking from them for over 50 years +. Anyway, that's my two-penny worth. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺

Hey, I would love to visit NZ and get into the mountains! Do you have any nasty creepy crawlies or snakes? Your tummy might have developed resistance? I will drink from a stream high in the mountains in Scotland. No where else in the UK. Thanks so much for the comment, it's massively appreciated! You're a star! Cheers.

We don't have snakes but do have 'creepy crawlies. test have been done on the rivers and streams over the years and the ones in the mountains are 'Pure' when they pass through the fields and out to the sea they may have picked up some chemicals etc. Just got in after a full day in the mountains and had been drinking from the streams, I never carry drinking water. @@mountainmantararua8824 Hi. Are there genuine hiking, rambling, camping and alike videos from NZ? I'd really appreciate if you could recommend me something. The more amateurish, the better. Anything will do, but in general I'm not a fan of big, sleek, highly monetized channels but for rare exceptions.

There are plenty of videos on tramping in NZ look at "Tramping in NZ".My local forest is the Tararuas, google it, it's 80ks long and 30ks wide and up to 1600m high. I'm sure that you would love to be there. Hope that helps, Cheers

A 90mph storm was forcast a long time ago, so up I went into the hills in my trusty Akto, leaving the Tarra at home, that was fun. I notice that you pitch your tent correctly, other youtubers tighten the akto's or enan's pole guylines so much that the pole goes flat ontop, then complain about not enough head height. Surprised that you didnt double pole your akto for a storm if expecting high winds.

Hey 👋👋. Thanks for the comment, I did actually once make a RU-vid video where I did indeed set the akto up incorrectly and during the video whined like a small child about how I couldn't sit up and was consequently corrected by watches of the video on my comments feed. I did actually double pole it but I omitted it from the video. What is your go-to tent at the moment?

Hey James, I've just dropped you a sub. It looks like Wales might have missed the brunt of the storm. I had planned to head to the Peaks, but the aftermath of it caused chaos up Sheffield/Derby way, so all my trains were cancelled. Look forward to your next video.

Hey man. Thanks for the comment and the sub. Massively appreciated. I've had harder nights in a storm without a name :-) .

Haha, it was pretty high up, and was rain water that had pooled around a rock. There could have been sheep wee in it but it would have been very very very watered down by the heavy rain :-)
@deaneager
@deaneager 11 месяцев назад
@@thegreatoutsiders maybe the soapy-saltiness of the Firepot Beef Stew was actually the sheep wee in the puddle water 😁
