What would happen if you rotated the coin 90 degrees for the second pass? Would it get rid of the lines?
@booterone1
@booterone1 10 месяцев назад
exactly what I was thinking, LOL, a checkerboard on a Kennedy half
@ResinDragonStudios
@ResinDragonStudios 10 месяцев назад
Great question! It is called Crosshatching. What it will do is laser going both directions making it look a bit smoother tricking the eye that the lines aren't there. But it will in fact still leave lines. Under a scope you'd see small checker like boxes. The coins will forever be considered damaged by graders for this too.
@HueMongussD
@HueMongussD 10 месяцев назад
@@ResinDragonStudios I 100% agree. I'm big on never cleaning coins. I was suggesting it as part of his little lab experiment. 🤣
@HueMongussD
@HueMongussD 10 месяцев назад
I would experiment more with the laser. Try to make the laser a tiny bit out of focus to see if it would make the lines less sharp. Like a dithering effect.

This laser is intended to engrave wood , mark tile and glass, or painted metal tumblers: it doesn't even use the same frequency as the lasers designed to clean off rust or paint. Those lasers do cost 10 or 20 times what this unit costs.

Interesting experiment....but even a common coin shouldn't be cleaned in my opinion. Thanks for the video Seeker!
@Winslinator

What if you reduce the power of the laser to a sweet spot percentage which is able to etch through the gunk and corrosion but not into the metal itself? I'm thinking about this from a materials hardness perspective (like how copper, gold, and silver can scratch lead but not steel), and wondering if the concept is translatable to lasers as well.
@mossig
@mossig 10 месяцев назад
Put the coin on a turntable, lower the power output and you should avoid cutting lines on the coin and get a better finish by only removing the grime. Would be cool also to see if it could vaporize a coin completely if you go over it a thousand times. And don't worry about those crazy numismatics. Just threaten them to put a coin on the train track if they don't behave.
@scorpio4236
@scorpio4236 10 месяцев назад
Wow this would be great to clean coins found using a metal detector. Would love to see what it does to a really crusty wheat cent. Most people use a rock tumbler to clean the coins found but it still leaves them tarnished.
@maxwellgordon9782

I'd be interested in seeing what lasers are able to do in the next 3-5 years. I bet they'll improve so much to a point where they won't leave those lines, or in a much finer way.
@GOLD_FEVER
@GOLD_FEVER 10 месяцев назад
A lazer by definition has to leave lines. If power is lowered so that it "only takes off the layer of grime" it will take forever to do its job, but the power of the lazer is what is making the marks. Besides, if you really wanted to remove the lines you could just rotate the coin and it would probably fill the lines in.
@Mr_Zimm
@Mr_Zimm 8 месяцев назад
Actual cleaning lasers will not leave lines. This is a craft fair laser and a fraction of the price of a big fiber or co2 laser for this kind of work
@MrRedsjack
@MrRedsjack 8 месяцев назад
I was told that if you put the laser a bit out of focus and increase the number of passed as well as the direction of the passes going left to right up to down and than the 2 diagonals rhe result is that the lines are practically invisible even under a lens but it is less powerful so a lot of passes are needed

If the you kept alternating the coin's position to help remove the lines, would the coin ever get destroyed, or is it limited to removing the outer dirt?

@geoffhubbard7815

If you keep the resolution high but slightly defocus the laser, you can avoid the rasterization; it may be harder to surmise laser damage after that for someone who didn't know the history of the coin... worth a try, anyways to see if you can find a way that 'works'

OOh, I’ve got that same laser and have had some real fun making my own coins with it using blanks from Amazon. While it won’t engrave it will MARK quite nicely and will do multiple grey shades. Give that a go while you’ve got it! Ah - never mind. You answered that near the end, LOL.

@JBrierley02
@JBrierley02 10 месяцев назад
It vaporizes. There is a pretty powerful fan in the back and the tubing takes it to the other device, which is a hepa smoke purifier. You can run it without the purifier but you need to (should) vent it outside. The purifier lets you do it inside and does a fantastic job - you can cut acrylic with it, for example, and not smell anything.

@@rufferto5429. I haven’t tried using tinfoil. I’ll have look that up. I put roughly 6 cups of water in a sauce pan. Add about 1/2 cup of white vinegar, 1/4 cup of baking soda and maybe a teaspoon of salt. Put coins in pot. Boil for roughly an hour or more. Rinse and dry. I forget who I learned this from but it works well for me. Hope that helps.
