Wild Wild West--best villains ever!

Clips from the first four Season Two episodes of Wild Wild West. These four episodes might very well represent the greatest collection of entertaining villains that ever appeared on television--each of them portrayed by an excellent character actor who brought just the right level of Ham to the roles:
"Night of the Eccentrics" 9/16/66--Victor Buono as Count Manzeppi
"Night of the Golden Cobra" 9/23/66--Boris Karloff as Mr. Singh
"Night of the Raven" 9/30/16--Michael Dunn as Dr. Loveless
"Night of the Big Blast" 10/7/16--Ida Lupino as Dr. Faustina

Vastly underrated series way ahead of its time. Dunn's Loveless ans Buono's Count Manzeppi were beyond brilliant. Bob Conrad also underrated.

Count Manzeppi was my favorite. Victor Buono was one of the drollest thespians who ever lived, could make reading a phone book into a dramatic tour de force. He should have been in more episodes. Some of the other villains I liked who don't appear here are Edward Anderson as Brane and Jeff Corey as Captain Coffin. I wish Vincent Price could have shown up, he would have been perfect!
@sdovas

Dozier could afford Price for Batman (Egghead, anyone?) in those days, no telling why these guys couldn't or wouldn't.
@calvinkatt662
@calvinkatt662 5 лет назад
I also really liked Manzeppi. He appeared twice during the second season. He was the show's only reoccurring villain, other than Loveless. Based on what I've read, there were changes behind the scenes for the third season and the new power-that-be didn't care for Manzeppi, so we never saw him again. Buono did appear in the More Wild Wild West reunion film years later, but he played a different character. I wish it had been Manzeppi.
@LordZontar
@LordZontar 5 лет назад
You also notice that Count Manzeppi always seemed to be just a step ahead of West at nearly every turn, and also didn't suffer from the same egotism and frustration complex that plagued Dr. Loveless.

Robert Conrad was probably one of the most athletic actors in television history. It is amazing to watch the choreographed fight scenes. He was in Tip-Top shape and he really showed it off when he would climb and do all kinds of physically challenging things seemingly at ease. Interesting to watch how he went from a martial arts fighter in season 1 to a fist fighter in Seasons 2 to 4. He also had a character change from season 1 forward. There was a lot of females falling for him and kissing him and season 1 and that pretty-much faded except for maybe seven or eight episodes in every other season. What a great transition from the black-and-white days to season 2 to 4 in color. Both Conrad and Martin we're dressed very sharply but especially Conrad with his three-piece colorful suits. There's never been another actor who relied on his physicality so much and was able to pull it off with seemingly ease. I think that's why the movie version with such a disappointment.. they could never find another motion picture actor they could do all the stunts and the fight scenes that he did. I wonder if anybody will ever try again so we can wash the memories of the poorly conceived Wild Wild West movie from our memories. I did think that Kevin Kline was a good choice as Artemus Gordon.

Ah, I'd forgotten just how over the top this great old show was. Haven't seen it since it originally aired (which tells you how old I am). Great villains, great characters, great concept, great "kink," and I especially love Pryor as that surprise guest in the 1st clip before he went full-on to do stand up. The producers always claimed they were semi-scrupulous about only using technology that actually existed in that era, (obviously they fudged it a little bit) but it was always a great concept. Also amusing in that 1st clip how the low special effects budget shows because once the camera moves the glow from the light bulbs on the floor disappears completely.

I still remember as a young child in the 70's growing up and being fascinated by this series and it's stories along with Hogan's Heroes!! My mother would tell me as a teen in the very early 80's that these two shows were the only 2 shows I would stop wherever I was doing 5 mins before the show's started, sit down in front of the TV, and patiently wait as I watched quietly through the entire episodes. Now in my mind 50's, I realize just how imaginative these two series and thier stories really were! I espically remember the character of Dr Loveless! One of not THE most memorable villains in all of TV history for me! Now my 12yr old and 17yr old sons look at these series and thier episodes as very boring and dated. Yet today I still get to remember and feel like a young boy again as I get to watch all these episodes from these two shows on You Tube all these years later.. Rest in peace Michel Dunn, Robert Conrad and Bob Crane! You three actors will always have a fond place in my childhood heart for the rest of my days! Thank you for helping me feel those feelings again all these many years later!👍😃

Watching this show all the way through for the first time with my father. Doctor Loveless is absolutely brilliant, I'd argue downright revolutionary for his time. A villain whose motivations are arguably noble save for the monsterous ways he goes about to achieve them, from the very first episode where he goes from killing a fellow scientist for attempting to deliver the formula for the atomic energy to the Untied States Government because they would use it as a weapon, to threatening to blow up the streets of San Fransico if he doesn't receive the land stolen from him by the Spanish Empire, simply because he wats to turn the land into a technological utopia. These motivations set him far and beyond his mustache twirling, monologuing villains who grandstand egotistically about their plans to take over the world. Bravo to Michael Dunn, an absolute powerhouse of malevolence and charisma.

One of the scariest villains in the B&W episodes was John Dehner's "terminator" like figure. Years before Arnold's Terminator. "The Night of the Steel Assassin" where Dehner's imposing character Torres was a man built of steel and virtually bullet proof even his face. It was great because in this episode even West appeared scared when Torres was impervious to bullets. A well-written episode also -- the end -- no spoiler -- has a twist and is quite good in only "The Wild, Wild West" could be. The TV show also managed to secure some top rated actors and actresses from both motion pictures and TV: Michael Dunn ("Ship of Fools" nominated for an Academy Award); Robert Duvall; Boris Karloff; Agnes Moorehead; Ida Lupino; Patrice Munsell (opera singer); Carroll O'Connor (before "All In the Family") and Victor Buono and countless others. It was during this time that stars as big as John Wayne made the rounds of tv shows. You don't see that today.

I loved "The Wild Wild West" when I was growing up (and after); but there can be no doubt about one point. The hardest thing to believe about the stories wasn't the futuristic devices that Jim and Artie used; it was the question of how on earth Jim could fight the bad guys at his superhuman level while wearing those inhumanly tight pants. ("Saturday Night Live" could have done a great skit -- especially with Robert Conrad hosting -- of Jim giving the villains his tough-guy talk, and then trying to swing into action: only to find that he couldn't move because of his pants.)

So sad to hear that Robert Conrad has passed. Loved this show, it was always a blast to watch. And some of the Sets may have been used in Star Trek TOS because I remember that first scene looks very much like one used previously on "The Squire of Gothos"

I've always thought that the sets for this series had very little dramatic atmosphere, but lots of open space to have the fight scenes take place in. At the 4:30 mark is what I've always thought to be an interesting moment when Boris Karloff makes that walk across the scene. He only had half a lung at the time, but still makes this dramatic crossing. Notice how, at the 4:40 mark, an extra with an elephant crosses in front of the camera to hide Karloff struggling to make it up that step. Karloff loved acting and did it till the end of his life.

I've said for years that James West and James T. Kirk were very similar characters. Strong-willed, handsome, somewhat small in stature, but seemed to love to fight, loved the ladies, quite resourceful, the list could go on another 3 or 4 seconds.

That bolero jacket and the tight pants attracted the ladies to the show! Conrad wasn't playing gay. West was a ladies man when there was a beautiful woman nearby but put him in a barroom brawl with 15 other bad guys and he would invariably come out the winner, it seems like he never wasted a move! robert Conrad was a man's man in real life!
