In episode seven of Wild Women Healers we meet, Jessyka Winston, Vodou Manbo and founder of Haus Of Hoodoo, a spiritual oasis in New Orleans. We met up back in September of 2018 to film the first half of this video where Jessyka shares a bit of her story of how she started sharing her gifts with the world and following the bread crumbs back to her ancestral path of Vodou. High Priestess meets The Empress, Jess is an inspiring example of what it means to live your practice and your magic every single day, she also reminds us that we "are always on the path" no matter the detours.

As an african person, there is soo much self-hatred I have to personally overcome to accept, use and share this type of healing. I am called to know more about my ancestors original religion and healing practices but uprooting demonizing colonial ways of looking at myself and my people has to come first! Thank you for this!

It’s a journey for sure. Just remember everything they make us hate about ourselves is what they envy. Learning about our history not the white washed history definitely helps. We are the definition of resilience and power. It’s just a good portion of us are brainwashed into thinking otherwise.

But 7 years ago, I will say the Ancestors whom the bible calls angels took me out of church and since then I set up Ancestors Altars in my home and never went back to church.

People of African Descent from all over the world may call it something different from us here in the USA. Voodoo is a religion out of West Africa that many of our ancestors brought to the new world due to slavery. Hoodoo is a name created by Diaspora Africans during slavery in the USA.

When your lineage is all oral like many of the West African diaspora is, things go by many names so its hard to know which names are similar or hold like values

Hoodoo is separate from Voodoo. Hoodoo was developed by Black Americans in the North American US southern states. It was not created by Dominicans. Dominicans have their own tradition and they don't call it Hoodoo and I am literally pissed right now that she didn't clarify the origins of Hoodoo.

This is so inspiring! I am a spiritual healer and deep tissue massage therapist of 23 years. I have created my own craft and 3 hour Multi-Dimensional Healing Sessions, upon instructions from the spirits. It is so beautiful to meet another strong woman doing Spirits service just like me. But she has way more energy to create an empire. I would love to have a store with hand made tools for prayer but I just don’t have the energy like she does. However, Hoodoo is not Dominican and I don't know why she is using that name. Hoodoo is a tradition that Black Americans from the North American/ USA southern states did. That is our African based tradition. It has nothing to do with Dominican bruja power. O.K. And I"m really pissed off that she is using our tradition's name and not once mentioned the origins of Hoodoo originating in the USA, not the Dominican Republic.

Though Voodoo isn't my spiritual tradition, I can relate to so much of her story and frame of mind. My family history has been fragmented in many ways and I'm finally getting around to reconnecting with my own ancestors. I've maintained a connection to my magic and witch-self throughout my life despite it not being a family tradition. It's really validating to hear her talk about her spiritual life!

I just recently realized what root work is and that I probably have been doing it all along. I make soaps,oils, herbal bath soaks. It is so relaxing to making soap especially. I've healed skin problems with my soaps. I guess it's official. I'm a rootworker.

Truly inspiring. I love what she said about not letting the connection with your spirits grow cold. I've been guilty of doing this due to depression, lack of motivation which is a by-product of depression. It inspires me to reconnect with my ancestors, my roots, my spirits.

Having been to the interior of Haiti for a Vodou pilgrimage, where I was warmly embraced by vodouisants--Mambos especially--it was one of the most moving experiences of my life. They encouraged me to embrace my own spiritual nature, connection to Nature and the elements, and to my ancestors. I will never forget it. Having been all over the world, among many First Nations, among many healers and elders, the message has always been the same. For me, it is Yemaya, La Sirene, Stella Maris. Melusine.
