There is a fungus that grows on dead beech trees, called beech fungus. It looks like a large saucer growing at right angles to the trunk. It's hard and woody. You collect one or more of these - you'll need to belt it with a stick or a hammer to remove it. Next break it up into small pieces about 2"x1", You might need your hammer or a saw for this. It is quite tough. When you go camping you put three or four pieces on a rock, or a metal plate at the entrance to your tent (or camper van) and light it. It will not burn, it will smoulder for quite a long time, giving off a not unpleasant smelling smoke. This deters midges, mosquitoes, clegs (horse flies) and anything else that flies and bites. Best thing is it's free and you made it yourself. I live and camp in Scotland. I use this every time.
This is absolutely awesome advice I love it !!!! I'll be sure to try this 100% ! That's for the detailed Info and thanks for watching much appreciated ATB Simon
Midges are an absolute nightmare, I’m just so glad we don’t get them on the east side of Scotland where I live. I remember being in Ullapool at dusk once and there was a massive cloud of midges that suddenly appeared and everyone and I mean everyone ran for cover.
It's hard to beat mate isn't it. Even when I was tent bound ut was still beautiful looking through the mesh at the mountains. Thanks for watching as always mate much appreciated ATB Simon
Afternoon mate. Loved this. That's a canny tent mind. I was thinking of getting a cheap one for me and Riley as he doesn't respect my good wildcamping tent 😅 . Glen etive my fave place. Nice one lad. Bloody midges .....awful. when we were at glen etive in May I couldn't sit out at night they were so bad
Hi emz.. how ya doing.... hey this tent would be ideal its class and cheap!!. Loads of room too.....and the bug mesh keeps the terrorists out 😅. It's such a lush spot but my god those midge really screw it up . Thanks for watching emz..... xx
I needed to reality check myself as soon as i said it 🤣👍. Thanks for watching much appreciated and for the support with the sub welcome to my channel mate. ATB Simon 👍
My Mum and Dad once camped down by the lake in Kielder Forest in Northumberland. They paid for two nights - the woman at the campsite did say "oh, people usually just stay one night" and as dusk fell they found out why. Thick clouds of midges, starving and voracious. My Mum and Dad saw two Japanese tourists running -screaming and flapping- from them. In DECADES of being a camping club member it is the only time EVER my Dad literally picked up the tent poles, canvas and all and threw it in the boot. (They didn't stay the second night).
🤣 yeah it's absolutely terrible for midge I don't live too far from there...its so beautiful but can be terrorised. Thanks for watching much appreciated ATB Simon
I am used to fishing for hours on end with the dreaded midge, you need repellant and a good midge net i use life systems myself,i dunno if it would be practical for camping but i find an electric fan is far better than any citronella candle.
Sound advice mate love the idea of a camping fan 🤣👍👍🏴. Yeah iv done my time to fishing with midge.... horrific at times eh. Thanks for watching much appreciated ATB Simon
Lol ... the midge .. a fact of life in the highlands ... a midge headnet or indeed a midge jacket is an essential a d youve just got to get on with it :) . Suprisingly they didnt really appear until the end of July this year due to the hot dry weather, at least north of the great glen where i live. Fires grate with me ... imagine if everyone had a fire, visually, like litter, angry landowners .. Scottish code of conduct ... leave no trace . Midge coils inside the flysheet will disperse most. Lovely enthusiastic style .. love it ... off to watch some more on your channel
Iv been exploring Scotland for over 20 years and been luck enough to cover your land but never have I experienced midge like this.... unbelievable!. I'm with you there !! The fires are a disgrace!!! The scorch marks and broken glass plus litter is outrageous 😡. Iv spoke to many wardens who say it's getting worse. Such a shame....I'm forever picking other folks litter up. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment it's appreciated pleased you enjoyed my vids ATB Simon 👍🏴
Well, there's apparently a bumper crop this year, with a "second surge". Just back from Arisaig today, mostly a breeze bit very still this morning putting the tent away... the little b*ggers! I've tried everything, skin so soft, deet, even a new contraption this holiday called smoking midge... ok, but only lasts about 15 mins... Had to resort to the trusty net on the head. Still some got in... plenty bites on my arms. They're horrific
Aye I've heard that ! Worst it's been in ages.. Arisaig is bloody unreal....I went there first after getting the ferry to mallaig and it was rammed with people hence why I landed here. Nowt stops them other than a breeze eh ....? Thanks for watching much appreciated ATB Simon 👍🏴
Great video’s mate though it’s put me off Scotland and wild camping. I’ve just recently bought an e-bike and was thinking of going bike packing and liked the the look of both tents you demonstrated good luck on your adventures and stay safe👍
Ah mate pleased u like the vid.... don't let that spoil Scotland for you.... its only really the summer months and with a slight breeze it's fine 👍👍👍thanks for watching much appreciated ATB Simon
Ah man the midge is a killer!!! Aye can imagine being out on the Loch on a SUP would be different 👍👍👍🏴. Thanks for watching much appreciated ATB Simon
A fire is a great way to keep the little sods away. Other than that make sure to ALWAYS keep the tent closed up unless you have to enter or exit and make sure you do that quick as. The slow burning coils that give off a repellant smoke are pretty good, but position them in the tent doorway for best effect. Have still had to move camp a couple of times even despite this advice.
Yeah smokey fire helps a little doesn't it. I was moving so fast in and out of the tent I even surprised myself still nee good 😂.... thanks for watching much appreciated 👍🏴 ATB Simon
Great video and fair play sticking it out but why on earth would you not be aware of the midges season in the highlands of Scotland when visiting? then camping next to a river. lol Smidge spray and a net required at all times during Late May through to July in some of the best landscapes in Britain.
🤣🤣🤣 ah mate I'm well aware of them. There was a nice breeze to start but that soon changed. Find smidge and deet etc never work. Thanks for watching mate ATB Simon
If hiking or camping in Scotland in summer always come prepared for the midgies. Get a head net And good repellents. And pray for a bit of wind...... they don't like the wind.
Wind.....that's all that works isn't it 😂...iv tried everything nothing seems to work....skin so soft possibly helps a little. A stiff breeze always works 🙏 Thanks for watching ATB Simon
Another Great video Simon 👏 oh the dreaded midgies 🦟 I hate the wee buggers 🤬 people used to swear by Avon's Skin so Soft but I think 🤔 the formula has changed over the years 😢 nothing I've tried stop's them 😢 I'm itching now just talking about them 😂 atb Brian 👍
Hi mate thanks for tuning in much appreciated 👍. Ah man absolute killers aret they !! Aye think you're right skin si soft is possibly the best but still naf !! Lived to tell the tale anyway 🤣🏴 ATB Simon
Hi there. I have just found your channel and watched your midge nightmare. I have liked and subscribed because I enjoyed your content. We had an experience like that twice up two different places in 2 weeks, with flying ants. We were COVERED IN THEM. EEEEEEWWWWW.
Hi 👋....thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing....mostly I'm pleased you enjoyed my video. The midge are a real problem but sounds even worse with flying ants too ☹....I feel itchy just thinking about it. Thanks again ATB Simon
@@YONDERMOUNTAINADVENTURES That had us both screwing our faces up and feeling for you!! Also I came up with a new word - midgerable! What a midgerable experience in such beautiful surroundings! Here's to a more bearable experience next time. Coming from Cumbria myself, I know all too well what those little bastards are capable of!
@@joinmeoutdoors midgerable!!!! That's exactly what it was mate....horrendous. this was the worst iv seen in all the years iv been up there. Tha ks for for watching both of u much appreciated! Can't wait to see your next bike camp vid 👍👀 ATB Simon
I had to laugh at the next morning bit with you all covered up and having to wipe your face constantly. Been there so many times. I think the last time I was on that road, I stopped for a minute to take some pics and had to abandon the idea and get back in the car. Something about that area is perfect breeding ground for them. When I used to night fish with my old man, he used to light up a cigarette if they got bad. They hate the smoke. And I guess it was a good excise for him to have another smoke. That was the one time I did not mind the smell of cigarette smoke.
🤣 don't blame you for laughing mate hahah.... I wasn't at the time like but am now 🤣👍. You're right about Glen etive man it's the perfect breeding ground for them. Ah OK so start smoking mate that's the secret hahah..... thanks for watching much appreciated ATB Simon
Aah mate i feel your pain. When we lived up there in 2018 the midges were awful. Literally couldn't leave the house without being Smidged up and wearing a head net every day. It was a particularly bad year apparently. We've just invested in the Flextail Tiny Repel but not had chance to use it yet. Only £40 quid though and small enough to pack for wild camping.
Hi mate hope your both well 👍👍. Well if anyone knows midge its you guys.... iv heard about the repel thing wonder if its worth a punt for next summer. Thanks for watching ATB Simon
My first online bird was from Glasgow and she said to come up north to visit and we would go camping up the highlands and I'll see some midge too. I thought she said minge so of course I was ready to rumble in a tent. Trust me for not listening. I got 6 trillion bites in 6 hours and got no minge
Bloody Midges Simon 👹 they don't get much worse than that. I was fishing on Blyth pier last night with no wind and they were there the little Twats 😂. Enjoyed your craic when you were sitting outside the tent but you were telling Porkies when you said it was windy, I was watching the clouds and they never moved a millimetre 🌥️😂. Must admit I was taken aback when you give me a Shout out, I feel rather humble but really appreciate it. Strange seeing me on your TV.. Great vid again Simon, keep it up 👍👍👍 Atb Graeme
On blyth pier Jesus christ !!! There is no escaping them.....u seen they are making a horror movie about them !! 🤣 true story.... mate started with a breeze the nowt....total nightmare 🤣🏴👍. May re think WHW for Oct may leave till Nov. Shoutout was my pleasure mate me and Dangerous Dan always love your vids ur often on our screen mate. Thanks for watching ATB Simon
@@YONDERMOUNTAINADVENTURES I couldn't guarantee no midges in October but I really think it'll be fine. You are cutting down on daylight too for walking and will probably be colder and wetter in November. Is Dan going with you?
