In this video I will do another boil test on the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove that Dave Canterbury, from WildernessOutfitters, sent me to play with. This time I'll use the Evernew Ultralight Titanium Cross Pot Stand instead of the pot stand that comes with the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove because I think the pot stand might be a little to tall.
The Evernew pot stand fits perfectly on the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove but the distance between the burner and the pot bottom is a little short. In this test I'm using MikeSr39's suggestion to, "take the Everest potstand and turn it upside down,(just a thought) should make it even higher."
I've used the Evernew pot stand on a Trangia burner in my video, "Using a Trangia Burner with an Evernew Titanium Cross Stand" ( • Using a Trangia Burner... ). In the video I test the Evernew pot stand, both right-side up and up-side down to see if there are any differences in the boil time. Well there was.
Using the Evernew pot stand right-side up , which makes the distance short of one inch, the boil time for two cups of water starting at 60° was 7 minute(s) 38 second(s).
Using the Evernew pot stand up-side down, which makes the distance one inch, the boil time for two cups of water starting at 60° was 6 minute(s) 36 second(s).
So, we'll see what happens.
MightyCamperJohn asked what several other people asked, "....Will the Tiranga smother/damper ring fit on this stove? Are the cap diameters the same as a trangia, I.e. are the caps interchangeable? Does your improvised smothering lid fit over top of this stove's normal cap? Lastly, will this stove fit inside the firebox Nano folding stove, and if so how well does the burn height work on that one? Thanks again, John"
oldgeekster1 suggested, " Hiram, on the subject of snuffing out the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove - I'll be using an old Esbit simmer/snuffer ring ... the kind with the little folding wire handle on it. Playing around I just discovered that wire handle will just fit in the open slot on the pot stand, permitting you to snuff out the fire with the stand in place."
Thank you, MightyCamperJohn, oldgeekster1 and everyone else, for your comments,
and thank you all for watching my videos,
Hiram

I used the 1/2" square cage wire to make and use for the 1" sweet spot, but if you take one row of the holes away, you will be on the 1" sweet spot. just my opinion when I tested the stove.

Thank you Hiram for the quick answers. As somebody else also asked I was wondering about the other firebox stove, the smaller one, called the Nano. Interesting about the cube stove too, thought the height might be pretty close on that one as well. Thanks again. I really enjoy the thoroughness of your reviews.

You've probably already corrected this, but that wasn't the firebox nano stove. What is the diameter of the pathfinder burner?

The first time I used my Pathfinder alcohol stove, I made the mistake of using 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. It burned with a yellow flame, wouldn't bloom, and blackened the pot and the stand with massive amounts of soot. I then read on YT that the proper fuel is Denatured Alcohol, available at any hardware store. That made a huge difference. Now I get a quick bloom, an almost pure blue flame, and no soot. Lesson learned. It would have been nice if the stove had come with a small piece of paper saying that.

I'll admit that when I'm busy sometimes, I just read the notation on the lab and forego watching the video. Your notation for this test states that the boil time was 6m 42s...may want to edit that. I was super excited when I saw it. Thanks again!

I really like your tests and have watched most if not all. I am curious also about the 1/2" hardware cloth stand with a " flame gap. Looking forward to your future vids. Thanks

Evernew makes another cross pot stand that's taller at about the one inch height from the jet holes.

Sorry Hiram, that is NOT the firebox Nano stove, unless they are calling that stove the sameas the Nano.

I believe MightyCamperJohn was asking if it fits in the Folding Firebox nano. I would also like to know this. I Think the one you showed was the "cube stove" that FFB sells also. Also in your last vid you talked about how the brass of the Trangia gives some thermal feedback into the stove which causes it to burn hotter. I was thinking, what if you made a little Pot Cozy (with reflectix) to go around the Pathfinder stove. That might help warm up the unit and get some thermal feedback.Thank you so much for doing these vids!

to use the simmer ring with wire handel you would need to mod the pot stand with a dremel cut a horizontal slot in stand .5 inch at second or 3rd row of holes

So it looks like the Nano Folding Stove might need testing, as it holds the desired height without transmitting the cold down to the burner. Or so it seems to me. Great testing Hiram!

I would make a potstand out of 1/2in hardware cloth 4 squares high and put it on the inner lip just like the supplied potstand

Hi Hiram- I was wondering if part of the issue with the evernew crossbars was due to flame airflow issues, i.e. interrupting the smooth airflow around the outside of the flame, as there appear to be gaps in the flame against the bottom of the pot? I read that the thermal conductivity of titanium is low, nearly the same as stainless steel. I am guessing that the next text will be using an open mesh (like hardware cloth) pot support at the 1" height above the top of the burner.

Since a yellow or orange flame indicates an inefficient burn, have you tried adding holes to better facilitate an oxygen to fuel ratio?

Do you think, turning the Evernew Titanium Cross Pot Stand on the Pathfinder stove with the slots down, the way it was designed, the stove top fit in the slots? From other videos you made where you tested the stand on the Transgia stove with the stand upside down, it may work better, but on the Pathfinder, the stand may need to be on right side up. Stainless steel of the Pathfinder may be affected differently than the what I assume is brass of the Transgia. I don't know. Just wanted to give you a little food for thought and I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

That Pathfinder stove really sucks. Save your money and get the Trangia or the Evernew.

This burner is really turning out to be a big let down. They should have hired you as a consultant before this was ever hit the market.
