Roadkill harms animals, endangers drivers, and costs billions of dollars every year. In Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, wildlife scientist Tony Clevenger and other researchers have proven that constructing overpasses and underpasses for animals decreases roadkill and improves ecological connectivity. Many animals, including deer, elk, grizzlies, moose, lynx, cougars and others, have been recorded using the structures. Although animal crossing structures have been fairly common in Europe for a few decades, there are relatively few in North America. In The United States, the crossing structures that have been built, in places like Washington State and Wyoming, were partly inspired by the research Clevenger conducted in Banff. To create even more of them, Clevenger worked with a team of experts, including ecologist Nina-Marie Lister, to organize a design competition. The competition, named ARC solutions, was held in order to generate more cost-effective crossing designs that are also sustainable and environmentally friendly. The competition generated many new models for animal crossings and Clevenger and Lister hope that highway planners will adjust their approach to structure design based on them.

Big Lover Yes and no. For example we're still the world's biggest producer and consumer of lignite/brown coal (as of 2014) as a country of 80 million. China and India (maybe more) do produce and consume more coal as a whole though. And that is actually only half as much as in the seventies. Still a sixth of the world's production. Also, moving away from atomic power sounds good in theory, but doing so before you have enough power from renewable energy means having to turn to more fossil fuels. Looking at Chernobyl right now, I'm not convinced atomic is worse than fossil fuel for animals and plants. But you are right. Compared to most countries, we in Europe, are almost saints. What I listed for Germany probably exists similarly in several other countries. The middle east pretty much only got where it is now due to fossil fuels, Australia keeps coal mining in disfavour to the reefs and an estimated half billion people in Asia, Africa and South America are burning down woods in unsustainable slash and burn agriculture.

they're expensive and the roads don't have the money to be maintained as it is. So they wont be maintained or replaced in the long run when they decay and we'll have a bunch of ugly decreped bridges everywhere 40-50 years from now. If you want them so bad go donate yourself stop telling politicians to take more of our money at gun point for these projects, or worse yet just building them on debt and passing the bill the the next generation.
@joelike7787
@joelike7787 7 лет назад
LegoSwordViedos hahahahahaha oh my, I should say I'm European so can't exactly relate. But America's under investment in roads and infrastructure from federal and state level is criminally bad. only way to solve that is better allocation of taxed money, and increased progressive tax which America desperately needs to counter rising inequality and poverty
@RoCK3rAD
@RoCK3rAD 7 лет назад
Scott Like increased taxes do nothing, I live in one of the highest taxed places (New York City) and the infrastructure here has been terrible my whole life. The roads are bad, the subway is the worst in the world so taxes do nothing
@joelike7787
@joelike7787 7 лет назад
Really bad example to disprove taxes though, you're using a very specific case there. That problem is with your own State and Major and their failure to under invest, not with the principle of taxes themselves. Plenty of evidence to support high tax countries (like northern Europe) that have incredible infrastructure and governmental services and welfare (and consequently happier people). I've been to New York, and your subway are awful, so dated and old, don't quite understand why it isn't a priority of your officials to tackle.

For all the naysayers here, did you see the capital cost animal collisions have on us?!? $8 BILLION dollars a year! building these structures in that park in Canada reduced collisions by 94% from this video. NINETY FOUR PERCENT. if we estimate similar results for implementation in the US, we'd be saving $7.5 BILLION a year! I'd say that's a fantastic investment of tax payer money. A couple of million on some bridges to save an easy few billion per year.
@jonathanosborne1244
@jonathanosborne1244 7 лет назад
I suspect you underestimate how many miles of road there actually are in the USA. Searching "miles of road in us" shows "There are approximately 4,071,000 miles". It's a lot more than a couple of million of investment and a LOT of people would not be happy if they were forced to have a fence in their front yard and a gate on their driveway to force the animals to the new crossings instead of just crossing the street in front of traffic.
@Yoxorg
@Yoxorg 7 лет назад
Jonathan Osborne mate, they won't be covering every road, just ones in key heavily animal populated areas. When someone says they're installing crosswalks, they don't mean stick them on every US road/highway, they mean in stategic city locations.
@ih8t2lose3
@ih8t2lose3 7 лет назад
Nah bro, we're talking tens-hundreds of billions of dollars
@Yoxorg
@Yoxorg 7 лет назад
ih8t2lose3 even if we're talking $50 billion, there's a 13~ year return on that if we're saving $7.5 billion a year. and why would we do all the bridges at once? I imagine it happening in stages, slowly over time, one bridge at a time. learn from each project and improve the next ones, build them more efficiently from lessons learnt
@jonathanosborne1244
@jonathanosborne1244 7 лет назад
As long as you understand that in that case the amount of damage prevented won't be nearly 8 billion a year since you're excluding a lot of the collisions due to them not being in "heavily animal populated areas". It sounds like your proposal is actually to look at where the strikes are happening and do a cost/benefit analysis that is specific to each case and in this case I agree that this is a good idea to do (although I have my doubts about how many areas will justify the payback).
@stop6578
@stop6578 7 лет назад
Its ironic how constructing wildlife crossings is seen as a bigger issue than the cost of the collisions. Sure, it may cost a leg and a half for its initiative, but it will pay itself in the long run. I don't understand why government agencies like to think about the present and completely disregard the future.

recently in Tucson Arizona, a wildlife bridge was built and there is a lot of controversies because we had to pay a small tax for it. Personally, I think it was worth it and the results have been exponentially increasing saving cars and animals. Animals take time to learn to use the bridges in the sky island ecosystem. So gradually its results have been more prevalent. I believe this was one of the first bridges in the USA and Americans are very stubborn with their money and are slow to change. But slowly I hope it will become more popular and supported. thanks for reading :)

What it would help with is buffalo jams and idiots trying to get up close to them while they cannot move their car. Yellowstone has seen a HUGE increase in park attendance to the point that you almost cannot get through the park and you cannot lodge anywhere near there either. So many tourists making it hard to walk on the footpaths and lots more close calls to people getting almost pushed over into hot springs. I went this year early summer to try and beat the summer rush.... It was packed. The rush just comes earlier every year.

I live in an important animal habitat in the Netherlands called the Peel, there's foxes, deer, wild hogs, ermines and weasels, and a lot of them. The roads here are too small to have them get proper wildlife crossings (though we do have them on highways) but what all the tiny roads have are these 4 sided turning little reflective things. When light from the car shines on it, they reflect, and then due to wind or the cars speed they turn and move. That way wildlife is scared off and they dont get used to it, because it moves around.
