As a Texans fan, Culley just got the 💩 end of a bad situation from the jump… personally I think he did as good as he could given the circumstances… good luck to him

What were Texans expectations. He was without his franchise QB. He should have been given more time so you can truly evaluate whether he is good coach or not.

I watched most of the Texans games.... they were very competitive unlike the Giants or the jets. Culley did a great job navigating through the chaos

Maybe they think they can get a coach that will make Watson stay. Only thing that makes sense. Or they think Watson is leaving either way, so cut the coach for no real reason. Watson wanted an overqualified coach that wasn't getting an opportunity in Bienemy, he didn't want a random "black" coach.

Culley isn't going to complain much simply because: 1. He got head coaching experience that he can use in his career 2. He's getting $22M for one year of work

Marcellus has it wrong. Watson didn’t want a black coach. He wanted 1 black coach and that was Bienemy. They did want to hire him and hoped that hiring Culley would make up for it because they had a good interaction at the pro bowl one year. They never wanted Culley. They knew they were gonna fire him the minute they hired him.

If Watson wasn't going to play after they hired Culley no way he was making it past 1 season even with winning season

The only excuse I can see that would make sense is, they think they have a chance at an upgrade at HC ( Flores, Harbaugh,Leftwich,Daboll...etc).

This went off the rails very quickly once it was realized why Culley was hired in the first place.

I really would love to know what the Texans management legitimately expected from David Culley & this team. They have one of the worst rosters in the league and still fought every Sunday. They’re just gonna hire and new head coach and probably go 4-13 again next season and then what would the excuse be?

Remember two things can be true. David Culley was set up to fail. However he was never going to get a head coaching job. He was in the league for 40+ years, and never sniffed a head coaching job. I am actually happy for him. If you look from Culley perspective he actually won this situation. Nobody blames him in anyway, which is fair. He got a 17 million dollar golden parachute for retirement. This situation is crazy. Houston as an organization sucks. Its starts with ownership then management. But i am glad he got his gold parachute if he chooses to ride out into the sunset

Deshaun didn’t want Culley, he wanted the chiefs offensive coordinator Whiley, they hired Culley because it was what the advisor who used to work for the patriots wanted. I remember the stories all off season last year. He completely mischaracterized the situation. In fact Watson demanded a trade after they hired Culley, come on bruh….

This is like that saying goes... "gotta do twice as good to get half as much". Culley did a good job with tough circumstances but didn't do AMAZING therefore he is gone. Same thing with Brian Flores in Miami. Very small margin for error for black coaches in the league.

Normally these guys are spot on but they have no idea what went on in Houston at all. You can tell that they've never seen a Culley press conference or his awful game management. Plus he's got 22 million retirement package.

It is reported that the Texans owe him 17 million over the next 3 yrs. One season as head coach for the Texans has earned Culley 22 MILLION. I would not call that a failure. Mr. Culley understood the deal and walked away a winner. Do not feel bad for the guy. Most humans could only dream to make this kind of money.

Tuff being a head coach now today, guys like Brian Flores, Caldwell and others shouldn't been let off . Too much pressure and bad for the owner going from coach to coach changes if things don't work out. Some of these owners/gms don't know nothing about football, if you get the right guy, have to work with him and let him do his thing to turn the franchise around. All about trust and respect between a head coach and the owner 💯

Deshaun wanted out before we ever even knew who the coach was gonna be. He requested the trade after the GM hire. He was promised some input on the coaching hire as well as the GM hire.. They even hired a search firm that they paid 500k and when the firm came back with 3 qualified candidates (two of them minorities) they were just like oh wait that New England guy is available? Yeah let’s go with him 🤦🏾‍♂️which is just another in a long sad history of this franchise hiring Patriot castoffs hence the “Some things never change” tweet from Watson. NOBODY wanted Caserio. As a Texans fan it’s extremely frustrating that it appears as if somehow our front office thinks the whole “Patriots South” nickname people sometime use to describe our organization is a compliment. It’s a meme they’re literally insulting our organization yet we keep signing former patriot players, hiring former Bill Belichick assistants, and now even GMs that were formerly apart of their organization. You keep talking about what Watson wanted. and he caused collateral damage. You have to keep in mind that yes he may have wanted a black coach but not just any black coach. He had someone in the pool not Culley and they said NO, so then when he decided not to play they went out and hired Culley. To me that was a spit in the face. It was obvious they just did it to get Watson to play. So the bottom line he still didn't have a say in the hiring process ,

This segment was well discussed; this is a great example of how two intelligent adults can disagree and still have a productive discussion. That being said, I believe that focusing on the skin color of the coach as a leading point of contention is very short sighted ( Wiley pointed this out) and does not allow the listener to get full context. The NFL as an organization employs players at a minimum salary level of 660k (per google) and 78 percent of them are black. The Texans were most successful during the tenure of Rick Smith as GM and took their drop to the cellar when he had to leave. Ozzie Newsome was a tremendous GM in Baltimore for a long time. We need to use these forums to allow all listeners to benefit from them and not alienate any one in the discussion. I believe Wiley did a great job on this topic, although this topic should include the broader context as I discussed above. In the end, there are several considerations that go into decisions like this; if Wiley is correct, then the Texans should not have placated to Watson in that manner ( I am a Texans fan and live in Houston). Unfortunately, the one that has the gold makes the rules and hopefully after the Bill Obrien debacle as a GM, the organization will take a step back, examine themselves and move forward in a positive way. I for one believe the Texans are and have been 'diverse' for some time; the Dolphins actually fired a head coach with pedigree over obvious politics (idiots). Culley is not a victim, he was paid to do a job (like most of us in the US) and will collect the remainder of the guarantee on his contract (unlike most working people because we do not work under contract). If the goal is to reach the Super Bowl, then Culley is NOT your man; he is respectable and did his job to the best of his ability which is all he can control.
