@@JOHN-tk6vl the golden age of pianism is gone forever . The performers today match this. All the performers were special their own way. All true heroic artists. We gave tremendous techniques today but no artistry. No soul.
@@fritzk6435 horowitz is no match. You can find Kempff playing a song and Horowitz playing the same song. Horowitz is no match. Sorry. Sure, he can play the piano. But not at the same level as mr Kempff. In my opinion.
@@paulcapaccio9905 Wibi Soerjadi. A dutch guy (somewhat). Plays the piano as well. You might wanna listen to some of his covers and originals. Perhaps you might reconsider your opinion on today's performers. Because there still are those who do try their best. And in my opjnion Wibi is one of those who does put all of his feeling into the performance. Pls check him out and tell me i am wrong....
I was at a concert in Birmingham Town Hall (UK) in the early 1970's when Wilhelm Kempff played this concerto. I remember his clarity of tone in the slow central section of the first movement, his measured pace at the start of the second movement, and some brilliant playing in the finale. If I could re-live some of the days of my life I would want to experience that day again.
You are very lucky! Kempff is my favourite pianist - he died just before I was born but thanks to technology we can still enjoy his playing today.. it is good that no longer will the great performers of the past ever go unheard and unshared with future generations again.
God, those were the days. Early 1970s, Schumann on the program, Kempff at the piano, Kubelik conducting the Bavarian Broadcast Orchestra, Kurt-Christian Stier as concertmaster, the Herkulessaal in Munich (an easy 30-min. drive from Kempff's home at the Starnberger See) filled with an audience that knew its stuff. All of these people shared a tradition and understood this music. Of course Kempff was the greatest artist in the hall, but the entire environment was conducive to his musicmaking. And that's how we get this unique document.
Kempff is/was for me an unrivalled genius when it comes to romantic/lyrical music. I have always loved this concerto and have heard it many times but when I heard Kempff play it, it was like hearing it for the first time all over again.
This playing if the first movement is definitely affettuoso....e ..grazioso...thus t r u e Schumann....today mostly martial and crudely played alas😢.....however I am privileged to have heard Kempff also in his New Yotk recital....With Gieseking, Cortot, Hess and Novaes the other superb Schumann interpreters, three of whom I was fortunate to have live experienced.😊😅
In 1970 I was a 15 yr old falling in love with Beethoven piano sonatas. I came across the most wonderful recordings of them on Deutsche Grammophon by Wilhelm Kempff. I listened to them for hours and loved his lyrical playing. To think one day I would see videos of him playing. His Schumann is great too. Thanks.
A true collaboration between piano and orchestra, each of which stands as a separate individual. Yet, the piano shines whenever it should be without overshadowing the orchestra.
One of the finest pianists ever - his Schubert recordings and the Beethoven Sonatas are among the finest recordings ever. And his collaboration with the great Yehudi Menuhin of the Violin sonatas by Beethoven are ageless.
That dear old man! I can tell at the end he was pleased with his accomplishment -- as well he should have been. The Allegro vivace may seem a little sedate to our modern jet-propelled ears, but to me it was a great treat to hear this music played so thoughtfully, with such deliberation and with great attention to detail. When it comes to speed my advice to young contest winners would be, "Just because you CAN does not mean you SHOULD."
Yes, speed is not everything. Love to hear Mr. Kempff play Schumann's Concerto. I can hear every notes he play. Not in a hurry. I'm very lucky to hear this.
Hyramess Hiramess well said! The emotion and meaning for the movement is the most important key to me. If some play really fast, they might have lost the essense of music
yeah, i can just imagine how a virtuoso like Yuja Wang would destroy this piece, all pyrotechnics and noise, zero sensitivity, phrasing, voicing, thought. K's forte is always controlled, he does not bang, though there are moments to bang, they are far less than they appear, its a cheap, drug like thrill. his readings are always thoughtful, musical, and with the tenderness of an angel longing for earth.
I clicked on this performance mainly out of curiosity . This is one of my favorite piano concertos. I have watched and listened to many other artists on RU-vid and thought I had picked out my favorite. I thought I would check this out even though it was an old video. With in the first minute I was mesmerized and listened to the whole concerto (out of respect for Mr. Schumann and Mr. Kempff). I heard things I have never heard before. Such clarity and insight in to the music. Well, I now have a new favorite.
kempff played this at just the right tempo. I don't know why, but many pianists today play this as though they have a train to catch. It certainly isn't what Schumann asked for.
Robert Schumann I've eared him for more than 50 years, if I loved his music now I adore it! It's Schumann to the second.Wunderschöne performance. Mario
Yeah, Kempff is wonderul. I heard him do Schubert Fantasy-Sonata in Paris...electrifyiing...the silence, the colors, the transcendental meditation.....even the Parisians "got it."
a great master of the keyboard, and the finest performance of this work that I've ever heard. TY. Kempff himself wrote some piano pieces, including a sonata; once recorded, but I don't know if it's still available
Kempf's phrasings and pedaling in this music, while a bit unorthodox to me, actually makes sense. Certain passages normally played legato by most pianists, he renders staccato and no pedal the effect of which gives out a sense of distinct interpretation. Quite extraordinary if I may. It's mostly evident in the cadenza.
How much like music this sounds, when not raced through at tempi faster than the speed of sound. Quite a refreshing antedote to the insane and unlistenable Allegro Aggressivo of the immensely talented, but musically somewhat wayward Khatia. Buniatishvilli.
To an obvious extent very giving and selfless in [his] interactions with the orchestral players... 3:58 ... lovey interaction, communicative, encouraging, commanding and mutually beneficial. The allegro vivace 21:52 is both inspiring and magnificent... 23:08 ... so wonderful to see a true musician displaying humility and joyful reverence in the presence of Schumann's compositional genius. One often despairs at the theatrics displayed by lesser, banal talents. Kempff 33:38 is an extraordinary human-being.
Einfach ausgezeichnet!
I have always considered him the understated maestro. When playing Schubert, it could be the composer playing to his friends. In Beethoven he has no equals, in my opinion: unless it be Claudio Arrau.
My god. Not technically perfect, not enough tempo, but I can't stop listening to his interpretation. This sounds like an old grandpa telling his love story at his youth to his grandsons.
