My first use of the new Wilkinson Sword Straight Edge Razor, a shavette, was a bloody mess. Many factors may have caused this. My technique, the blade not being inserted properly, the Wilkinson Sword blades themselves? This time I'm doing a dual shave with a Parker PTB and using a Derby blade in each razor. SUCCESS! I'm also using Canada's "Like Grandpa - Lime" preshave oil, soap, and balm. I'm also using my Yingling Brushworks 24mm synthetic.

You have two nice looking shavettes especially that vintage black handle I think it's beautiful I love the heft the thickness the sturdiness and beefy Ness of that handle looks very old school I've used it once today the shave was amazing 👍 but I only have one minor complaint the two resting pins for the blade is too Shallow so the blade doesn't sit on them that easy making the blade alignment uneven so l use something soft to push the blade in to make it even but wow what a smooth shave

Those Derby blades are as dull as a butter knife. Try some Bic Platinum Chrome blades. Sharper than the Derby, not as unforgiving as the Feather.

exactly if I wanted a butter knife and bought a derby razor blade to cut it with I'd be asking for my money back if shaving with them is anything to go by.

I've been using the Wilkinson sword straight razor for about a year. A bit of a learning curve, but I enjoy shaving so much more.

Same here my next shave with it will be my fifth my first 2 were with derby blades the first shave ok the second needed three passes and alot of dry rubbing. I'm using the Wilkinson sword blades now first shave great but plenty of blood shead second very good too not nearly as much blood shead but I love how shaving with it feels. So my conclusion is if your first few shaves don't entail blood shead then you need different blades.

Derby blade's there's your problem right there although I have to take my cap off to you for managing to cut yourself with them😂😂😂 get Wilkinson sword blades much better.

That worked out a bit better eh! I just did a new shavette tips and tricks video and one thing I’d highly recommend from that is when using a half DE shavette, use blades you’re really familiar with. Like, if Astra Greens for example are you favourite blades, then use one of them, I only started experimenting with different blades in my shavette after I had the technique nice and solid. Hello. Both razors are very good and do a great job. Of course, an important factor for a perfect shave is always the user experience. You need to fix the title of the video. It's about the razor Parker PTW. No for PTB.

Can you tell if the Wilkinson is real wood or just plastic that looks like wood? I finde it also confusing that you could move the blade AFTER you closed it. I Always thought that the blade is not suppose to move after it's closed. Isn't that the whole point?

Hey. Thanks for watching! I just rewatched this particular video. I'm definitely going to record another using the WS shavette soon. I'm sorry it's confusing about how the blade loads. Basically there's 2 little nubs in one plate & the notches of the blade rest against them. There's corresponding holes in the other plate and the nubs fit into those. Finally there's an armature that closes, pinching & holding everything in place. My apologies if this doesn't make sense. I'm on the road now & don't have the razor or packaging with me. As for the scales, I'm a assuming they're plastic. They are quite beefy tho if you prefer larger scales. Hope this helps & hope you'll watch my next video where I'll give a much better demo of loading the blade. Kal

@@KalShaves Please don't get me wrong. I know how those kinds of razors work and your explanation was good. But you say yourself that there is an armature that closes, pinching & holding everything in place. But it was after you closed that armature when you used that paper to push the blade further in. So why are you abled to push it further in if it's suppose to be pinched an held in place at this point? Isn't that a sign that the blade isn't held in place correctly since you are still abled to move it and push it further in?

I recorded a demo video showing how to load this shavette a few days ago. It should be much clearly & will be just a few minutes long. I'm aiming to get it edited & uploaded in a few days. I'd really appreciate your input when it's up!

I'm glad you gave it a second try. Nice work!! There are definitely milder blades than those Derby saloon blades. The Derby's will punish you when you if you make a wrong move. For me, the most forgiving half-DE blade for shavettes is the Gillette Silver Blue. Try one of those, and you will get a superb shave with no need for the preshave oil. If you prefer the saloon blade, Shark makes a good, mild blade, ideal for a shavette. Shave on!

Hey Rob! How goes it? Tks for your suggestion! I definitely want to try other blades. I'm actually enjoying shavettes more now and becoming less timid of them. I have a few new shavettes coming in and want to do videos with them.
