You should be an expert after two years, how is it going? I was told to start with the razor flat and then bring up to the angle that you want. It has worked for me so far. Looks like the blade sticks out to much?

I've gotten most of mine online but Sally Beauty does carry some stuff. Walmart carries some Wilkinson Sword, the Gillette DE, and VDH, as well as Poraso. You'll also find many of these at the various drug stores.

The derby blades are easier to put into the wilkinsonsword shavette than the wilkionsword DE blade but the ws blade is worth the trouble it takes to get them in.

Derby blade's there's your problem right there although I have to take my cap off to you for managing to cut yourself with them😂😂😂 get Wilkinson sword blades much better.

Yaaa I tried this out for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been using safety razors for almost 10 years now so when I picked this shavette up I went in thinking I knew all there was to it, took a hot shower and threw some beers back and went to town with it… came out looking like a got attacked by a mountain lion with cuts everywhere and the worst razor burn I got in my entire life. Wanting to give it a second shot tho. Cool video, you got a subscriber !

Had my first shave with my Wilkinsonsword shavette last night no problem with cut's but you need to concentrate to get a close shave I needed 2 passes with afew rubs on aquard places like behind the jaw upper lip and chin but I'd say it'll be a nice shave when I get the hang of it as I was coming near the end. As for blade pressure and holding my shaving instincts kicked in and no problem with cuts or no awkwardness holding. One tip leave the whiskey until you've finished shaving that also lessen's the risk's of cutting yourself. Slánte ás Éireann 🇮🇪🤝🇨🇦

I got one a few weeks ago and stole the wilkinson sword blades for my safety razor I'll be trying it out with my Darby single edge blade 100 for €20 about Tuesday because I want a deasent stubble last shave Friday. Have to admit don't understand what all the passes are about though one round's enough for me and just a quick rub over the rough bits no lather nothing always does the trick.

"Noool! Stop! This blade sticks too far out!" Ouch, years too late 🙈🤕😬. I learned that it is quite difficult to keep the blade in its place while closing the razor. It is especially difficult with a splitted DE but much easier with SE. I personally go with Derby Professional. They are a little bit sticky on one side which helps a lot to keep them in place until the blades are locked. It is a bit of training, and you will develop an eye to see, whether they are too far out or a bit misplaced. The corners of the blade tend to be nasty if you allow them enough space for acting out 😉.

I re-watched the video after using and cutting myself with my Wilkinson sword shavette and i noticed at lest with mine that the two parts that hold the razor move slightly, moving the blade out of place. Im thinking this could be why im getting cut because my Parker never cuts me.

From my personal experience, short choppy strokes make it easier to nick yourself. I haven't used a shavette for very long, but I found long strokes helped me keep my angle and not get cut. But yeah they are tricky to use.

Glad I never watch this until after I tried it. would have never bought It. Sorry you hurt your self. I had the best shave ever with this and have never used one before. I thought it was super simple and it barely had any instructions on it. I absolutely loved it. It can't be that hard if they sell it with no instructions! I had no issues. I see everyone trying to be proper and use a particular grip or something. Just be comfortable and let the razor do the cutting. Have a light touch and cut your hair not your skin. I've had issues with regular cartridge razors and this has been the best and easiest to use for me. I can see what the blade is doing and I can see what is being cut. Take your time . I can't see why everyone is so scared. I thought it was great and It was my first time, I didn't rush and I did as I was told. Stretch skin, short strokes and angle blade, let the weight of your arm or blad do the cutting. It is not that hard. You looked mad uncomfortable dude. That probably didn't help you either. Big up for sharing but it wasn't a bad shave for me anyway infact the best I've ever had.

I just found your video while looking for info on my vintage (circa 1911) Gillette, made in Canada. Mine doesn’t have a serial number or date code. I was very hesitant at first to use it because of how aggressive it’s supposed to be, but after cautiously trying it, it’s become my favourite over my modern Merkur. I don’t have that rough feeling that you described in the video. I just used it on about 10 day’s worth of growth and it handled it like a charm. I also have sensitive skin and the way my vintage Gillette shaved is a tribute to this old design. Maybe our two models were made slightly differently. I used a platinum coated Feather blade, but I think that skin & beard prep make the biggest difference. A balm afterwards is also a must. I wish that I could learn more about my razor but it’s frustrating with so little to go on wrt markings & features.

Hey! Thank you so much for watching my video! I hope you found it informative and entertaining. From what I understand, Canadian and British Gillettes didn't use the same date code system as the American-made Gillettes did. I'll have a look and see if I can find any info. I found the teeth on this razor had much more feel then a modern open comb. And I think the thinner top plate adds to the rougher feel. I'm really happy you enjoy using yours! Have you tried a Canadian or British flare tip? They are among my favourite vintage razors to use. Wishing you all the best! Kal

Same here my next shave with it will be my fifth my first 2 were with derby blades the first shave ok the second needed three passes and alot of dry rubbing. I'm using the Wilkinson sword blades now first shave great but plenty of blood shead second very good too not nearly as much blood shead but I love how shaving with it feels. So my conclusion is if your first few shaves don't entail blood shead then you need different blades.

not nearly enough water to soak your face and beard. Definitely need some pre-shave cream or oil. You're not stretching your skin even close to tight enough. I'd recommend a different blade as well.

Those Derby blades are as dull as a butter knife. Try some Bic Platinum Chrome blades. Sharper than the Derby, not as unforgiving as the Feather.

exactly if I wanted a butter knife and bought a derby razor blade to cut it with I'd be asking for my money back if shaving with them is anything to go by.

Wilkinson sword is a good beginner double edge safety razor and they also make a ok brush. the king c Gillette safety razor is also a good one for beginner's even if its more expensive. for beginner soap i would use proraso, its only 10$ and a tub will last you the year.

I started off traditional WetShaving with the classic samurai Shavette. Using that on and off over the years really made the transition to traditional straights that much easier. I still had to learn to hone and all the little nuances about the different grinds, stropping , and different honing techniques. I still have my classic samurai but I when it comes to Shavettes I really only use my CJB KAMASORI.
