Will A $50 Sub-Zero Sleeping Bag Keep You Alive?
The Browning Endeavor sleeping bag is rated for -20° but it only costs $50 so, will it actually help you survive sub-zero temperatures? Let's find out...
If you live in a cold environment, it's important to be able to withstand a power outage or even a vehicle breakdown when there is suddenly no access to heat. And although having alternate heat sources are an important part of preparedness, depending on the emergency, you might not be able to have a wood burning stove or propane heating unit. However, for $50, you could have at the very least, a sleeping bag that is rated for negative temperatures. But would it actually do the job? In the video, I used an infrared thermometer to try and demonstrate the temperature change from inside of the bag and on the outside surface. And I only spent an hour outside as it was very cold and I was not using any shelter which you would obviously be using in conjunction with the bag. Either way, this was a non-scientific test to give you some insight regarding what a $50 -20° sleeping bag can do.

Consider leaving your mouth and nostrils exposed in cold weather. It’s tempting to cover your face entirely, but you might wake to a cold and wet bag from the moisture of your breath, and drying a bag in cold weather may not be easy, depending on the situation. Bag temperature ratings vary wildly. Some are more official than others, and some companies outright lie. Survival rating is not the same as comfort rating. Thanks for doing this, Magic! 😊

A "puss pad", foam pad definitely helps a lot! It blocks the cold air from underneath. Sleeping on a cot in the elements in -10--30 without one makes a HUGE difference. It does so much to make a good bag, great! Good point!

I'd look for a gortex cover. That makes a bag windproof, water proof and increases warmth. I prefer the military sleep system. It consists of 3 bags. Summer/winter and gortex cover and a stuff sack, the cinces down the bag to a smaller profile.

@@MagicPrepper I live off grid and most nights I wake up at around 1 am and have to put wood into the M1941 tent stove. I'll be up then till almost 3am. Then go back to sleep. I'm retired also, so I end up cat napping during the day, also for a few hours. Currently our winters have been pretty cold . But not as cold as you showed. There are nights where I don't wake up and my sleep system is what I use during the winter. So, some nights the fire goes out and I wake up nice and toasty in the bag in the morning. Some nights the bag is too warm and I must get up and dry off from sweating! I kid you not! I let the bag air out, restart the fire and wait awhile for the bag to dry out. It airs out pretty fast so it isn't wet inside. I do have a second one, as well as extra gortex covers put aside.

Good video! It sounds like the bag did its job. Even in sort of a worst case senerio. I think that you would have been significantly warmer if you weren't laying directly on the lounge chair. Your weight compresses the insulation beneath you, which dramatically reduces its insulating properties. With some kind of pad I think your experience would have been better. BTW, the reference on the fit with your size was helpful. I'm an inch taller then you, and about 10 lbs heavier than you. I have a very difficult time finding bags that I fit into comfortably. I barely fit into the bag that I use now. Also, I find that a wool stocking cap helps me stay much warmer than otherwise. Edit: Well okay! I just noticed half the other comments said the same thing! It was still a very interesting video. I'm sure we've all wondered on a cold night "How well is this thing working anyway?"

Well first, I'd say you always need a pad under you. The bag doesn't have insulation if it's flat. Loft keeps the air. Loft gone: little to no insulation. The foam pad gives you the lost insulation. Temperature ratings are for survival; not comfort. You will stay alive to -20. In a way, you kind of said that. But always remember, you want a foam pad to lay it on. Knowing that, was your back colder than the rest? Good video. Is that temp gage otherwise pretty accurate? Brand?
@MagicPrepper

I didn't notice my back being much colder than the rest of my body. But I agree, you would use a pad of some kind in general. Or at least be inside some type of structure. The temp gage is from NAPA and it works generally. Surface temperature just fluctuates a lot more than ambient.

Kinda non conclusive with your temperature readings. Suggest that you would have had better results if not suspended above the ground on the lounger. Winter sub-zero camping, you need a pad or at least something for a moisture barrier, tarp, wool blanket, emergency blanket, pine boughs, on the ground, not suspended. This bag inside of an emergency sleeping bag, and you would be able to survive -20 no problem. In a building or vehicle, no problem. A stocking cap is an essential heat saving piece of clothing for winter. Down filled bags are the warmest, but if they get wet, they are worthless. I think for $50 bucks, this is a good cold weather bag at least to 0 degrees, -20. You better know what you're doing, or you will freeze to death. True arctic bags use a 2 bag system. I've used older military arctic 2 bagbag systems and rated at -40. The outer bag is heavy-duty canvas filled goose down weight about 20 lb. The inner bag is also filled with goose down, mummy bag about 4lb. I still have and use the inner bag. It's over 60 years old. In fact, it may be older than me. I'm 71 and totally avoiding sleeping in -20 degree weather 🙃

A 'good' nights sleep is 'critical' in a survival situation. It is 'needed' to regenerate the body & mind for the next days work. And because a person is IN a 'survival situation', there is also an increase of STRESS draining on the body & mind... If your not 'comfortable' your not going to sleep well (I'm talking REM sleep). It only takes 2 to 3 bad nights on a person where they are in the same situation as being DRUNK. And Drunks make bad decisions.

Yeah, I'd say 50 bucks vs freezing to death is worth 50 bucks.

Normally I have noticed that quite a few bags fall short of their ratings but this can be overcome by also using a liner or regular blanket inside and of course something to insulate you from the ground. I have an extreme cold weather bag that uses a liner combined with an inner and outer bag and have been toasty at -40. Just make sure you do not sweat - interesting video.

Bought two of these bags, they kept me warm down to -18° ,no problem. Had two problems, one the zipper broke two weeks of use, the other, my nose got frostbite, as it was the only thing exposed. The other bag is kept in trk. I bought a wool blanket to go inside the bag for Temps below -20°. The bag is worth having the cheap zipper replaced with a YKK zipper. For the money already bag, for over $200.00, not so much.

Thanks for the info. That was kind of my thoughts as well. For $50? Sure. For MSRP $220? Maybe not.

@@MagicPrepper I bought thee two bags when they were $65 ea. Still no complaints, but I think the zipper problem is the reason for the price drop. I inquired at MidwayUSA, but got no response.

@@Raya14sleep with a light weight baclava or other face covering to protect your face. So what if it gets wet from condensation as it will dry much faster than the bag.
@Raya14

@graywind4326 one can't breathe into the bag , no matter what one is wearing. Wearing wool everything, head to toe, helps control body moisture. My nose was all that was exposed and got bit. -18 was the temp before I fell asleep. I'm pretty sure it got lower, as the inside walls of the trlr were covered in ice.
@graywind4326
@graywind4326 6 месяцев назад
@@Raya14 your face can be outside the bag or at least vent outside and covered by a separate baclava. You want to be wearing a head and face covering appropriate for outdoor temps and to warm the air your breathing. You just want to avoid venting into the bag. Most mummy bags will create a tunnel for your breath to leave the bag and a baffle around your neck area. But you still need head gear on and potentially a face covering. Its just your breath is not being fed back into the bag.

Did you get in your jammies! Great job and test! I like a wide end for the foot room. I can't sleep very good in a mummy bag. I had a excellent military arctic mountain sleep system bag that had instructions on it so you can dry your clothes while you sleep, it worked. Got stolen.

With a good inflatable pad under you that would have done a lot better. The insulation below you was compressed by your weight and not as effective.
