If Steve Cohen wants to pay Alonso and see him break every all-time Mets offensive record and have his number retired one day... it does NOT matter what Sterns thinks is best. Sterns answers to Cohen, not the other way around. The Mets have a rare opportunity to have a player hit 400-500 HRs with and for their franchise. That has value beyond normal contract considerations. If Sterns is the mastermind he thinks he is, then his job is to find a way to make that work with the rest of the roster and with a universal DH as an option later in Alonso's career, they'd be foolish to let him walk.

Yes but only to a degree. At a certain point if Pete and his agent are too greedy I’m willing to point the finger at them. I think it’s fair to say Steve Cohen will make a competitive offer. If there’s a team out there like the Rangers with DeGrom offering stupid money I will not get mad at Stearns (or Steve) if they let him pass.
