To answer the question posed in the title - no, but it certainly may look like he does!
Hello everyone! I've been getting quite excited for the Winds of Winter lately, and wanted to discuss my theory as to what will happen regarding the burning of Shireen Baratheon. What do you think? Is there anything I missed? What do you think of #houseofthedragon so far? Be sure to leave a comment, as well as like the video and subscribe if you enjoy.

I'm not certain Mance surviving is the big reveal for her one chapter. The flames showing her Jon over and over while she prays for seeing Azor Ahai, seeing Jon and a man, a wolf, then a man again is a huge tell. But fun video.

This always makes me so extremely angry at D&D. The burning of Shireen in the show, although based on a completely stupid premise, still was quite traumatic to the viewers. At the same time, the resurrection of Jon Snow was one of the most ecstatic moments for the viewers. Now imagine them happening at the same time, with the former directly causing the latter. What sensation would win, our revulsion over Shireen's burning, or our happiness over Jon's resurrection? This would have been not just one of the greatest moments in the show, but perhaps in television, we would still be talking about it today, with some people defending it because they loved Jon coming back, and others rejecting it because of the horrible cost. D&D had this gold right in their hands, but because they are the dumbest, most talentless washed-up hacks ever seen in the movie industry, they completely botched it. I loathe them so much for this.

Related to this, my favorite Melisandre quote: "a man with a thousand cows gives one to god, that is nothing. But a man who offers the only cow he owns . . ." By this logic, Davos sacrificing Shireen is the most powerful sacrifice that could be made

My suspicion is always that Selyse, who is at the wall and has consumed rather more of Melisandre's Kool-Aid than Stannis, would put the torch to Shireen. The really interesting question is what Wun-Wun would make of this. One of the weirdest moments in Dance was when he met Shireen and appeared oddly deferential to her, as if he recognised her somehow. Would he allow the burning to happen at all?

Shireen could be burnt by the wildlings, simply for her greyscale. The wildlings believe whoever has greyscale should be burnt. It would be an interesting plot twist if the threat of greyscale is effectively removed in the north but explodes in the south, with Jon Con walking around with active greyscale. When I was reading Jon Con's pov I was like, come on dude you have greyscale you should see a maester and quarantine yourself.

My initial thought was always the wildlings burning Shireen & Melisandre on Jon’s funeral pyre as partial retribution for Mel & Stannis burning fake Mance. Mel through her dedication to the Lord of Light embraces the flames & somehow her & Jon rise from the ashes afterwards. Similar to Dany & MMD. But Mel glamouring Davos’ son & doing it makes a lot of sense.

This was really interesting. I'd always suspected Mel might use the bones to pose as Davos while advising Stannis to do something she thinks is critically important but isn't confident he'd listen to if the advice came from her. But I like your theory too. The only thing that gives me pause about it is Mel seems to have taken a softer posture towards Davos recently, as evidenced by keeping his son safely away from the battle to atone for getting his other sons killed. So things would have to get really desperate for her to reverse course and drive a wedge between Davos and Stannis. Lastly, I agree with the other comment about the big reveal being the contents of Mel's fire visions rather than the secret Mance rescue (which is still significant, obviously). There's a lot of Winds set up in them- Jon's resurrection; Jon being Azor Ahai; Jon's "sister" fleeing to him for protection (no, I don't think it was Alys Karstark); Euron being the biggest threat to Stannis (which alludes to him bringing the wall down); the revelation that Bloodraven can see Mel through her fires, which possibly has a sub-revelation that he's not the 3EC since once again he appears as a weirwood...So yeah. Mance is but a piece of the pie lol.

Nice piece! I like the added touch of the Blackwater Burning, being where his luck ran out, as he seems to lose his fingerbones around that time period. The fingerbones that incidentally would create a very strong glamor. What makes this even more plausible is the timing, approx around leaving for King's Landing and the defeat on Blackwater. This is exactly the time period where Davos shows he still has influence over the King, by getting her sent away. She makes a big deal of this. Her influence only grows strong after his crushing defeat. It's almost like, if she did take them, this cursed Stannis & Davos a little bit.

I think it is just as likely that Jon gets "otherised" but since his soul resides in ghost he will be able transfer back into his body and be something like cold hands. This also feeds into the Nightfort lore and possibly that the Starks had a pact with the Others. Now that their is no Stark in Winterfell that triggers the beginning of the Long Night. I don't think Melissandre would do that to Davos. She did save his ass a few times but maybe she knew to keep him alive because she saw the future in the flames.

I still think its possible that stannis himself burns shireen. its important to note that Stannis would have burned edric storm if Davos had not moved him out of his reach. Thanks for sharinng, Quinn. So Melisandre saw an opportunity to steal the bag sometime between Cressen's death and Imry sailing the fleet to King's Landing? Then Melisandre glamors herself to burn Shireen to further her own ends? It's possible. But let pose a few issues... First, Shireen's burning is not yet in print.... and therefore not yet fact. GRRM can do whatever he wants with the story even if he said Shireen would burn during some Q&A. It's not guaranteed. Melisandre, as Davos, wants to burn Shireen in the face of the King's Men. We know most of them consider Davos as a commoner and will not follow him. And what does Selyse say to this? Does she belong so completely to Melisandre that she will allow this? How will Melisandre explain Davos' sudden appearance to burn Shireen and then his presumably immediate departure again? This whole theory makes me think that Melisandre has to openly break with Stannis and Selyse. The only way she does this is if she is now convinced that Stannis is not Azor Ahai reborn and if she's convinced that she can pay for a dragon with king's blood.
@mschell8022
@mschell8022 Год назад

@spideregg

Interesting catch on the fingerbones. That will likely come into play at some point. And, yes, at some point someone will try to burn Shireen. But I think they're going to be for a big surprise. I think she is the "one more" that Rhaegar spoke of in Dany's visions. She has dragon dreams. Unlike Dany, with whom btw she shares the title Princess of Dragonstone, who has always been told stories of how wonderful dragons are, she has been told frightening stories of them. The only cure for greyscale that seems to be mentioned as being effective is boiling water. Having boiling water poured over the head would kill a normal person. The damage to her scalp may also be George's way of hiding her true hair colour. Wun Wun's reaction to meeting her. He drops to his knees and says "Kneel Queen. Kneel Queen." A very odd reaction for the proudest of the Free Folk. I believe that a much younger, and presumably smaller Wun Wun was among the wilding prisoners that Alysanne met on her trip to the Wall. He's met a Dragon before, and knows another one when he sees her.

During the Battle of the Blackwater in ACok 58, Davos's Pov, is clearly stated that Davos touches his finger bones during the whole fiasco. He lost them when his ship was destroyed. Some other survivor of the battle might have found the bag, Stannis's men generally fear the red priestess thus the bones got to her by her power of imposing herself on people. The bones also have value because they are a part of Davos, it all, a good guy.

Interesting theory, except for one thing: George said Stannis will be the one giving the order to burn Shireen, therefore such a glamour woudn't be necessary. Besides that, Davos being responsible for the murder of a child would be completely out of character for him, imo. He rejects the idea of killing innocent people for the sake of the realm. He helped Edric Storm escape, didn't he? Why woudn't he do the same for Shireen? Maybe the book quote about the fingerbones is a foreshadowing of some future event we haven't predicted yet. No, I believe that D and D said that Shireen being burned was from Martin. Martin didn’t confirm that it was Stannis who gave the order. How could that happen given that Stannis is a king way away from Shireen? He could send a raven but do you think that Selyse and Mel and the Nights Watch receiving a letter telling them to burn Shireen would believe the letter is legitimate? They would think it’s a trick from their enemies. The order must come from someone close to Shireen: Mel, Selyse, the NW or the Wildlings.

@@umwha George DID confirm that Stannis will be the one responsible for the burning in "Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon" (Chapter 17). How could that happen if Stannis is so far away from Shireen? @@Gabriel-uq6iq I cant find a copy of the book to read online to check but I have found summaries that confirm your citation. It still dosent make sense to me. We also have Mance Rayder's cloak with it's red lace. Then there is the theory that Jon and Turmond switching places with each wearing the other's gold arm bands and sword longclaw. It's possible, not likely, but possible. This gives the author very easy ways of having a unreliable narrator steer the reader in the wrong direction. Not saying he did or has done so, but it is at least possible. Or something like that.

Why would Mel need to burn Shireen, if the resurrection of Beric Dondarrion did not require any sacrifice?
@QuinnTheGM
@QuinnTheGM Год назад
Beric’s first six resurrections required no sacrifice. In those cases, the rite was performed right away. However, in the case of Lady Stoneheart, the rite wasn’t performed for two days, and Beric had to give up his life to do it. Jon was murdered in the dead of night, so it’s likely his body wouldn’t be discovered for some time.

@@QuinnTheGM You have a point here, but I don't think that Shireen will be used to be burned to bring Jon back. She is more likely to have her greyscale back, infesting many men of Stannis and eventually being burned to prevent the spread of this disease.

It is possible that Beric did require sacrifice - remember each of his deaths were in battle, and Thiros immediately revived him . Therefore, the recently slain and dying in battle could have served as the necessary sacrifice

I dont think Shireen is Stannis daughter.... that could be the reason things got messed up when she was killed, she just didnt have kings blood... maybe Stannis simply couldnt have children... maybe Davos was her father, and doomed his own daughter by helping Robert Baratheon´s bastard escape... all four sons of Davos died serving Stannis, and his only daughter(and last living child) is sacrificed cuz he took the bastard with kings blood away.. maybe thats just what i´d expect from George R.R. Martin....

I cam up with a theory but no one is even talking about it. And it's a big point in davos asos chapter...his bones where around his neck he should of drown his bones are lost...its a sacrifice and the drown God saved him... or some God did. A flesh sacrifice made and he lives. He knows he should of died he knows no ship should of been around him to save him...he washed up like patch face come on. Davos is very important he some how talks people into stuff more than anyone and he's a low born smuggler yet somehow important men are swayed easily by his words

While I appreciate this theory, and don’t want to accuse you of outright plagiarism, this is something that has been theorized by fans for years. It’s not right to claim it as your theory as you do at the end. You’re creating good content; this fandom is ravenous, as you know, so just trying to forewarn you about claims to theories which aren’t original to you. Giving you the benefit of the doubt here, but it’s only the second of your videos I’ve seen and it’s the second without crediting previous theories. If you truly aren’t aware, then wonderful work.
@QuinnTheGM
@QuinnTheGM Год назад
By saying my theory at the end, I wasn’t claiming it as my original creation (most of it was, though I did do some research before writing this one). It was more saying that this is what I think will happen as the most likely outcome in the next book. Out of curiosity, what would I credit for this theory? I’ve seen bits and pieces of it referenced here and there over the years, but I’ve never found anything that directly talks about it as I did here.
@ohhhmindy4380
@ohhhmindy4380 Год назад
@@QuinnTheGM I absolutely understand where you are coming from. It’s difficult to remember originators of content and even more difficult to find them when there appears to be more than one person laying claim. I’m not trying to stop you making this content or discourage you AT ALL. I enjoy good content and have been in the ASOIAF space for about 10 years. Reddit is most often where you’ll find these theories, but there are also blogs and other RU-vidrs as well. I’d just caution you to say something about content which may not wholly be your own original thoughts. Maybe say something about how you’ve read/seen similar theories online, but this is your personal take on things. It sort of covers you from taking heat from creators who find your videos and feel affronted. They can be quite protective lol

This theory is verifiably false-George _specifically_ referred to Shireen's burning as "Stannis' decision." Having it play out like this would require a complete last-minute character arc rewrite, or for George to completely abandon the antiwar and anti-extremist themes and beliefs to which he's devoted his entire writing career.
