So interesting how WIll was starting to suspect something was off about Hannibal, but when it was suggested he was offending the man, he second guessed his train of thought. How easily our thoughts and actions are swayed by a perception of rudeness.

I agree. And Will wanted so desperately to please Hannibal , it seems. As a colleague and even as a friend. It's really brought out in the tv series , Will has a quiet thirst almost to be "normal", when he really isn't. Hannibal celebrates the unusual, wherever he finds it, in people, and things.

Hannibal seems so warm and friendly at the beginning of the scene. I've seen people wonder how he managed to stay hidden long enough to build an extensive body count when he's clearly evil in Silence of the Lambs. This is how. Hopkins gives him an approachable, harmless demeanour but once the jig was up, Hannibal didn't need to pretend anymore. Why would he bother going back to his affable old man facade after he's been confirmed to be a serial killer?
@GotoMaki4Micah
@GotoMaki4Micah 4 года назад
i can understand both faces and when the right time to wear them was. but in the tv show he was not really approachable. he seemed emotionless not warm and friendly. that to me wouldn't not help in hiding himself, then when he was revealed he was still reserved maybe he smile couple times. so many people praise tv show hannibal but it was flat. hopkins was allowed to have some life in him. and that works better good ot bad.
@rokukou
@rokukou 4 года назад
Jerrica Benton how you see tv show hannibal depends on how you perceive him. i noticed a lot of emotion in him, he just has subtle facial expressions. he seems emotionless next to will because will is empathetic and emotional. it also may have to do with his accent. i notice people foreign to europe have have more trouble understanding/finding emotion in accents from the lithuania area, especially with hannibal since his emotion is toned down. being from eastern europe, i find his voice just as emotional as, say, jack‘s.

@Tree Fiddy The acting in Red Dragon was much better. Also Manhunter had a terrible soundtrack. It might've been good in the 80s, but that's still not an excuse to just blare it over a scene. And like other's have stated, it's not a remake. They're both adaptions of the Red Dragon novel.
@3hil
@3hil 5 лет назад
@Tree Fiddy I agree, there is something about Manhunter's adaption that makes me like it more than Red Dragon's adaption. I admire Brian Cox's version of Hannibal more, he looks like an average joe before you listen to him speak and what he's in for. I just wished he had more screentime - (Red Dragon's version provides more screentime and visuals; people love Hannibal) Manhunter feels claustrophobic, dizzy, detailed, and focuses on "The Tooth Fairy" and Will more than Hannibal's encounters and experience with Will personally with his older cases. This is why I did not like "Hannibal" that much, Jodie Foster herself turned it down which was disappointing because now we were left with Julianna Moore and it seemed difficult for me to actually feel for Clarice's persona and acts such as the Drug Bust scene. I also did not like the ending, in the original book Hannibal basically brainwashes Clarice into loving him after her injury and even ate a part of Krendler's brain! His fuckin' brain! They never mentioned Hannibal's past either, not even his sister which is truly disappointing because people would always question WHY/HOW did Hannibal become a cannibal? Why is he into/obsessed Sterling so much? Okay, I type too much...Goodbye :D

I love Red Dragon, but Edward Norton never really sold me as the Will Graham from Thomas Harris's novel. He feels the emotional viewpoint of others so intensely that he begins to have trouble telling his own emotions from those of the monsters he's trying to catch. Hugh Dancy did an infinately better job of conveying the character's unstable nature in the first season.

Good point but I did read Red Dragon and Will wasn't fleshed out that much.nor was Hannibal. As stated above I actually like the Bryan Cox Hannibal the best but also like William Peterson's interpretation of Will . It was the first time these two characters were filmed . I really didn't find the TV series realistic but it wasn't supposed to be ! They went forborder Kaka esque surrealism and it worked but it was hard to sustain !

I love Hannibal's reaction/expression upon seeing himself stabbed...those are his arrows, he knows full well they're broad-heads...hunting tips... He realizes he doesn't have much time to finish off Will and get to healing himself...his rush at Will is complete desperation, calculation gone...just a will to destroy this enemy before him as fast as possible before his own injuries don't allow him to... GREAT SCENE!
@erikvonriese

And I like to imagine that a big part of why Graham gets the better of him is exactly because this isn't Lecter's usual M.O. He typically doesn't kill people he respects or is fond of, (preferring to "exterminate" people he sees as irritating or rude), and it's usually a calculated act rather than a desperate maneuver (he didn't know he was going to have to kill Graham until they were already halfway through their conversation). Will catches Hannibal because, for the first time, the latter has been knocked ever-so-slightly off balance.

Its not just that. As will is building up to the revelation the shots move closer and closer to the actors, building up the tension until its a close up of Will’s face, and then because of that when it gives you the far away shot of Lecter you get that sense of deflation, or loss of power, as you put it. Very good editing, I didn’t notice until you pointed it out.

Note that this scene, and the concept of Graham being friends and colleagues with Lecter at all, was invented by Ted Tally for this film(in the books, Will interviewed Lecter due to a distant connection between him and one of the Ripper victims, and figured out he's the Ripper right away). The books are still the best part of the franchise IMO, but very cool that the Hannibal TV show owes its famous twist on the premise to this underrated film. :)
