Would love to see you finish out the gap at the other side of the sofa with the same stained wood! Would make for an awesome very minimal side table like surface, and help to make the whole sofa feel “built in”
What i want to see in part two is a built in that fills the little foot n a half of extra room in that corner. Like something that looks like an extension of the base and gives built in vibes but you could put a little plant or light on? Plz!
If you have the space for it, I think it'd be cool to "split" the sofa and fill in the empty space with a corner table or something to make it look built-in. I think it would be even better if the sofa went all the way to the wall and there might be a lot of wasted space in the corner because it would be hard to sit in such a deep corner and eat. Just a suggestion :) I don't even know if its possible, but I saw that it came in two parts, so I thought I'd say it. I love the sofa for your space!
came here to say this too ! it's so cool already, but i think splitting it up and building a block in the corner like you said would really elevate it even more and also maximize the seating!
I think she might even make another pillow for the sofa and use the same fabric as the chair's pillows to look even more like a unit. I love her videos, always the best ones! ❤️
I think it might be so fun to paint the backs of the chairs the same orange as the sofa or another matching colour. Just to make to more dynamic to look at when in the kitchen etc. But I love the whole makeover, looking forward to part 2!!
unsure about this tbh, but very interested to see how it all turns out in the end! i'm struggling to see the couch as a "built in" right now. it still looks like a sofa on a plywood platform to me, so a bit out of place. but i think that if you put the beadboard/wainscotting along the plywood base and/or add baseboards it would really make it look like it's meant to be there. looking forward to part two!
Love the couch! And I know that old furniture has its own character and history but that peeled off corner on one of the cushions is driving me insane 😭
Litteraly same lol 😥 I kept hoping she would turn it around or switch it for the corner cushion were the edges are hidden, and I'm sure the corner cushion is in better condition on the sides. At least I hope 🙃
Same!!! I love how it's turning out! Those chairs look amazing!!! BUT that angled side cushion on the right needs to be along the angled backside of the couch in a corner! The pillow she laid her head on needs to switch to the one on the right!!
Yes I agree, the couch is beautiful but the cushions need to be switched around so the peeling fabric isn't noticeable. Other than that, I love the way its starting to come together, im very jealous over those fiberglass chairs. I've definitely seen them brand new for thousands of dollars, good find!
I am D Y I N GGGGG for longer format content like this and idk I’m probably in the minority but like I’d even pay extra to see like 2 hour directors cuts of Becky working on her house 😂💛
Yes, these have been a little short and incomplete. I’d rather see it all finished even if it’s a long video. I’m sure there is some data they are using to gauge how long the videos are but this was not very satisfying.
I also prefer longer RU-vid content from TSG and XO MaCenna. It's so worth watching. I also really dislike "shorts"/content less than 20 minutes. When I want to watch these videos, in trying to both relax and gain inspiration. Not spend additional time scrolling stressfully to find MORE things (usually they're all very low quality these days).
@@sgsge645 yeah, love TSG but halfway through the video all that had been accomplished was purchasing a couch? and 75% of the way thru was....installing said couch
Add some non-slip shelf liner to the back of your chair cushions so they don't slide off as folks get in and out of the chairs. Your dining nook reminds me of all things '70's when I was growing up. Flashback memories!💚
I absolutely adore this transformation. But I might have an unpopular opinion. I think the sofa has a lot of potential, but maybe reupholstered? I think my only concern is the cleanliness of the couch. Besides that, I heck LOVE the way those chairs compliment the couch. What a fun, chic, and cozy dining area!
This isn't a comment on her cleanliness and its not a judgment of her character in any way- I was like, where's the part where she sanitizes the couch...its coming right? ...right? 🥺
Yeah I feel like a faux leather/ vinyl would also be more practical. Maybe I’m just a messy eater but I feel like I would stain the couch in a heartbeat
Not a huge fan of the couch colors but I do think using it as a dining chair situation is really cool and comfy. However, I feel like the furniture is too big for the space. It’s a bit cluttered for my taste but I’m excited to see how it all comes together!
Hey Becky, Consider moving the couch to the wall with the fridge but still snug in the corner. Visually, I think it would complete the girth/bulk of the fridge and be a nice place for your eye to land after the viewer is finished checking out your great angled ceiling details. Additionally, it would allow you to put the chair backs to the right inner wall and allow for easier movement around the entire table itself. Bonus would be to keep the u open to the kitchen so whomever is cooking can interact or the party can spill into the other room without people feeling like they are being towered/reached over.
Becky, I had doubts but when you built the box and added the chairs, WOW. I hope the couch continues to live a long, happy life in your dining room! You may need art, a table, a new light, and maybe a plant in that empty corner next to the couch, but everything is already so good. I love your dedication to the vision of having a 70s home!
Becky, you should have made the base of the couch 3inches inside the couch as a footboard gap, and it would have not made the already bulky sofa more bulky. Also it would have given it a floating effect. Just my opinion as an architect who does a lot of interior design Anyway, I'm excited to see the whole room together!!
@@manasakanade2136 agreed! Having the base set back is in keeping with that era. It can still easily be accomplished by trimming down the back side of the boxes.
Loving it so far can’t wait to see the finished room… just as a bye I had a round table and 4 chairs exactly the same but they had orange removable seat pads I was a young wife in the early 70’s we loved it my mother thought we’d flipped… happy days
If you have the time, would definitely create a full wooden encasement for the couch (on both sides and maybe even the back if there's room to push it forward) so that it fills out the space completely. That would make it feel truly "built in" and could also be a great spot to add additional decor if you wanted
I love the sofa. But it looks like the fabric needs a little love. Is that my imagination? Also, those chairs were genius. Hard to believe they were living outside.
Considering that it's a 50 year old couch, I'd say the fabric has held up pretty well! I think the worn bits will be hidden by a table. Can't wait to see how it turns out! :)
I was thinking the same thing and really just wanted to reach into the screen and flip the cushion on the left around. Is the backside any better? It looks FAB! I'm excited to see a Saarinen type table or brown smoked glass round table. Very cool.
I know you guys have done this a lot, but maybe centering the sofa to the window and building a box for a shelf behind it where extra things like coasters and napkins and things could live on the right side (like a behind the sofa console situation) and building out a small side table on the left side would give it a more built in look, then tambor the built in pieces. I feel like the tambor would give a small detail and make it look more finished!
@@TheSorryGirls I’m so stoked for the reveal, you guys are seriously so inspiring! Im an 18 year old, and I have a small furniture flipping business, I love giving old unwanted pieces, new life and a new story!
Hey Becky, a quick...hack? Tip? Whatever for painting edges without using painter's tape is to use a putty knife! I attempted it because I'm a little too lazy to tape up all the places I'm supposed to, and it works fabulously. You basically place the putty knife against whatever surface you don't want paint on (usually at a 90 degree angle from the surface you're painting), and any paint that would have gotten on the no-paint surface just gets on the knife. 😁 It's great because you can move it along as you paint, you can choose whichever width of putty knife works best for you and your space, and it's reusable between paint jobs!
@@livelongandprospermary8796 yes, I'm aware. However, for people who don't want to make a trip out to buy a product with a single utility, they can go to their basement or shed or wherever they keep their tools and grab a putty knife. It won't be as wide as the purpose-made tool, but you save gas, time, and money with essentially the same effect.
This might be far fetched but if you decide on keeping the couch (which you should, it’s perfect) I think cutting into the baseboard so that it meets up flush with the wood base of the couch would really polish off the built in look! I can’t wait to see the rest of the vintage finds you bring into the space. It’s going to be so unique and so bold. Obsessed!!! 😍
Becky this is one of my favorite DIYS of all TSG DIYs. I wish you would've fixed up all of the white chairs because you can have them around the house and pull them in when you have a crowd over. The chairs are FANTASTIC! Lucky you for the fun find and great job bringing the design together. Can't wait to see what's next.
Add matching wall paneling to sofa base to make it look truly built in, and a left corner shelf/cabinet to fill in the gap and store table linens. Looking awesome!!!
okay sorry Becky but I hate the couch, like really hate it. I think it still just looks like a couch you put on a box. The fabric is very worn, I really hope you washed it cuz I cringed every time you touched it! The gap on the left definitely adds to the look of it being just a couch, maybe if you removed the arm rest and extended some sort of built in section it would look more in place. Also I'm just not sure a couch is the right size, I feel like it would be too deep and far from the table? Maybe this one is ok, but for me I need to be right up on the table with back support. On a positive note I LOVE the chairs, they're incredible, I hope you kept the others just in case you ever need the extra seating, and also just cuz I love them and would hate for any to be wasted! You did an excellent job restoring them! I agree that the paint job is great and made the wood paneling look much more chique, thank good you didn't have to restain all that. I know you're not finished yet so I'll keep and open mind and have faith in your considerable styling skills, but you did say bring it on so :)
I think this is going to come out so good! Excited for part two. I’m also a bit of a textile nerd and my eye just kept getting drawn to that worn piece of velvet and I think if you do some embroidery it can fade in together. Or! Don’t blend it in and go for visible mending/sashiko style. I think it would look amazing on this couch.
For me, a couch at the dining table is like carpet in the bathroom 🤢. Maybe I wouldn't mind it if the room was larger and the couch was.. a different couch 😅 (also only leaving this comment because you asked us to comment what we thought, not trying to put down your taste or anything like that!!) Eager to see how you continue to transform the room 🧡
Thank you!!! That's what I'm screaming. I'm just not feeling it for a dining nook and the fact that it's old and crusty on top. No telling who or what's been sitting on it.
This whole space is giving me Sims vibes in the best way! Love the addition of the red/orange cushions on the chairs to tie them in together! Not sure how big your table will end up being, but might be worthwhile to fixup the other two chairs at Austin's cabin and have them as backup seating in case you have extra guests for dinner! Love how it's coming together!
I kinda feel like the couch should sit under the other window to open the space up a bit more. What a great find! And a gorgeous space to work with. Keen to see the next video 😊
Sameee! I absolutely loved the sofa and the chairs, and can't wait to see how the room turns out when she's done art and decorations and FiNaL tOuChEs! ❤️
Watching these videos makes me appreciate my grandparents' house. It was custom 1962 by a famous architect and the finishes basically stayed the same even when updates were made. I always hated it for being tacky and dated. But now I'm like "damn I should have saved those orange corduroy tassel pendant lights when we sold it"
Since it will be at the dining table, I'd recommend giving the sofa a nice, thorough steam-cleaning 💨 To make the couch look more "built in," you could either A) put a matching stained wood box/end table-bit in the gap on the left, or B) separate the two couch halves and put the built-in table-thing in the triangle of corner space, which would also give people sitting in/near the inner corner more comfortable space to sit without having to sit at the corner of the table or knocking knees with each other.
Love this so much already, would be really interesting to see the couch positioned with the longer side on the wall that continues on for the kitchen, then you could fill the empty space with more cabinets so it looks completely custom! Can't wait for part 2! :D
Omg it's sooo good 👌 Ep 2 should include making it feel even more lika a built in by building in the empty corner, either with storage options or just so you can put a plant there! Maybe even do something to the side of the couch that you see for a even more built in leewk (LOVE this series and looking forward for every room)
I’m obsessed with this couch and the chairs. Great finds! At first the noticeable wear on the couch was distracting but I feel like the table is going to block that! Overall excited for part 2!
I think that Scandinavian plate/bowl pendant light that Rachel made a while back would look amazing in this space!.. It will go so well with the retro theme and you can customise the colours to fit the couch nicely…
Absolutely love the couch and this whole idea. So fun! I would build/fill the gap between the couch and the wall on the left side with the same stained wood so that the couch looks even more built in and you get a kinda of side table! you could even continue the wood on the right side too. I would make the right extension much slimmer so that it wouldn't block the flow/ be too hard to get around but you could put plants, a cool lamp, some books etc on the shelf.... if you made the right extension the same height as the couch, you could maybe even figure out a way to put sliding doors so it becomes a kind of sideboard for you to store placemats etc.
Really love it! But personally i think this space calls for something more moody and inviting, like those cool 70s restaurants! Maybe paint the wall darker colors ( like bronze, dark brown, or even black ) / limewash them? Or even dark textured wallpaper! Also adding some additional ambient lighting with some table lamps with milk glass shade would be nice!
Looks so good so far!! You should take some color matched fabric paint to those bald spots on the couch for touch ups! (And maybe start with a layer of white to make it easier)
Love this! My suggestion on what you can do is push the couch over so the arm rest side is up against the other wall then you and build a box/table (similar to what you did for the base of the coach) where you can put plants, pictures, whatever you want really. But even if you left the coach where it is, it still looks really good. I LOVE a good breakfast nook. 🥰
Becky! You are a bright light! Thank you for the creativity and positivity!! This makeover is fantastic. Those chairs! I am looking forward to the funky light you will find or DIY and the rest.
Love where this is going Becky! Awesome couch. Hey to fix those little threadbare patches you could use fabric paint - if you get primary colours you can mix your own hues to match exactly! I fixed a bashed up part of a Persian rug that way and you’d never even know it. ✨
Amazing find, both the couch and chairs! The chairs are very Eero Saarinen inspired, a very cool look, and you cleaned them up nicely. Can't wait for part 2!
If there's space you should see what the couch looks like turned 90 degrees, so the shorter end is on the back wall! That way maybe the chairs can be turned too and the unfinished backside won't be as visible and the cool. Then for the open corner area maybe a tall built-in bookshelf for plants or ✨finishing touches ✨
I can't wait to see what you have done in part 2. Although I like the couch, I'm not sure it goes. Having four of those fiberglass chairs with a round table might have also been an option. Love your overall style and fantastic attitude to your DIY's.
Yes!! I love a Becky video ☺️ the other girls are great too but Becky is my favourite ☺️ I vibe with her style more I think! Sending love to you all at team TSG from the very cold and snowy North East of Scotland ❤🏴
When I first saw the couch in your car I was like “That’s one ugly striped couch.” But the colors definitely fit your 70’s style. And as you add other elements like the platform and white chairs, then a table, artwork, light fixture, the stripes will fade into the background; and the whole room will be perfect for your home.
It's an acquired taste, for sure 🤣 but everyone has their own style I'd find a way to make it flush to the wall - so it looks like a built-in, plus some side table situation to fill in the gap (stained in the same colour, of course, and done in the same style as the wall). But be as it may, I can't wait for the next part 😊
Would love to hear your thoughts on cleaning vintage sofas like this one. I would never get something like that because I'd be worried about bedbugs/generally cleaning a completely fabric sofa. What do you do to make sure it's safe before bringing it into your home? I think the same every time I see your chair and foot rest that was in your closet/spare room in your previous house. Any advice?
Love love love the chairs and I can’t wait to see the couch with the pillows arranged in the correct pattern (that kept throwing me off). I think I will love it more once it’s all put together. Can’t wait to see the table Becky chooses I know it will be amazing!
Okay but the plate pendant light that Racheal diy’d would look killer in this room!!! Or something that vibe or even the fabric/paper style pendant lights you had around your old home. I’m so invested in this house!!
Cute idea for a nook, but not really liking having to crawl into and around the table to sit and eat. Plus cleaning the couch when food gets dropped, too much work for just sitting down and eating. ❤
Actual audible gasp at the fabric reveal of the couch, so perfect. Building some depth to the sides of the couch with extra boxing to make that unit fit the whole width of the wall, and then covering that boxing with the same moulding that's on the lower wall in the rest of the room, and the same skirting board, would make it look so perfectly built in! (And also give you some extra plant/decor ledge) Love love love this idea immediate pin for my imaginary house I'll one day own 😅
it REALLY depends on the item! when buying second hand furniture, definitely look into the material and how to clean that specific material before doing anything. It really changes depending on what it is!
I can’t get enough of you! As a product of the 60’s, the 70’s holds a lot of memories. In design, music and some of the best movies ever made! My only wish, your show was longer! 😬😁
I love that the nook and sofa idea creates a multifunctional space for dining and lounging all in one! So clever! Plus that sofa was a steal!!!!! Snaps for Becky!!
Looks great Becky! I love that couch it’s a great statement piece there. I really thought you were going to get some angled legs to raise that couch up, but I understand the box to have it as a “built-in”. Also I’m just going to take a stab and guess you’re going with a tulip table for that space. (A goldenrod color on the walls could also make it a little more cozy.)
yes! love the sofa, chairs and seat cushions!!! but i agree that the white is a little too cool toned and bright to feel cozy to me. v curious abt a color on the walls!
I would center the sofa so that the three back cushions line up with the windows and put wood shelves (or planters?) in the gaps on either side at the same height as the top of the back. That way it will look more built-in and customized to the space. Also would love to see a funky chandelier/curtains with an upper sash to balance everything out and complete the lush, luxe, anti-minimal vibe.
I love the couch! I think it’s so fun and I can’t wait to see what kind of table you choose for the space. I personally would add a rug, not loving the tiles but I understand that removing/replacing tiles is $$$ so a rug is a perfect fix! Then big plants and a big mirror or wall art 😊
I'd love to see the little void next to the couch filled with maybe shelves or a mini fridge or something. If you find you need some extra storage you could add some drawers into that under platform. I really love the idea of using a couch for dining seating. And those chairs you were able to refresh are just so fun. Keep following your muse you are creating magic!!!
I truly hope you saved the other 2 retro fiberglass chairs! A set of 4 could definitely come in handy as you grow into, and change things up, in the house! 2 could live in the dinning room for now, and I'm sure the other 2 could find a place in the downstairs somewhere. Extra seating is always handy, and those pieces are amazing!
Loving the couch and chairs in the space, especially after you added the seat cushions!! I think if you use a wet vacuum on the couch you can bring the colors of the couch out even more. Cannot wait to see the end product 🎉
Love it! Fits you so well! Agree that the area where the sofa doesn’t go to the wall needs something. However, the sofa is too high now and blocks the window ledge.
Gotta say I adore those Eero Saarinen-inspired chairs! He designed the iconic Tulip Chair in 1955-56, and since then pedestal chairs like yours have been the mark of elegant hip-ness.
