WILL INTUITIVE EATING HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT? This is what everyone wants to know, right? Even if you're on board with intuitive eating not being a diet, the question about weight loss (or weight gain) is likely to be floating around somewhere.
In this video I talk about how focusing on the weight I was losing kept derailing my efforts to become an intuitive eater and encourage you to reflect on where to put your focus as you explore whether intuitive eating is right for you.

Losing weight is not just for vanity, it's also for health, and should be considered a valuable goal

Same thing happened to me. I decided I just needed to relax and listen to my body and accept myself where I was and not keep trying to lose weight. I dropped 7lbs in a couple weeks and was like this is great. Let me try to lose weight. I never lost more. I slipped back into diet mentality.

I’ve been binge watching your videos! Thank you so so much for creating this space and sharing so much. This video is the one that I had to comment on. I’ve had disordered eating my whole life and I’m morbidly obese. While I want a better relationship with food, I want to lose weight more. That’s why I instantly answered NO to your initial question. I would be miserable with food forever if only I could stick at it long enough to lose weight! It’s not just about how I feel about my size and the daily mental bashings I give myself over it, it’s a fact that my weight is now biologically problematic for me. I’m pre-diabetic, in my mid-30s and wanting to have my first baby but have been denied support due to my BMI. So I see a good relationship with food as a ‘nice to have’ over actual weight loss right now. Time is against me! I totally fall into a restriction/binge pattern when I try to ‘sort my diet out’, inevitably never actually losing any weight. I know I need to reframe things to move past it but following a diet where weight loss isn’t a goal feels a step too far. Eating-wise I’m also a permitter by default so I’m worried intuitive eating will just be a free for all! Sorry for the long and personal response to this, I’m just taking your wisdom from all of your videos in and figuring out what resonates with me. Thank you so much again for being so generous with your content, you’re changing lives!

Intuitive Eating isn’t a diet. It’s a way of eating. People misunderstand it as eating whatever you want when you want, but there’s much more to it than that. It’s about developing a better relationship with food. The problem for a lot of people is that in the very actual of pursuing weight loss results in them gaining MORE weight. For many people who struggle with binge eating, the pursuit of weight loss is a part of what triggers more bingeing. I usually encourage people to heal their binge eating and relationship with food FIRST and then from that place make a decision about if/how to pursue weight loss.

Just want to say thank you so much for the wonderful content and support that you offer people here.The very last thing you said in this video ,that if you're trying to eat intuitively to lose weight then it won't work really was a lightbulb moment for me ! I have followed Paul Mckennas i can make you thin method for years and although i learned a lot of useful things from it i was never actually able to stay with it for any amount of time as i would always be disappointed when in couple of weeks saw no weight loss and i would end up bingeing ,i see now through your videos and your book that you kindly shared that the key is to focus on fixing my relationship with food and put ideas of trying to lose weight aside whilst i do that .

Thank you. What an honest and realistic asessment of IE. It seems as in all things it comes down to self-awareness and attention. I think meditation practices have worked in tandem to help me want to eat intuitively and stop the diet mentality.

Thank you for this thought provoking video. I am in the conundrum that for health reasons, it would be extremely beneficial for me to shed excess weight to improve the quality of my life. I have been yo yo dieting since I was 9 years old and at this point, I have at last 50 lbs to shed to be in a healthy healthy weight range that would help me manage health issues. I have had issues with over eating and binge issues in the past but I feel more under control these days and have been loosely following intuitive eating. The question I ask is this, in order for me to thrive and manage my health issues, it is my doctor's recommendation that I shed weight. How do I do this without restricting and causing my brain to go crazy again with the constant diet mentality thinking that messes me up so badly leading to depression and constant anxiety? Thank you

I think it’s possible to implement some health promoting habits without focusing on weight loss. If you struggle with binge eating, focusing on losing weight tends to make it worse so it is a self-defeating cycle. Even the NICE guidelines (evidence-based best medical practice) states that weight loss should not be a treatment outcome for binge eating recovery. Many people choose to focus on healing their binge eating and emotional relationship with food first and put weight loss on the back burner. Once they have developed balance with food, then they can make a decision whether to pursue intentional weight loss or not

I just can’t lose the last 10-15 lbs. I’ve tried everything and recently a month king cross country camping trip and sleeping outside and fasting 16+ hrs and because of time issues I was eating basically OMAD and I lost 7 lbs without even thinking about it. I was busy but sitting a lot driving hrs each day in the car and sleeping in a cold tent. It was glorious but as I resumed my regular life back home it is hard to keep up that pattern. I felt great during that month because I wasn’t thinking about food all the time. I was thinking about other things. I only ate when I was hungry and I lost weight without obsessing.

What about when you're 100 pounds overweight and a gain is likely to put you into a wheelchair?
@TheBingeEatingTherapist
@TheBingeEatingTherapist 3 года назад
I don’t know if this is you or a hypothetical question, but this is what I do when someone comes to me in this situation. Please note this varies enormously depending on the person 1. What has their journey been? For a lot of people, their weight gain is caused/exacerbated by repeated attempts to lose weight. For some, their weight is staying higher because of binge eating, so healing their binge eating through IE may result in a weight reduction anyway. 2. I ask them what happens now when they focus on weight loss. If it is beneficial for them to do so, then I fully support that. My experience is that for the majority of people with binge eating, focusing on weight loss INCREASES bingeing, therefore their very attempts to lose weight cause the exact opposite. 3. We talk about putting weight loss on the back burner for X amount of time while they heal their binge eating. Focusing on weight loss impedes binge eating recovery because we cannot get to the bottom of the binge eating if someone is trying to eat in an energy deficit (is it emotional or biological?). I am not anti pursuing weight loss and suggest people keep it as an option in the future if they wish to. This makes it easier to let go of it for now so healing can take place. My hope is for people to feel free and at peace and I am all for supporting people to take whatever route they wish to get there. Thanks for watching and commenting

If you’re 100 pounds over weight, will you naturally get to your set point, or could set point be 100 pounds over weight?

No. I wouldn't. This body size keeps me from living. It makes me incapable. It makes me sick. I'm fighting BED but intuitive eating doesnt work for me. I have ADHD and my brain uses food for dopamine. My intuition says eat when I shouldn't. I'm going to take ADHD meds, and THEN I might be able to trust my intuition.

@TheBingeEatingTherapist
@TheBingeEatingTherapist 2 года назад
We don’t know for sure. It’s a theory. Many people who go through dieting cycles end up gaining weight. The theory is that weight cycling increases your set point as the body’s way of protecting against future starvation. If this is true then yes, people could have high set point weights
