I picked up this John Deere X360 with power Bagger from a yard sale for $750. it sat in a garage for 10 years unused lets see what it will take to bring it back to life.
Crap in the carburetor reminds me of the story about the lady that took her car to be fixed because it didn't run right. After it was fixed she ask the mechanic what was wrong so she could do something to fix it herself next time. He said crap in the carburetor. She said Oh no I could never do that.
My sister's boss, in the 70s, took her Mini back to the garage ,where she bought it, because "it started OK but then would cut out after a minute or two". The mechanic pointed to the choke pull and asked if she always had it pulled out. She replied, "The choke?... Oh! you mean the handbag holder!".
HAHAHAHAHAHA...I like to ask people if they heard of the girl with Dandruff...WELL...she went to the beach was attacked by a shark and all they could find was her Head n Shoulders...( 30 to 40% ask...is she all right???)🙄
Like the lady who bought the used car...every time she turned the corner, either way, or stopped or took off, a loud forceful KLUNK would jar her car the opposite way. She took it to the repair shop to be fixed. She got a call from the repair shop, shortly thereafter...YOU HAVE A LOOSE BOWLING BALL IN THE TRUNK, was the message...with lots of laughing in the background. Bill of Tn. 🇺🇸
I take the keys out of all my machines so nobody messes with them, even in the workplace you never know when someone is going to screw around with your stuff
AYYYY i know how that is i (like the ditzy dumbass i am at times) forgot to take the key out of the new gravley aded about 60 hours to it then when i went to mow the lawn the silly bugger wasnt even clickin didnt even have 20 hours on it had 16.9 hours
Trapper RE: The choke butterfly not closing completely. I have been told the choke not closing completely is an EPA issue. They are required to design the choke not to choke completely because of the raw gas that isn't burned completely. This is normally Ok during normal operation temperatures but when the temperature goes down you may need a full choke. Also if you look closely the choke butterfly has one hole thru it which doesn't help during below normal cold starts.
Just for once I’d like at least one of the 100+ people who ‘disliked’ this video to give me a solid reason as to why, I mean what’s to dislike exactly... was it the fuel leak, the type of screwdriver he uses? I truly don’t get any viable reason to dislike any of it. Apart from trolls of course.
I consistently get 2 dislikes on almost every video I make. If it's someone doing it out of spite, they're idiots, cause RU-vid still sees dislikes as an engagement which benefits my channel.
Before that fella passed he had a VERY well manicured lawn. Must have loved being on that tractor. Whatever made him happy, I say isn't wasted. Get all the enjoyment you can out of life.
My dad has the same Deere lawn tractor. The choke is supposed to be like that. Also when you shut it off, it runs for a second, then shuts off. It’s supposed to be like that, Mustie.
That's so it doesn't backfire when the spark is cut off but still drawing gas. It shuts the gas off at the carb and burns the last bit off before cutting the spark.
instead of having wiring circuits that go through the different safety's to either kill the engine or keep it from starting John deere had the brilliant idea to use a brain box to control cutting off or not starting. the key turning off sends signal to this brain box and it shuts off engine. these are prone to failing.
Thanks for your video. Two things I need to put an idea about. The delay you experienced on oneside of the coil MIGHThave been going thru the condenser. When you check a capacitor, the meter battery charger itand you watch the analog meter slowly bleed back off. If it charges up and falls right off, the capacitor is bad. Another item, if you will put a 2x 10 on the concrete floor, to set your battery on, the concrete won't bleed the battery down. We had rubber mat stapled to 2x10's a tad longer than the battery was.( Battery shop.) for Locomotives. USE White-out pen to label wires, hoses, key-mark edges before taking them apart. match to go back together easier. Love your content.
How many people were pointing at their screen and yellIng gas leak? I laughed when he asked "you were watching why didn't you say something?". Loved the video
It's like, you see a new Mustie video and you get all excited. Then you realize it's super long. You say, "do I really want to watch the whole thing?" Then, 30 minutes later, you're halfway through it and you say "yep, I definitely wanna watch the whole video." Amazing as always Mustie 👍👍👍
Nikki two barrel carburetor. Lots of passages to clean. The two brass jets in white plastic are different sizes, so be sure to make a note when removing them for proper placement. X series John Deere mowers are better than the low end big box store ones. It's in good shape, low hours, plus bagger set up. Resale value will be profitable. You done good.
Appreciate that you leave in things like the carb leak and cracking the carb open twice, Mustie. And love the jokes too like with the small torch. You strike the right balance between funny and too funny. Great length on this video and you have a good sense of when to speed up certain segments and when to cut and return for certain tasks. That's an art form. I think we can't get enough of wrenchin' along with you. Thanks for sharing what you do.
You paid a more than fair price for that machine and you fixed and serviced it on your own time and dime. It was not a freebie, but you've got a presentable machine to take home and cut the lawn and make the yard look nice. Thanks for another educational and entertaining video!
I kept hollering at you when you were putting the carb back together that you were forgetting the bowl drain screw but you just could not hear me, so I was laughing pretty hard when we could see the carb pissing everything back out. Love your content and would love to see you put a 302 into the Econoline pickup. Keep up the great work.
@@jamesscott1932 Ahh, some re-engineering needed! As a first try, put big boat anchors in the cab and in the bed. When all that weight breaks the diff, new rear axle, well you get the idea!
Mustie! thanks for all the videos. I've been a Subscriber for years and watch you tackle these riding lawn mowers. I finally took a chance and picked up q 2013 Husqvarna Lgt2654 Lawn Tractor with 200 hrs for $250. guy gave up on it cause it kept throwing belts and had snapped off the bolt on the Front Trans Bracket. Pulled the transaxle off and angle brackets were almost split off. Cut off bkts and welded 3"x3"x1/4" angles (drilled new mounting holes. bought new front bracket and drilled out 5/16" mounting bolts. installed grade 8's all the way around + new drive belts /replaced fluid. Assembled it all together and it wouldn't go in gear. "UPset" until i remember the little wire in the back for free wheeling was out. Pulled it & Ran like a Champ .$100.00 in parts to fix $3800.00 tractor . thanks for the guidance
I knew it ! JOHNNY 5 IS ALIVE !!! But on a more serious note... as you mentioned the water gathers at the bottom therefore imo the first thing to do before disturbing the motor or fuel system is to open all the drain plugs just a little to see if water exits or other.
Sigh, can't do a Mustie1 live, he couldn't hear us through our masks. Secondly with too many of us actually present we might get a Mustie1 lockup, much harder to fix than a locked up engine!
Mustie1 as far as the throttle blade opening, you would be surprised. I visited Kenny Bernstein's shop yrs ago and our automotive instructor asked how much power it made where the throttle blades were open, the crew chief opened the throttle blade roughly about 30% and said it makes around 2000hp at this throttle position and the same amount at wide open throttle. We were all stunned when he said that. I'm sure someone else could chime in on that. But as for my personal experience in the engine dyno room yrs ago as well. It's funny to see a 500+ hp engine put out 5-8 hp at idle. It's always the little things you never think about. Great vids as always
I appreciate your videos Mustie1. I have learned a lot about small engines from these videos. I now have a nice 24" wide 5hp snow thrower, and a self propelled lawn mower. I garbage picked both of them. with less than a hundred bucks, and a few of your videos. I am in good shape. Thank you for that.
I think they come from folks who paid full price for a lesser mower and are more than a little jealous! :) This one has all the bells and whistles and a real bargain at 750.00!
The throttle stop keeping the butterfly from opening all the way is actually exactly what you mentioned. They'll have a v-twin at a given displacement say up to 30 HP. They'll sell a 22, 25, 27, etc that are all exactly the same except the throttle stop. Saves on manufacturing costs vs having actual different engine platforms and models. Grind that stop down or buy a replacement shaft from the higher HP version and you've got basically free HP.
@@clarkcotten5842 speed control is typically the governor's job. It tells the throttle what to do and will close the throttle as necessary to limit RPM.
You are completely correct. That is a JD branded kawasaki. If a kawasaki engine model ends in a "1" it is being limited by the carb. For instance you have the fr730 which is the same engine as the fr691 and the fr651. They just allow the throttle to open all the way.
Nice to see Mustie's home again, where it all started. I see he's added a no trespassing sign. I guess too many of us wanted to stop by and say hello. Welcome to notoriety Mustie. Proud of ya. Cheers!
Bagger frame should have a pin to insert into hole where the tow ball is inserted. In other words, the factory design is to use either the bagger or tow ball. The prior owner made the plate to weld the bagger frame to so they could also use the tow ball. I would recommend going back to factory approach as the bagger frame is super easy to install and remove that way.
@26:16 I have an X324 not sure what u gave for the JD but u have a great tool there! The tow ball doesn’t belong and for most part not usable on that JD….. to low to ground and I don’t believe weight capability. Mine has a dropping in pin about the same size hole as your unit (1”x1 1/2” long) the the plate that the ball is passing through belongs there! Your grass catcher lifts right off no problem!
Damn! It took me 4 attempt to watch it all! sunday was so busy that I could not watch the whole video at all!.. BTW i disable my ad blocker when I watch mustie video's. and a few others creator I watch. He is about the only guys that dont ask us to do something. So I try to help him. He do what other dont, putting himself in real situation and try to fix old stuff. Showing us his taught pattern on how to resolve such problem. others are not always as open on how they think about the problems they have and many times we see a solution with out actualy seeing how it was created. Again, thanks for your time showing use mere mortals how you do things .
Heck of a nice machine for the money! I always love these repair videos.. Another machine saved from being scrapped. Also always love your narration in all of your videos. Clear, polite and I usually learn something or another.. Thanks for keeping these coming!
Thanks for putting out these great instructional videos. Not only are they very informative but also show the average homeowner the correct thought process and methodology for troubleshooting mechanical objects which are not working. Cheers from montreal!
Why is it that I get a feeling of satisfaction watching the tractor work and mow down the grass when all I did is sit on my ass for an hour and a half? Great job Mustie!
Next time you mesure resistance; please disconnect power :D otherwise you might get wierd measurements ;) ... even if YOU are schooled enough to understand everything, you might teach it to others wrong. I totally love your Content !!! Stay save and keep going !
Thanks, I always learn something new from you. My JD zero turn also did that reving up and down and now I know why. I change to a good fuel filter started using no alcohol gas and I now add Sea Foam in every tank and it came out of its problem. Thanks again from Mike in Nebraska.
nice score...I paid $5500 for the X300 10 years ago. I can't imagine what they cost now. Yours is a step up from mine and still low hours. These a great tough tractors. You'll love it I eventually took the bagger off because it was more a pain in the ass emptying the bags every 3 minutes. You'll see... If you just put the mulch kit you took off back on and you'll be set.
Thanks to years of your videos, I became a lawn tool repair and donate service here in the panhandle of Florida recently due to the hurricane we had. Lots of water flooded garages and lawn gear here. I comfortably channeled my inner Mustie1 and fixed all the ones I collected by the side of the road. I was stumped by a Poulan chainsaw, but otherwise lots of machines were saved from the landfill and given away. As for the Poulan, I haven't given up yet. :)
My wife discovered the Brinly Lawn Sweeper in the early 2000’s. Leaves fill up quickly, and take up room quickly too because they don’t get crunched up, but it’s a lot quicker than using a Toro or Ryobi vacuum. It dumps quite easily. It will not immediately collect grass that you’ve cut because the mower moves the grass to the side, so the only disadvantage is you have to make another pass of the yard to pick up the grass. The gears in the wheels wear out about every 4 months, but they sell the parts and they’re easy to replace. The brushes will sometimes come loose, so I used a few sheet metal screws to fasten them.
The fuel shut off is at the front bottom of the carb if that is what you were referring to. Hold your finger on it and turn ignition ON. You should hear and feel a Click. I have an X320. Kawasaki 22 HP. These are $5-6,000 Mowers. Plus Bagger! Actually built by John Deere. X- model is the key to that. Totally different Deck support and it does a fantastic job on rough lawns. Blow back the fuel into the tank. Loosen but do not remove cap. Woirked for me. I needlessly put on a new Fuel Pump. Those damn carb screws sometimes need a Vise Grips to remove them. Had similar carb today on Cub Cadet. Love that Shake and Break tool. There is a trick to belt removal with that gold anodized arm that releases tension. Manual can be downloaded. Mine has a similar spring loaded choke. 1/2 throttle, crank, push up Choke for a second or so til it fires. Mine floods very easily, and also does not shut off instantly much like yours. I think the lack of Fuel shuts it off. Check for tiny holes in those 2 Emulsion tubes. 10 psi Front, 12-15 rear. Deck height is uneven, left side is lower and not matched for height. 1 hole out. Simply make a 4" extension for the Ball hitch. From a Farm Supply store, get a serious Spinner. The John Deere ones do not fit the oval steering wheel rim. That one is a keeper Mustie. Sunflowers are ready.............
Mustie, there's a heavy S-Bracket that holds the powerhead to the deck. Part number is likely M145011. Price is about $24. Also, these engines always need choke to start, even warm.
My friend, you are the man. I have learned so much from your videos. I have a Troy-Bilt rider, and it won't turn over. I wish I could pick your brain. Thanks for what you do for guys like me. Dana
I have watched this video a couple of times and several other of your videos. This time I noticed your customized cord wrap around the auto wheel. Good idea. Great videos.
What an over engineered, maintenance nightmare, of a contraption just to mow the lawn. Having said that, don't ever worry about making videos "too long". We gladly watched the whole thing. If anyone complains, just split them into part 1/2 and upload at the same time.
I believe if you found a time machine in the trash, you’d say “I’ve never seen one of these before, cool!” Then proceed to tear it down, figure it out and get it running, all the while teaching us how to make our own... awesome!
Yeahhhh...I could have bought one for $800.00 it was almost identical...CUSTOM w chrome and 240 or 200ci w 3 on the tree...Low miles ...cherry too...no dents...no place to put it...DANG IT...
The self cancaling choke is to prevent people running the machine for extended periods of time with the choke on resulting in excess air pollution and wasted fuel.
That is crazy amount of hours! I have a six-year-old Kubota BX and it has 252 on it and we have 2 acres and it’s also used for clearing snow. I applaud the way you’re able to do these videos without having to edit out a whole bunch of swears. If I filmed myself for three hours working on stuff I’d be down to four minutes worth of usable material LOL
I let my brother borrow my riding mower for the weekend. I told him when he brings it back, to shut the fuel off and let it die when you park it in the shed. He never shut the key off and it sat for a week with the hour meter running. He took it with 240 hours on it. When I went to use it the next weekend, the battery was dead and it had 360 hours on it. Haha
My wife has a cub cadet and I have a craftsman lt1000. On my wife's cub cadet any time the key is on the headlights are on so when SHE shuts off the fuel and leaves the key on and walks away then I come out the next day to a dead battery.
I got one last year from a guy who always put a battery tender on it and he constantly was forgetting to shut the key off it had over a 1000 hours on it. When I sold it the asked if it really had a 1000 hours on it I said no it didn't, how do you know? He asked. Because it still runs. If by some chance it did still run with 1000 hours it would be blowing smoke like a freight train. (we did the math to figure out the true hours 1/2 hour to mow his lawn 40 times a year for 7 years about 140 hours give or take 50
PERMATEX Hi Tack. Both sides of work piece. Never leaks with clean mating faces. Very forgiving on broken/missing gaskets. Good for water, oil & transmission. Clean.
Love the John Deere's. I have the older Hydrostatic LX176 and economy D100. The biggest design flaw is the plastic hood panels. An Ebayer sells a hood for $1200.( Insert disbelief and head shaking here ) A friends Yard Machine- All Metal Hood. Mustie1 fixes all !
