I went picking during the annual fall cleanup trash day. one of the things I found was this ratty mid 80s suzuki 230 atv. lets put it up on the bench and see if it can be brought back to run.
@Mark Schaffer You mean 5 up, right? ;-) The Kawasaki 500 Triple (H2s) were 5 up. Easy to get in N. Sometimes too easy! I never had a problem with that, though. Never knew why they would do that with something ridden off road.
yessssssssssssss! the maniacal cackle that is the MUSTIE TRADEMARK of a bike, car or motor COMING BACK to LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am an engineer and watching you troubleshoot your problems helps me find new perspectives when I am working. Totally different issues but your mindset can be applied to many applications. Thanks!
I used to have the same quad as a kid. I was given it in a bunch of boxes and had to put it together by myself at 14 years old. That quad is why I'm so good at fixing things as an adult. I would love to own another one but here in MA there's no place to use them, it's even illegal here to ride in your own yard...
I can't ever thanks enough you sir, just about 3 weeks watching your videos, I had fixed all my 3 walking lawnmowers, 1 Muray tractor, 1chainsaw and 2 trimmers. Now I just have 1 more kid bike rider to do. Thanks abunch pro Mustie1. And I love your kindness and joyful laugh!!!
Budget Buildz. Young Kid. No swearing and he laughs at himself like this guy. He's in N.C working on a Porsche he salvaged from a junkyard for 500bucks. Plus alot of stuff people don't want. The only one i've subscribed to, besides this guy.
I absolutely love both Mustie and Camarata. I will check out those other 2 while I am sitting at home like everyone else. These guys get me motivated and give me so many great ideas.
Great video because of the challenge and adventure in getting that thing going again. I was really looking forward to it since you picked it up. Thanks and I hope to see more of it!
Who needs Peloton when you have an old kick start Suzuki? My favorite part of these videos is the Mustie laugh when an engine first fires up. Had to wait a long time to hear that this time. Second favorite part is playing with Lilly. Thanks for my new Sunday morning routine, Mustie...
Cool! Those winner laughs are always absolutely priceless. Fortunately they are not rare because usually Mustie1 brings everything back to live. Can't wait to watch him having even more fun driving than starting it. I simply love Lilly.
When you miss leg day at the gym ...." take 274 " , kick 11,597 and yes , M1 stands triumphant over his tea kettle on wheels ! You had to work for this one , nice work , you should be walking again in a few days lol.
As I lurked outside the castle, from within I heard an engine come to life. Intermixed with the cacophony of gears and valves and spark induced explosions, I could just barely hear the mad chuckle of Dr. Mustie. Once again, a long dead creature had been brought back to life.
They ran when they were put away 5 years ago. Everything’s there. Just needs starter, battery, plastics, tires, chain, carb, and valve job. Also smokes and won’t stay running or go into 2nd gear. $800. No low ballers I know what I got. No tire kickers serious buyers only
one of my favorite people on youtube.... a must watch .... how he doesn't have millions of followers .... I don't know .... keep it up sir ... you educate and entertain
Ahhh the old LT230s and LT80. I worked for one of the countries largest Suzuki dealers before the internet era. We had 22 phone lines and we sold parts and accessories over the phone (nationwide by ads in the back of dirt bike and atv magazines) by looking them up on hand micro fische parts breakdowns. I still have part numbers committed to memory for some common things...lol... left crankcase covers (axle and swing arm bearings start to go...chain flies off breaks the sprocket guard off), stators, gaskets, reverse lever and shifter seals.... you gave me flashbacks... hahah Best way to start these is stand on it like you are riding it, fold the right peg up and kick straight down.
Search wide, if you find the right deal, a shipping co can have it brought your way, they will want it containing no oil or fuel, but it might be reasonable cost, after jan.1 the supply/ demand ratio is best for finding stuff, less people looking, less people riding, of course, deals are all about timing, finding them & pouncing on them
You're right, you need one of us along when you go picking in those unlimited trash runs to help you get the things in the truck, and help get them out too. But you Really need your 16 yr. old self to come back and kick them over!(I do too, many times have said "getting to old for this") but man when they 1st start! It makes it all worth it. I do it a bit different, 1st take off the air cleaner assembly so I'm not dragging in half decicated mouse bodies and usually look into the intake, look into the combustion chamber, then the valves. Use a shot of PB Blaster, then some light sewing machine oil in the jug. Get them freed up, then check for spark etc.. All adds up to the same thing though, and glad to see it come back, those were good motors, especially if you find them quit on someone before they beat the crap out of them.
I've not long started following Mustie 1, great video's, I know this is an older video but when we were on the farms and playing around with old seized engines we put diesel down plug holes, that seemed to work really well. That worked with both diesel and petrol ( gas) engines.
Also... That carb does NOT have a "choke". Instead it uses an 'enrichener' circuit. An enrichiner will ONLY work when the throttle is at idle position..... If you open the throttle-slide the vacuum is lost to the enrichener circuit hence reducing the additional fuel flow. (disabling the enrichener)
just started watching but i think at least one of them will work.. those old suzukis are pretty bullet proof. However, the young child who knows not of engine oil and usually rides said quad is often the suzukis only natural predetaor
Great motivation video you stuck through it till the end until that thing started running I was just as happy as you were. The anticipation at the end was great and for free you can't beat that
I used to have 3 of these mid 80s Suzuki LT230s every one of them broke that side cover at some point when the chain would come off. There was supposed to be another bold in that cover where you were digging but it gets ripped off by the chain. I ended up buying new covers and making guards out of 1/8x1 flat bar. Solved that problem. The decompression was operated by a hand lever that was on the left hand bar and pointed up above the clutch lever. It was like a bicycle hand brake lever. I never used it but all of mine had it. Those are awesome quads. They go forever and got a ton of power. Great find and good job getting it back to life.
Same experience here - my dad took the engine to his shop and had the bolt hole welded up, cover repaired, and retapped. My decompression lever never worked properly, spent a lot of time pulling it up hills to push start it. Ended up selling it after a top-end rebuild didn't fix other problems it had.
Cool video my friend. I have the exact 86 lt 230!!! It was given to me not running. Gave her some TLC, and now its pretty much bullet/kid proof. Carbon build up on both valves, on mine was a major issue. Got rid of that.....now it smokes no more and starts with a half kik. Good job man.
That video where he dropped a part inside the engine and was trying to fish it out - I found myself tilting my head from side to side, trying to see inside the engine.
I had an old girlfriend get mad at me at a movie when a girl with a low cut shirt appeared. I re-positioned myself about the same time and she thought I was trying to get a better look... My completely valid argument that it was physically impossible did not phase her.
i do hes a genius with small engines i know its not rocket science but still most people would have just junked it half way thru i started to watch him a few months ago when i was on a honda trail ct 70 kick a buddy of mine has 2 i wanna nab one off him
I told Mustie he is getting to old for kicking these bikes. Finally he admitted. He should have a younger assistant or only pick electric starter bikes. I admit that I am also too old for kicking.
For an old man, you are a beast hahaha. I already start feeling aching pain right off the bat when you pull the atv onto the stand. Let alone from the recap video when you are loading them onto the truck. And I'm 27.......sad Haha.
lol yeah, I got out of breath just watching him kick that engine over again and again. I'm 31 and I get out of breath sometimes kickstarting my old 2 stroke haha
Man I loved this video. And wanted to help. I have this very 230 Quadsport got it when I was 12 years old I'm 36 now. Do your self a favor the next time you kick it throw a leg over stand on the left peg and kick straight down with your heal. Compression release goes upwards on the top left handlebar. As for the chain coming off and hitting the case there notorious for it. I still love mine. And I'll be honest I was laughing just a bit before you realized it was in reverse. But something was definitely causing it to bind up.
I had a Suzuki LT230 Quad sport like that when I was a kid it was a fun machine the only issue I ever had with it was the rear axle bushings ware out and the chain pops off the sprocket destroying the cover right in front of the drive sprocket and I've learned that JB weld works real good to fix the busted cast aluminum cover
What you have there is a Suzuki LT230 Quad Sport. Possibly around a 1986 or earlier model. The manual version was the Quad Sport and the automatic was the Quad Runner which usually had an electric starter as well. There was also a 2 stroke version the Quad Racer. As long as you don't get the timing 180 degrees off you shouldn't have to much trouble getting it running providing the electrical system is ok. The one I had was identical to the one your working with and was an '86 model. It was near bullet proof mechanically and was reliable as can be. Seeing yours has brought back a lot of memories and if I could find another one I would snag it in an instant.
I really think mustie is the true definition of a handy man. he can fix anything from putting batteries in a tv remote, to fixing a fighter jet turbine engine
