Whenever you are looking at a used ANYTHING which needs work. NEVER let on to the seller what you think the problem is, ESPECIALLY if it is an easy fix and NEVER whip out your leatherman or whatever & fix it on the spot. CASE IN POINT- 2 mechanics went to look at an old excavator a farmer had which had broken down & left park where it broke some years earlier. The Guys looked it over & concluded they knew exactly what it need. They jumped in their truck and went to town and picked up some parts and fluids & returned and set to work. In a couple of hours they had it running so they drove it about & tested all the systems and were satisfied this was a good deal. So they told the farmer they would take it & the farmer says “ Well, boys, OK, but it going to cost you twice what I first asked” The guys were pissed. The farmer said “ That price was for an ex that did not run” The guys protested that they made it run & they paid for the parts. The farmer said “Don’t care. The ex is now a running machine & I want twice” The guys were pissed but had put over $500 into it. So they paid his price grumbling all the way and drove away with their new prize but not so good a deal. !

@AttorneyBCollins
@AttorneyBCollins 2 года назад
Fair enough. His price was not running. They buy it at that price taking the risk. They get it running, it now is more valuable to any buyer. They still hadn't bought it. I can see both sides, but they got it running so they wouldn't risk their money on something with a thrown rod etc. They buy it then get it running, it is theirs.

kinda makes you wonder if that boom on the front was used to place Jersey barriers on a highway job somewhere. My first concern with a start on these things is the transmission being in neutral. I had a buddy who got run over by a tractor last year because he THOUGHT it was out of gear.... and it wasn't! Crushed his pelvis and 3 months in a wheelchair.
@parkermckowen3781
@parkermckowen3781 2 года назад
I was thinking the same thing but if it’s in gear the starter won’t have enough power to not only move the machine but it definitely won’t have enough power to move those flat ass tires. If it does move it he will notice that the machine moves when the starter turns over at first and the machine don’t crank up
@rupe53
@rupe53 2 года назад
@@parkermckowen3781 ... with an automatic or fluid drive trany you might not notice any movement while cranking, but if the engine fires up (RPM increase) you won't have time to react. At that point in the video, we didn't know there were any flat tires. That's what happened to my friend. BTW, in his case it was captured on a home security camera. He got as far as throwing up his hands and trying to lean back but the large tire already pinned his foot and was crawling up his leg. Basically, a human wheel chock. He's lucky the ground was soft, and no leg bones were broken. He's also lucky the engine stalled within a few seconds.
@blythkd9017
@blythkd9017 2 года назад
@@rupe53 I saw that it had flat tires, thought it pretty obvious from the get go. So no, it wasnt going to just take off unless the engine fired up at full throttle. And all these type loaders have fluid drive with a torque converter so nothing is going to happen during cranking. But of course, it's always good to be cautious and have a getaway plan in case things don't go as planned.
@rupe53
@rupe53 2 года назад
@@blythkd9017 ... yup, but you can't always tell what the internals of an injection pump are doing, then there's the possibility of internal oil issues and a run-away engine. They may have taken precautions off camera, but I didn't see them.

I’d probably buy it and fix it, it doesn’t really look like it would need a huge amount of work to get it fully working. It seems like it just needs the solenoids checked, new tires, a bucket, and some work in the cab (key and gauges). The benefits of having it working would go even beyond having it as a showpiece since you could also use it to move things or get machines unstuck

Pretty impressive that a nice front end loader would sit there almost two decades and the windows are intact, there’s no graffiti on it anywhere, the fuel hasn’t turned into jello, the tires are not only still there but are inflated, rust hasn’t completely covered it, and even the filters have their paint yet. It’s simply astounding.

One thing that I can't stress to anyone doing this enough is to always and I mean, ALWAYS check the machine to make sure that its not in a forward or reverse gear as starting any machine that you have absolutely no idea who touched it last could have been left in gear and stalled in gear without ever being restarted and could potentially get you or someone else killed very easily... Also, if you do end up doing something like this and you end up leaving the machine, please put the hydraulic equipment back down on the ground so some kids don't come by and get themselves seriously injured or killed by messing around with it. Thank you for thinking about that and doing that, not many people would think about that unless they either have their own kids or did something like that themselves as a kid. Also, I would not be walking under that boom being up like that being that its sat around for 18 years and the hydraulic lines to that boom have had plenty of time to sit around and rot. It doesn't take lines that old to start a leak and then have that thing fall on you. If you're going to buy it and it runs and works, get it up to operating standards and put it to use.

First off, jack those tires off the ground before attempting to inflate them. It can be very dangerous to do it sitting like they are. Before you even move it change all the filters, engine fluids and check to make sure everything is tight. Fix it up possibly even some paint then flip it. If you can find a bucket reasonably priced for it even better. Right now any working construction equipment is selling top dollar at fire sale speeds.

Cummins employee here. That is a Cummins K19. Basically, an indestructible engine. That loader in working condition is worth real money, especially to a mining or materials handling outfit.

I grew up in the 70s/80s era my neighbor had a cab over. Been in transportation since 1988 we adopted a old ford cab over single tandem for a yard switcher from Roadway. Watching these videos takes me back personally. You are not only bringing them alive it was the drivers legacy That turned those wheels you get a good one restore it. Remember BJ and the bear. I use jumper boxes myself to get a truck running on cold starts. Freight has to move. Awesome videos my friend.

Of course you should take it back to your shop and make it run right. Maybe get some forks for it and use it to move stuff around. It is a classic Loader and just to let it rust away is not right.
