#1930 #antique #vintage WILL IT WELD!?!! Ive had this 1930 Smith's Welder for years, from my understanding, it was one of the first publicly available welding machines! I had no idea how rare this particular welder was until I tried to research it on the internet. But of course John at Magne gas had a little insight on its history.
Heres my Instagram- / meltinmetalmobile

What I really learned from all this is that lightly sanded rusty metal with clear coat applied is my new FAVORITE FINISH! If that turns out looking half as good as that Old welder I'm doing the same to my old Super-Glide! A glossy rust covered rifle stuck into the saddle bag of a Glossy Rust covered Harley! Would not do any rifle like that especially one with a thin sheet steel receiver, rust will thin it out and eventually spread weakening the receiver. I second what the guy said about talking to Miller Electric. I'm in Appleton and I got to tour their facilities here and it's seriously awesome. They walked us through basically every step of the process, and they make every part of their machines. And they do have a display area with a bunch of antique welders, it's pretty cool but I doubt they work like yours! They would probably be thrilled to see it in action. Great company, good people, and a hell of a tour.

This welder was made for when guys said “ I pick things up and I put them down “ . I did a gas station clean out upstate NY back in the early ‘90’s and we found a rusted out GE or Westinghouse welder that had the crank handle , no extension cord . Those were supposed to be the first welders , they called them “ compact “ . It was the size of a water heater . I was in a hunting club then and one of the members said to me “ you ain’t bringing that f**kin’ thing back to the club ! “ . Good thing the handle was seized , I was thinking about it . Yeah , I think the first welders were AC , according to internet research I saw once . I think Hobart or Lincoln made the first DC machines ? Don’t matter now , everybody and their mother makes welders now that you can fit in your glove box so welders come a long way . But damn ! That is a serious find ! Please ensure that it will stay safe , at any expense , we really don’t want anything to happen to your pretty little girl . I’m sure she has a top class welding rig so no fears there 👍 . But I guess that “ portable “ welder won’t make it back into your living room anytime soon . As heavy as it is , I’m sure a lot of guys would have grabbed it , just for the cool factor . Laughing to myself thinking it probably beats the sh*t out of anything inexpensive today . Not saying to tell harbor freight , amazon , lowes or Home Depot to GFY but if that machine , in its simplicity , lasted until today and works , can new Lincoln or miller machines live that long ? This smith machine has NO circuit boards or touch pad BS and probably little to no circuit protection and it’s still hanging tough . Tell you what , the fact that it’s quiet as f**k makes it really nice because after like 15 minutes of a HF 90 amp buzzing in your ear , this machine would be pure pleasure . Just set it and forget it . I wonder does this machine even have a duty cycle . You kicked a$$ on that deal . Too bad it’s heavier than my ex mother in law but I know you’ll put casters or a dolly under it . Totally bitchin’ machine though . Nice ! ✌🏻 P.S. - my apologies to the misses for the distasteful ex mother in law comment , sorry ma’am 🌸

The modern line voltage is around 40VAC higher than when these things were new. You’ll likely have to drop a good 10 to 20 amps lower than what you’d use with modern machines because of it.

It was to repair the greenhouse since the takedown hoop greenhouse was a solid steel heavy thing that finally just fell apart with enough missing to not be able to keep repairing the greenhouse. The welder was also used by original owners of business to make a few heavy steel handled brooms that work nice with the wire bristles and an even heavier shovel that nobody can use as well as a few small wrongly done welding jobs on parts of the current greenhouse frames that are not an issue anymore as the plastic sheet roof is replaced with a more durable poly panel/clear fully translucent corrugated plastic one.

If you restored that machine and gave it a good polish, it would be a work of art that might fetch a high price at auction.

A shop I used to work at had lincoln STT mig welding machines, super fancy state of the art. Virtually impossible to burn a bad weld. They cost over 20k CAD and we couldn't have the doors open because too much dust would get in the circuitry and fry them lol

Great idea turning it into a table. Good thing you didn't burn your shop down when the wiring was wrong

I've never seen one of your videos before, but this is awesome. I wish we had someone remotely close to John's caliber around here.

That sounds wicked running AC on steel. Kind of like an old horror movie sound effect.

That is a great antique welder. I had acquired a 1950's 415volt 3phase, English Electric oil cooled welder but sadly it was dead. I got about £50 for it when I weighed it in for scrap. I have a 1980 Oxford 180amp Bantam oil cooled welder. It's AC for welding but has a DC battery charger built in to the case. It weighs about 160lbs and has a small trolley/bogey to move it about. Ity can run on 32amp single or 32amp three phase supply. Great video and a great looking old welder too.
