He got it exactly right, he nailed it. He had the cadence the same in both Maori and English versions and you cold understand his Maori version as well.
I have met Will martin he is really friendly he came to our school and we all got a free copy of his album and he signed it and i got a photo with him!
Amazing video clip. Goosebumps all the way and I'm not even a Kiwi! Will's album 'A new world' is out now in NZ and you can order it via Gpstore or Smokecds. Definitely a must-buy! I had very high expectations but this CD really impressed me. Martin has high-range vocals and plenty of talent. Wow!
I can't find much either, but there is this in the New Zealand Herald. It is possible his album has been put back. Singer lands $3m deal 5:00AM Saturday July 28, 2007 Will Martin is expected to rival Hayley Westenra. You may not have heard of him yet, but Will Martin is a superstar in the making. The North Shore 22-year-old has landed the most lucrative contract offered to a New Zealand musician - worth almost $3 million.
f'king brilliant way to sing a national anthem... and i'm liking the fact he didn't feel the need to go for an extravagent ending the way that some soloists do. he just nailed the anthem with heart and in it's simplicity! brilliant stuff, NZ!

Core Lummy, EvilAtHeart, Nessun Dorma is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera "Turandot", and has been sung by many people before Pavarotti was born. He made it famous.
Sorry, the songs I listed were a joke - I was poking fun at the crossovers in general who all seem to sing those songs. I get the feeling that Decca are including the West Side Story Album as an album of all the soloists on it... So that is his October album, as it were. At least this is my theory. Record companies move in mysterious ways.
Hmmm, a rival to Westenra? This should be interesting. I am definitely interested in buying his CD when it comes out...when you say Oct does that mean 2007 or 2008? Are you sure those are some of the tracks? Because I hope that there is something more exciting and new than that...however classics like those are always welcome.
Continued: "Martin has signed a five-album deal with Universal Music Group with his first "popera" - or classical crossover - album due out in October. UMG expects the album to sell 2 million copies and Martin to rival the popularity of his new labelmate, Hayley Westenra."
Here are eight songs that may be included: Nella Fantasia You Raise Me Up Time to Say Goodbye Pokarekare Ana (Duet with Hayley) Hine E Hine Nessun Dorma Ave Maria (Possibly as a duet with Hayley) New Zealand National Anthem in Maori We should have a competition and see who gets most right.
Some of this might be just hype of course, but Will is supposed to have signed the biggest deal with a record company (Decca) ever made by a New Zealander, which means it's millions bigger than the third biggest! (Hayley Westenra's is the second biggest.) It's said that they expect him to become an even bigger star than Westenra. What's not well-known is that he features as "Riff" on the West Side Story CD that features Westenra and Vittorio Grigolo. Cont...
yeah, but this is the one that NewZealanders feel is their national anthem. If you asked a New Zealander what their national anthem is, they would say this, and not GSTQ. Its been around for almost 150yrs. GSTQ is very rarely played, only when the queen is actually present.
Yes, there are some classic cases of people who's voices has been destroyed from either the development of nodules or the surgical removal of them. Julie Andrews is probably the best known case. I am not necessarily an opera purist. I just like true opera as well as the new "popera". On Will's myspace it says that he is into "classical" and "pop." That doesn't sound much different than the other classical crossover stars out there today. I am looking forward to Will's debut CD.
Whether or not a singer develops nodules or a polyps doesn't necessarily mean they have wrecked their voice. Look at Pavarotti (rest his soul) he developed nodules and after taking a vocal break he became one of the world's best tenors! Or Natalie Dessay, who's had to get rid of vocal nodules she's developed over the years even with her flawless technique. Will will get farther in his success simply because he looks like the "hottie" from a boy band but he's a classical singer.
I agree absolutely that he has been signed up to be involved in the "crossover" or "popera" genre - his singing in the commemorative version of West Side Story with other of Decca's big name crossover singers makes that pretty plain. I wasn't thinking of you as a purist, but some will not like him being called classical.
Oh, there are also the other classics Music of the Night En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor Canto Della Terra Just to name a few. Ah, so the West Side Story album is his first album, kind of? I think he is only in like 3 of the tracks though. I want a CD of HIS, and his alone.
People get angry when people consider Andrea Bocelli classical, I wonder what people will say to Will? *eye roll* Apparently he signed a record contract, do you know when his debut album will be released? I am interested but he doesn't really have much out there except for one track on the "World in Union" CD.
Thanks for the info. You seem to know more than most Kiwis do about him. He hasn't had the promotion that Hayley Westenra had, which is a pity. Some duets with him and Hayley may not be a bad idea... with the right songs.
Cont.. On the West Side Story CD, Will's contributions IMO are amongst the best. He's about the only one of them who gets within a bull's roar of sounding like someone from a street gang. Westenra and Grigolo sing well, in a way, but too prettily... I understand that Will has roughed it a bit singing on boats and in clubs but has also had quite a bit of voice coaching so he's not likely to wreck his voice before he's twenty.
Right, he looks early twenties. I heard something about him being younger and a huge contract, But these things get exaggerated sometimes. I see that he has a web site up but there isn't much info on it yet.
@Cadenadelreino most people know it . Its onlt the really old people who probalby arent familiar with it They usually teach it from primary school onwards.
We forgot Nessun Dorma. Let's hope he doesn't do that either. It's just my guess that the WSS album may count as his. The whole thing has been very quiet. I would have expected him to have gone on tour supporting someone by now. Maybe something will happen in the new year...
Check the new "female Hayley", Elisabeth Marvelly. dubdubdub elizabeth (no space) marvelly dot c o m. This the third Kiwi to sign with EMI and her album will be out in December. She looks and sounds like Hayley. She hasn't a terribly strong voice, but I don't think that matters two much in this genre.
It worries me if you think our rugby team sucks, coz last I checked we were ranked number 1 in the world? If we suck then I'd hate to see what our opponents are like! haha
