Personally, I think it’s a great razor, great concept, like you mentioned. This is what I feel the OneBlade should have been. They dropped the ball and High Proof ran with the opportunity. Pricing is about right I’d say for the quality of machine work, and I’d be glad to back them!
I backed this razor as soon as I first saw it. As a head shaver, having a pivot for me is the best thing a razor can do, it makes head shaves easy and thoughtless…along the same lines as why the Leaf razor has such a strong following amount head shavers. The simplicity, the design, the pivot, and the fact that it uses DE blades and not some expensive limited-choice or proprietary blade is a massive win. Can’t wait to use mine. Great review Matt, appreciate the honesty, have a good day 🙏👏
Paul, I too shave my head & appreciate the pivoting head and the option to choose my blade. Please let me know your thoughts on this razor once you have had the opportunity to use it!
As a person that still uses carts (on occasion) and also doesn't hate cartridges due to the fact that I don't suffer irritation from them, I think it's a great idea. Simply it's a cartridge style razor with the ability to use a preferred blade which we all know makes a huge difference. The ability to use a preferred blade is the deal breaker IMO. Imagine being forced to use a disliked blade in a DE razor as opposed to a preferred one and we'd soon see similar complaints like the ones we see about cartridges. Some people just can't get to grips with forming a fixed angle with a DE razor so this combines the increased security against cuts and nics but with being able to use a blade that is far superior to those used in cartridges. My only issue is the price, which I feel would discourage people from moving away from cartridges. If they were able to reduce the cost of the razor itself this might help. That being said there's no doubt the company has a good idea as well as providing a good quality razor. I certainly wish them well for the future.
It looks like a better Oneblade in that it does not take a unique pricey blade. The down side is that I wish it was stainless. I ordered one one the first day so the pricing was not too bad, but I think the MSRP for an aluminum razor is kind of high. I can’t wait to give it a spin. Have a great weekend.
This razor intrigued me when I learned of it just before the Kickstarter opened, so I backed it on day one. I've got a couple hundred vintage DE and SE razors in my collection and I'm really looking forward to trying this one. I'm also secretly hoping that it's the gateway for my wife into all metal shaving.
Hey Matt! This razor is a very similar concept to the OneBlade. It has two distinct advantages...you can use any double edge blade not proprietary ones, and it is far easier to load than OneBlade. I hope the company does well with their kick starter program.
From using them all I agree I prefer fixed straight DE or straight razors on my face but I also shave my head with a leaf razor and I think this concept is amazing its bridges the gap from cartridges and DE real well
Thnx for the review Matt . As both a devoted DE and Twig shaver ,may have to try this High Proof Razor out . The Pivot, use of old school DE blade broken in half ,and made in USA are all very appealing aspects to me
Thanks for the review. I hadn't heard of the company until I asked a Facebook group for suggestions for my next head shaving tool. This was suggested and it's a great concept. The flexible head is an attractive feature for Head shavers.
I had my first few shaves with this razor and I love it. This razor is a daily shaver without a doubt, it's soo good on the skin...WOW. I got a perfect BBS shave each shave with no irritation. I am a daily head and face shaver so this razor is perfect for me. It reminds me of my favorite razor, the Henson AL13/Ti22. I can zoom around my head without worrying about cuts, it's very unique. Gorgeous razor and great shaver. High proof is a must have for me. I did not expect it to be as good as it is. This razor is 100% perfect head shaver. If you shave your head just get one now.
Hi, what about the longevity? Is it built to last or do i have to consider that it falls apart after using it daily for a year or two? I must shave head and face everyday too so this razor is on my wishlist now.
Matt, much respect🫡. You do a great job. Don’t ever lose your Passion.. what you have accomplished is phenomenal imo. I hope you never take any of it for granted.. and when you get tired, recharge, never get burnt out. We appreciate what you have done💪🏼
Also on the HighPoint.. I hope you don’t send it back. That team should do well, and it’s made in the USA (bought a Timeless for that reason, and I hope to get a Konsul from you guys at some point, and definitely want your first butterfly💪🏼). I think made in USA razor attempts are automatic for me.. just deserves respect, more so in todays atmosphere of alternate paths. That’s automatic for me to support as I too love this hobby.
As a head shaver I think having a flexible head option might be interesting to try out especially when I might be in a rush and not too concerned about having a very close/efficient shave.
This reminds also reminds me of the OneBlade. I like this idea and I like to use the pivoting heads for head shaves. Great to see you looking on the crowdfunding sites for new wet shaving gear!! I got my Rockwell 6 from their original kickstarter. And I agree, anything that can be a gateway from cartridge to traditional wet shaving is good. I’ll check this company out.
@RazorEmporium, as usual, Matt, another great detailed educational breakdown of wet shaving products with honesty and integrity. My passion for traditional wet shaving is growing and maturing. I'm eager to try various types of razor/blades combinations.
I just recently switched to DE razors 2 weeks ago. This caught my eye during the Kickstarter. The main thing that made me hesitant you also mention in this video, ability to easily predict where the edge is. With cartridge razors I struggled with detailing and now i switched to DE it is so effortless. Having full cutting power on one edge that i can see is so nice. This design was super tempting for simplicity though. If leaf adds a swiveling head to the twig i might consider that but for now enjoying DE razors for a while but looks like a lot of innovation happening to simplify it with SE. Will keep an eye on the market.
It's an amazing product. I really don't have much concerns besides longevity and price. Longevity as in 5-10+ years. It's perfect for anyone just switching from a cartridge, or for those who want an easy cartridge shave without the long term costs. Not to mention head shavers. I'm very happy to see this product, i wish them well.
This does look like a cool razor. My primary razors are more traditional DEs, but I've been using a Leaf for the past couple of years when I'm feeling lazy. When I use the Leaf, I only use one or two blades in it, because 3 just seems like overkill and I experienced a bit of burning when I tried 3 blades. I also got a Twig a few months ago, which helps get into tight spots like under my nose that my DEs or Leaf can't really get into well. Things I like about this design are that the head looks a lot narrower than the Leaf, so getting into tight spots would be easier. Plus, unlike the Twig this one swivels.
Another great and honest review Matt!!! Thank you for your honesty and sincerity!!! Love the concept and execution of this razor, definitely a worthy gateway razor for the cartridge user. I believe the MSRP too high for an aluminum razor! If they reduce the cost of the razor they will make their money on volume sales !!! Unfortunately did not get the special Kickstarter pricings but was able to get them at the $99 ea price before they hike it to $135 MSRP Regardless I wish them the best and success on all their endeavors!!! Good luck Andy and David!!!
Mmm, very interesting concept. Not that I can afford right now such a piece, and frankly having to snap blades is not something I love, but the concept and the manufacture are both great. And it looks like it's quality made and VERY well designed, but then again I love magnets, so… Seriously, very interesting video!
I think this is an interesting idea. If they can get the price down some, it will help it. If offering a firm plastic handle and a metal head, that might be the sweet spot. Definitely will kep an eye on this one!
Hey Matt, This was a good video to see a cool, new product. I rarely used a cartridge so I'm not looking for a flexible head, but glad to see this is available.
Seems like a cross between the leaf which I find to bulky and the twig with swivel head. I like it, I hope they sell a bunch and I may consider getting one once they just stock them.
I bought one because I want to transition to using DE blades; I like the cost and variety. I would have purchased the OneBlade, but the proprietary blades, albeit the fabled Feather, was not what I wanted. I suspect that this will be an interim step to a Twig/Thorn. I like the idea of a single edge; no confusion and don’t have to worry about balancing the two-sides. Use a half of a DE twice, then into the safety receptacle. Also, my dad used a Shick single edge injector…I want to pay homage to his shaving experience! Thank you! As always very informative.
Matt, Good Day to You. I too backed this razor company as soon as I saw it on Kensurfs' channel, about 3 weeks ago. Why not? It's American made, uses double edge blades, pricing seems right, and cool use of magnets. Thank you very much for the review.
I like it a lot the flexible head is great for new wet shavers switching over and it’s a great idea happy to see it’s made in USA. I would like to see a cheaper version possibly a 3D printed plastic model? It could be more easily mass produced and possibly sell a lot more from being more cost effective. Also my personal preference I would like to see a DE version of this rather than a 1/2 single edge. At least It looks better than the leaf. Thanks again Vic
Morning Matt. Great shave and evaluation of the High Proof SE razor. Everyone that I have viewed that was evaluating this razor had nothing but praise. IMO this razor being USA made is a plus, next using non-proprietary blades a plus, the use of new technology in holding the blade in place with magnets a plus. I know that these guys are not the first to use magnets, but their use makes for ease of loading is great. Personally I don't care for the pivoting head. Maybe some of the cartridge users will see this as a way to switch to a cheaper way to shave. I wish them well in their endeavor. The price point that they choose will be very important in this competitive market. Thanks again Matt.
Great concept. Might get one for a family member to see if they switch to DE. Took a look at the prospector on your website. Beautiful razor. I'm into the straights though. I do use the leaf on the back of my head for safety and time reduction. REX Konsul for the neck and upper lip 💋. 3 different razors but my face is worth it.
I wish it used an injector blade. Other than that it looks great. Maybe a stainless offering would be nice too. The OneBlade I suppose would be a competitor along with leaf.
twig and high proof are on my dream list and must buy products in future. im sick of multiple blade razors and will convert to SE razors as they seem to be easy conversion and also thay will eliminate that frustrating razors burns that cartridge razors do
I love the look of that razor. Hopefully they are successful. And if they have the resources are able to design a cheaper version to get even more people away from cartridge razors.
Nice review. I think this will be popular with head shavers and beginners to wet shaving. For those comparing this to the Twig or Thorn go watch Subie Shaves as he has compared the two.
I too like the look. But how would you describe how it follows the contour of your face. In the video you did a one pass, is that enough to get a bbs have or would you need more passes. And my final thought, would you think that you could shave every other day or would it be a daily shaver due to the lack of giving a smooth shave. I know everyone has different beards, hair type but overall in your option, could you skip a day.
I think Highproof is going to be extremely successful. It is perfect for transitioning folks from cartridges, back to far less expense with Razor blades. Between Leaf/Twig/Thorn & Highproof.. and hopefully some others. The DE craze will hopefully force Gillette into a SS or Titanium DE comeback. Everybody shaves something. Huge market. Highproof will do well IMO👍🏼
@@dappershaves isn’t the One blade still a proprietary blade? If not, then I agree.. but that whole “proprietary” blade thing is what I don’t like. I appreciate the Highproof, and Leaf (and the like) that allow any DE (or snapped DE to SE) blade.
My only qualm with it is that relying on magnets scares me. At some point, those magnets will need to be replaced, which gives the product a lifespan when compared to something like a three piece.
interesting shave Matt, seem like another solution to a problem that should not exist. DE’s and straights are the tools to use. classic designs that are still superior. Your lathering improved a lot, great shave. regards dapper shaves
It's a fine razor. I have no criticism of the device itself. In my opinion, it's too expensive and there are already other variations on the theme which are less expensive.
The design of that razor really is attractive and it seems to be superbly well made. But, having said that, I can't help but feel that the entry price is just too high to be able to tempt many new shavers to cross over from cartridges.
@@RazorEmporium I completely understand that, Matt. I also applaud those who can afford to and do buy items produced in their own nation. But, for the average Joe, who uses supermarket bought razors, I can't see this being overly tempting. It will be more likely to be bought by those hobbyists already knee-deep in the hobby.
That seems like a good razor for the person that wants to get away from cartridges for whatever reason and does not want to dive into the rabbit whole and actually save money by having one razor and using de blades. Or a good travel razor. Stick that sucker to your hotel mirror.
Most important thing for me it's that it'll take (half) DE blades! I would like a combination of the design of this razor, the fixed head and angle of the leaf twig and the simplicity of construction by the Mars razor from England. Just two plates holding the blade fixed by a screw. Maybe a new idea for Matt 🤓
@@hardinmichael1981 If you're thinking of the Razorock Hawk, it uses Artist Club SE blades and not DE blades. Plus I don't like the angle of the head. But thanks for the tip 👍🏼
I understand R & D and made in America costs, but this razor is not the last piece in the shaving puzzle, and I don’t see $95 of value here let alone $135.
I’m sitting here like a kid waiting for Christmas for the prospector razor to hit my mailbox. This high proof razor looks nice, but not for me. I’m a bigger fan of the older stuff or at least razors that look like older stuff
I have a Leaf, which gives me a choice of using one, two, or three blades, has a pivoting head, can use any double edge blades of your choice, has embeded magnets, and a better price point. So why would I want to buy this High Proof razor?
@@davec1768 I will definitely write that down. I do however have two Thiers Issard razors, two (possibly three) Gold Dollar razors, two antique razors (one belonging to my grandfather). The one that is currently in the rotation is one from, I’m guessing, 60-70 years old from the the Alberts grocery store (now ACME). My Dove is up next in the rotation.
Well I had Gillette Adjustable back when they sold for less then pocket change. The I would buy a real Double Blade made of good metal. This looks like gimmick.
The high proof razor is probably not going to be for me. I did support the Kickstarter. I think we need as many safety razors as possible to help convert the masses.
There is nothing new here. Focus and Leaf did this years ago (pivoting head, razor blade snapped in two, single edge). Also, there are people here comparing it to the Oneblade but they are different razors. The Oneblade uses single edge blades not safety razor blades, and the Oneblade is far easier to load than the kickstarter razor or the ones that I’ve mentioned. Snapping a safer razor in two then taking the head apart to fit the half blade is not “far easier” than simply sliding in a SE blade in the Oneblade.
'As a head shaver' does not make you exceptional. it's not necessary to have a pivot at all. The same as it's not required in order to shave your face. You need practice and patience is all. Technique trumps tools. Magnets have several drawbacks, and if you live in the armpit of Texas you have 2 of them. Heat and humidity. I'd not trust a DE blade held with a magnet over one i could screw down. T
Nice review Matt👍, shave too🪒🪒 Where do we start with this razor, what makes it different from the Twig, Thorn and Leaf, Focus or One Blade concept? I guess "different strokes for different folks" is a good thing and it will eventually come down to cost. Seems to work just fine but magnetic incorporation steers me clear. Thanks for the video, interesting razor. Enjoy!
