!! Sorry for the bad quality :( !!
Join me in today's Episode, where I document a small roadtrip I did with my no longer neglected e34. After countless hours and 1000s of euros, I attempt to drive 1000km to the french coast, hopefully without any incidents.
Thanks for the support!

!! Please excuse the poor audio and video quality :( !! Unfortunately the roads and wind noise kinda worked against me while filming this video. I would also like to thank my subscribers. The support and interaction they have given me during this project has been unreal! THANKS !

Ah, a road trip in an E34, that takes me back to great times. I have the 535i SE Auto, it was a superb cruiser. On a long run it would average 30mpg which is not bad considering. Back then I made decent money and fuel was relatively cheap, so the cost of motoring never really bothered me. We, (me, my wife and son) would think nothing of travelling to London and back on a Sunday, just to have a meal at a favourite restaurant. It is a 400mile round trip from where we live. This would be 1997 'ish. You'd be lucky to be able to do that trip in a day now with all the problems on the roads, speed cameras, road works etc. those were the days!

@bobfrankish8883 @bobfrankish8883 Glad to hear you also have great memories driving around with your e34. I can't Imagine to drive through London nowadays. Traffic is horrible. My parents went to London with my golf2. I even a picture of them in front of the tower bridge. I think that was around 1993 or so. Also, I'm convinced back then(1970-2010) was the best time to be alive except for the few market crashes and regional conflicts.

Only thing I do not like about french roads are the toll booths. Happy to see the Car made it.
@DailyDrivenClasssics
@DailyDrivenClasssics 3 месяца назад
@TheSaemiProduction @TheSaemiProduction The french highways are not bad, but the belgian ones are often really bad. Normal backroads are garbage in both countries:( Also I always make sure to take roads without tolls. I pay taxes on fuel, road tax etc, so I refuse to pay another glorified road tax :) Thanks for your support !

Nice trip bro, Belgium have a bad bumpy roads, I was driving a truck back in 2015 and now I see that they do nothing about it, flywheel is not a big issue, I think you maybe need to check turbo and bosch pump cause consumption is a big for that engine, I think 7l is enough for highway :)
@DailyDrivenClasssics
@DailyDrivenClasssics 3 месяца назад
Thansk man! It's funny. because everyone that has driven through belgium knows exactly what I was talking about :) Yes, the flywheel ain't really an issue, but the noise is annoying :( Thanks for the support !

This was a proper nice little roadtrip video. Definetely someting not right, doing this kind of driving you should get below 7 liter consumption. But Im glad you started getting the vibe of the car, these things are grate for cuising, thats what they were designed to do. I would go for the tds upgrade, would make it much more fun to drive. If you keep it, I would go for some 15 inch style 5 wheels. Brings out the caracter of the shape more.
@DailyDrivenClasssics
@DailyDrivenClasssics 3 месяца назад
@markmarot9026 Thanks! I agree with the consumption Im gonna redo the timing. Quantity is spot on at 5 mg/stroke .I was thinking style 17 or style 15 wheels. These also fit the character imo
@markmarot9026
@markmarot9026 3 месяца назад
@@DailyDrivenClasssics Those wheels are good too! My all time favorite is the bbs 17 inch ones, but they cost far tooo much. Do you have cruise controll? It is really easy to fit if you dont.
@DailyDrivenClasssics
@DailyDrivenClasssics 3 месяца назад
@markmarot9026 yes bbs are always expensive :( No, this car is very poorly equipped. No board computer no rear electric windows no cruise control. But a sunroof (which i hate). Also i dont like cruise control. Gives me a weird feeling when i drive with it so i never use it 🤷‍♂️

Great videos! Thanks for sharing your experience with your E34. So, why not trust the M51 and the work you put into rebuilding it? - I watched all your videos - You did it correctly according to manual repair procedures. The M51 is a very reliable engine. I've rebuilt my E39 M51 engine two years ago, but I've gone further by replacing also the clutch, crankshaft bearings, conrod bearings, all respective bolts, and also the piston rings. Now, 15000 KM later I've only changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, and cabin filters. Anyway, in the last couple of weeks, my car has developed a similar rattling noise. I am thinking about the same as you: The flywheel. My engine has more than 400.000 Km, I also replaced the chains with a set from another engine with about 300.000 Km - I know, this was not a very wise decision. - I am replacing the chains, sprockets and tensioners very soon. I'll also check the rattle noise. I am very curious to know what the rattle noise on yours is. Good luck! Cheers from Portugal!

@JL_Albuquerque @JL_Albuquerque Thanks a lot for the support ! I trust the work that I did, it is just that feeling of uncertainty and doubt that was constantly on my mind. Well, with new rod ,main bearings and cylinder rings, that's pretty much a full engine rebuild and good for many more km. Congrats on that :) But the rattle your observing could be the chains 300 k is a lot for a simplex chain on a diesel 6 cyl. Maybe just check the stretch with the timing tools ? If the stretch is okey its probably the dual mass flywheel :( Greetings back to you :)

I quote: "masterpiece". That says it all. And the reply to a comment below adds to it: "but if it's diesel it's gonna be a tds again." You just have to pay what we call "Lehrgeld" across the border. I don't have the time nor the energy of yours, so I had my M51 overhauled by pros (as you know); they have paid their Lehrgeld a long time ago ...

Most likely the pump injection timing is out of spec beacause high consumption. Sounds also a bit rough for a tds.
@DailyDrivenClasssics
@DailyDrivenClasssics 3 месяца назад
@Kuikuuu I share that opinion. I must have moved the pump when I tightened the locking nuts after setting the timing. The engine itsself runs really smooth. I think its the flywheel that's transmitting vibrations and thereby makes it sound rough

Have you ever considered getting an e39 525d? They are just like an e34 but much more comfortable and refined. The m57 commonrail diesel engine ie far more reliable and easier to work on than the tds engine.
@DailyDrivenClasssics
@DailyDrivenClasssics 3 месяца назад
@gerhardorosz7984 @gerhardorosz7984 e39 is definetely happening but if its a diesel, it's gonna be a tds again or m57d30. But right now I'm craving petrol. I drove a really clean e46 6 cyl last week and since then I wanna own one again :)

Nice that a old diesel making a long roadtrip. My golf 2 GTD has a bad electric wire that feeds the mechanical fuel pump with 12v. Every time you give it some beans that wire snaps. I need a complete new wire from the fuse box to the pump. Because the old one becomes shorter and shorter. It breaks of due the age. Left me couple times stranded. That the car all of a sudden shuts off because that wire comes loose. Even a good connection helps not

@rachids3030 @rachids3030 Old diesels have an unique character, that's why I wanted to do a longer trip. Despite most people disliking them. Also sad to hear the story of your mk2 gtd. I always wanted one of these. I bet it's gonna run mint after your done with the repair :)

Hello, first of all thank you for these nice high quality videos. I am helping my friend who just got a 318tds e36 and your series has helped me a lot. I ram into your same issue of trying to read the ecu. I used a bmw diagnostic to obd2 to usb cable and it can read all the modules in the car (it’s a 97 model) but not the ecu. I also want to buy the tiny ADS interface but on the open labs website it says it’s out of stock and also my browser says the website isn’t secure. We’re did you order yours?

Thanks for the support ! :) Weird that you cant access the ecu despite it being a 97. Maybe 97 was the erstzulassung and car was produced earlier. Regarding the tinyads, I still have 5 of them. You can send me a message on my instagram. its linked on my youtube page

@@DailyDrivenClasssics today that's true, german cars are like others brands, but everything before the GOLF IV so before the 2000s was very good reliability by what i know. But maybe you have different experiences. The famous 1.9TDI, OM606, M50, S50, W124... Real panzers.

@firedustman @firedustman I mostly agree, but m52tu/m54 m57 were all made till later and are really reliable too.On the otherhand there are many crap engines like n47/n57 etc. Someone in my family drives a 2023 320d . Has electrical issues already lol.
