This makes me so happy for you. The idea you are going to be creating pasture with old growth trees is amazing. The trees will provide valuable shade and the pigs will help clear out brush and underlying growth that will help you raise more pork in future years.

Allison came up with some good solid names for the piggies. Really was funny how once you opened the gate, hesitation due to fence training worked well. I'm sure they will enjoy the wide open spaces, ( run free little piggies). Thanks Morgan for the update!🐷🐷🐷🐷❤️👍

@edmartin875

That is because pigs will eat everything they can. Then you only have to clear out what they couldn't eat, like trees, rocks, logs, stumps, old tires, the abandoned fridge, stuff like that. Did I mention I used to raise pigs. If you have anything organic you want to get rid of and it is of eatable size, pigs can take care of it for you. Criminals have been known to use pigs to get rid of bodies for them. Also known to take care of bodies after a battle. So it is not advisable to nap in a pig pen.

@TMK-22 - Pigs are very efficient in eliminating most invasive vegetation. They can even "take care of" kudzu because pigs dig up and eat the kudzu roots.

Famous last words. In the words of Jussiac Park - Nature finds a way. Same thoughts were being said about the invasive carps and snakehead species. You do not know if the pigs would live through the winter. Just because you have experienced it doesnt mean it cant happen. As the animal steward, you are responsbile for their care and that of the natuaral enivorment when you big in an animal thats not native to that region. Just be pro active and put in another fence further away to keep them somecwhat contained. You really need to speak to more experienced farmers. Not the pretend ones on You Tube. The ones whos families have raised animals for generations. Orginally pigs were not even a native species to the Americas.. They were brought over on ships and escaped. I really fired up about this because i have to trap and actively hunt these creatures down to save my farm and pastures from being destoryed. Take precaution.

In a fenced in area they will eat all the vegetation they can in the time they are there. Actually, since they are omnivores, they will eat EVERYTHING they can. Want to get rid of some kind of carcass. They can do that too. Live in an area with poisonous snakes ? Put pig fences around your property and add pigs and soon you will have no more snakes.

The pigs would not cross over where the wire use to be. They are both smart and stupid. They believe in that moment that the wire and its power is still there. I always use a heavy wooden or metal gate to connect them to their new pasture area. Over their time in their current area, they rub the gate and get to know its safe to touch and go near. Once u open the gate, they will cross without much hesitation. When u pull the wire they simply dont trust thst its gone so them crossing can be a pain.

Fun to watch the young pigs! I think Ben of The Hollar Homestead has an easy time moving his pigs because he breeds pigs. This means the sows teach their piglets about the wires and lead the way for the piglets into new fenced pastures. Piglets also learn, from their mothers, that 5-gallon feeding buckets are to be followed.

Amazing to see the pigs roam in a new area. Possibly move their shelter in a week or so, as the area around their home & food trough gets trampled down the most. A month for that size area is perfect. I can't wait to see what it looks like in 2 or 3 weeks. Please make sure we see the new chicks in every video; they grow so fast at this age!

To get them out of the pen faster, you may want to clear the first 10 to 15 ft of ground away from the gate because they are hitting up that fresh grass for food. Just a thought if you continue this practice throughout the years to come.

You should be scattering last year's pig area every year with a mix of different plants just too see what grows fast and that they like. Maybe an early season bean. Then it would get a crop for an animal, another turnover, and would make it ready for planting something straight after a two week run like you sorta do for cows

that breed of pig DOES do well in winter, they originate from the UK, and guess what we have winter here and these guys are a northern breed and the north of the uk FREEZES quite regularly.! they hunt out underground food like roots and things like wild truffles and they don't mind eating other living things either. once the pigs work out that freedom is just one small shock away, they will make the brake, just get more gates you can fit together or fence off the area better. you take so many short cuts that's going to kick you in the crown jewels one day that I fear then only after cows have escaped and been hit by a car, or pigs get loose and go wild, or a bear just goes oh wow only 2 foot fence I'll just grab that hoglet. it's one thing to maintain an eco system Morgan, it's another to take short cuts that are not short cuts they are corner cutting accidents just waiting to happen, and it's sad.
